Intros quiz #2

I got Audacity working so here's my attempt at an intros quiz.. not as obscure as I threatened, I tried to make it as pop/indie biased as my collection allows, and each piece will be known to at least one of the 'Spill. Clues will be given.. I'm looking forward to seeing what suggestions people make for some of the tracks...
They are all intros, and there should be 13 tracks of varying lengths.

63 comments:

  1. Thanks for not making it too obscure nilpferd! This allowed me to successfully identify one of them.

    Number 5 is Man O' Sand To Girl O' Sea by The Go-Betweens.

    There may be a Pet Shop Boys track towards the end ... but that's it from one very humbled ToffeeBoy.

    We may have to wait for the experts to return from the Book Launch for the answers to start flooding in...

    ReplyDelete
  2. Man O' Sand it was!
    You're on the right lines with Pet Shop Boys, but it's not a track by the group itself.
    No need to feel humbled though- no reason why you should own the same albums I do! I did try to stretch it so that most will only know one or two.
    Liked the Alfred E Neumann picture by the way, MAD played a major part in my cultural education... in fact the MAD "Jaws" and "Godfather" strips are my only experience to date of those two films...

  3. I think I have intros quiz phobia--that feeling that I should or maybe Do know something, but my brain's just not cooperating. Anxiety dream material. I'm ready for clues. I got Arctic Monkeys and Bowwowwow on BMcF's, but I'm drawing quite a blank here.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I have to admit, I nearly included a track from the Roots which you'd have picked.
    It's tricky though with rap, either the tracks start in with lyrics or use a sample you might confuse with the original.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I know what you mean about eep opp, Nilpferd, I was contemplating doing an intros quiz, and faced a similar dilemma. Here's the alfred e. newman worry picture that I like t he best.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think it was Groucho Marx (in Duck Soup) who said:
    "This man may look like an idiot, and talk like an idiot, but don't let that fool you.
    He really IS an idiot."

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm 100% stumped, i feel like i should know the heavy guitar song and the 80s sounding number that follows it, but I'm drawing a blank here. ... .

    ReplyDelete
  8. To be fair, the heavy one is a bit obscure, but the following track is a pretty well known single from an important 80's indie band.. pretty sure you'd be familiar with band number 4 too, if not the track..

    Another hint:
    Numbers 12 and 13 contain former members of the same band...

    ReplyDelete
  9. HAHA, Blimpy! Now you know how it feels.
    Nilpferd, I want to be you in a parallel universe...You know so much, but you're not obnoxious about it, you're funny, and you're an architect in Germany...which to me, means...well, here's my story, I had had some interest in my films from people with German connections, and I got very excited, but each time it was said that they weren't technically precise enough for the German market. So I would think that an architect would have to have superhuman technical perfection. Oh yeah, and you have no phobias, that's what started this whole rant.

    ReplyDelete
  10. no. 4 was ringing bells, in terms of the style. . . gosh this is annoying!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm honoured, Steenbeck, but need to come clean here- to be honest the blog format filters out my natural obnoxiousness as I have to read everything through before posting it, so I end up binning 80%... and as for being technically precise, you should see how I stuff Nilpferd jr's jeans into her wardrobe... and actually my work here involves rather less creating-technical-perfection and rather more bossing-people-around-just-to-create-half-arsed-imperfection.
    But if you do find that parallel universe, let me know so I can enter it first..

    ReplyDelete
  12. Track No. 4 is from an EP, the band is currently rumoured to be on the verge of reforming... not for the first time..

    The original band, some of whose members went on to record tracks 12 and 13 has also recently been the subject of getting-back-together rumours..

    ReplyDelete
  13. F*ck me but I don't know any of them.

    ReplyDelete
  14. ~~~~~~
    ( )

    ^that's supposed to be a toupee
    (seem to remember you wear sideburns)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Excuse my ASCII art..
    shame about the sideburns...
    try this..
    ~~~~~~
    (....)
    CB, according to your profile at least one of the bands here is among your favourites..
    ReplyDelete
  16. Did everyone else just look at CaroleBristol's profile? I'm not any closer to figuring anything out, though.
    ReplyDelete
  17. still, all the more incentive for you to do your own infuriating lists... ;-)
    I have to sleep.. and try to figure out how to do some sideburns properly in ASCII.. now, there's technical perfection for you...
    night all..
    ReplyDelete
  18. Well I recognised the 2 Davis' (you almost tricked me with the remix there), and the latin sounding one I feel I should know.
    ReplyDelete
  19. Ejaydee!Mnemonic! How was the social? Where's all the drunken posting?
    ReplyDelete
  20. EJ- Right with the mister and former mrs Davis'...Nos. 2 and 6-
    re the latin sounding No. 11, think of a New York based label famous for a Salsa based sound...
    ..failing the drunken posting, am looking forward to some hung-over posting sometime this afternoon...
    ReplyDelete
  21. (Sob!) I'm with Carole.... Sounding good though.
    ReplyDelete
  22. Tarxien has a couple of photos of the end-of-year class line-up with the head boy in the middle, taken right at the end of the evening. We all have copies of the book signed by everyone who was still there and on their feet at that point.
    Will probably not be able to post anything else until this evening as I have to go and dig the allotment. Is gardening good for hangovers, I wonder?
    ReplyDelete
  23. I left early, but got back to where I live in the early hours
    my son jumped on my head to welcome me home at 6am...joys.
    ReplyDelete
  24. FP, I'll bet you know Nr. 12- you even communicated recently with the singer...
    ReplyDelete
  25. Mmmmmm, last night I was a bit fuddled.
    I think I get Throwing Muses or The Breeders now and My Bloody Valentine.
    I'll have to go and listen to a load of CDs though.
    I am terrible at remembering intros.
    ReplyDelete
  26. CB- Right! MBV is there...
    no Muses or Breeders though.. if you meant Nr. 3 I have to admit I've probably been a bit mean there.. it is a Pixies inspired band, but not a very well known one, from my hometown...
    ReplyDelete
  27. As usual I don't know any of 'em but I did love the Alfred Newman/George Bush piece supplied by Ms. Steen, though I found the format to be very frustrating, almost impossible to read scrolling down through one word per line, so I copied and pasted it into TextEdit and it came out perfectly. I'm including it in today's emails, thanks.
    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, I thought #3 was either Muses or Breeders.
    ReplyDelete
  29. BTW, the latest Breeders gets rave reviews in my local city mag- anyone heard it?
    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi - just to say a belated hello to everyone I met yesterday, and hope those of you who were travelling further than WC1 got home safe!
    Hopefully will get round to joining up properly here, but fear that starting a new job shortly will keep me off RR even more :(
    Oh well, there's always lazy Sunday afternoons instead...
    Carefree
    ReplyDelete
  31. I think the Carole-favourite artist is Dusty Springfield, presumably from the Pet Shop Boys-produced 'Reputation' album.
    I've got a copy of that Latin tune somewhere but I can't think what it is. I'm guessing it's on Fania or maybe Tico. The initial piano bit sounds like the intro to I Got I Line On You by Spirit.
    ReplyDelete
  32. Dead right about Fania- try compilations assembled by famous DJ's...
    I don't know Spirit, but if it sounds similar I might have to check them out..
    Carole picked her favourite artist already- MBV. No Dusty Springfield- although there is a Pet Shop Boys connection on this mix. Without there being a PSB track.
    ReplyDelete
  33. … and the My Bloody Valentine track is Don’t Ask Why from the ‘Glider’ EP, isn’t it?
    Does this clue… "Numbers 12 and 13 contain former members of the same band..." … mean former members of MBV?
    ReplyDelete
  34. Exactly, Don't ask why. I wanted an MBV track and that was the only one I had which wasn't so obvious..
    the former band whose members later contributed to 12 and 13 isn't MBV, though... in fact MBV's first release more or less coincided with the breakup of the band I have in mind..
    ReplyDelete
  35. Ah, the esteemed Mr Gilles Peterson; in which case, it's Freak Off by Orchestra Harlow. Marvellous.
    Bit stumped about the Pet Shop Boys connection though.
    Oh hang on, it's Electronic, isn't it? Of course. Is it Disappointed?
    ReplyDelete
  36. THAT'S IT! That's been bugging me for hours now and it was the only one that sounded familiar. I'm hanging my head in shame...
    ReplyDelete
  37. So, that last one … not Morrissey, is it?
    ReplyDelete
  38. Yep!
    Excellent work Mr.DNA for #11
    "Freak off" and #12 "Disappointed"- the latter being the PSB connection. #13 is indeed from the Mozzer.
    That leaves 01, 03, 07-10, besides 02 and 06, which EJ knows but haven't been named yet.
    ReplyDelete
  39. ..and continuing the musicians-common-to-different-bands theme, the band responsible for the 80's sounding track was also (later) visited by one of the musicians off track 12...
    ..and adding to the husband/wife theme, one of the remaining tracks is performed by another husband/wife duo.. the man has been blind since birth and his former bass player performed on one of the Davis' tracks...
    (I'm looking at you here, EJD! Bonus points for naming the bass player and the instrument played by the blind man on this mix..)
    ReplyDelete
  40. Like ejaydee, I was thrown off the scent by track 06 being a remix – is it from ‘Panthalassa’ then?
    That's about as far as I'm going to get. 01 sounds a bit like Carl Craig, 02 is Betty Davis (dunno the track though), 03 sounds a bit like a Scottish Pixies, 07 sounds more like the end of something than the beginning, 08 sounds a bit like Stevie Wonder, 09 sounds very vaguely like Nirvana’s Negative Creep and 10 sounds a bit like they've borrowed a New Order drum pattern.
    ReplyDelete
  41. Nilpferd,
    I posted that before I read your comment. Is it Stevie Wonder & Syreeta then?
    Which one do you call the 80s-sounding one?!
    ReplyDelete
  42. nice work.. Stevie and Syreeta is correct..
    The Miles Davis remix isn't from Panthalassa, but was released last year..
    otherwise..
    01 Right direction, not Carl Craig- it's an early cut from one of the originators of Jungle..
    02 Betty Davis- available on Youtube..
    03 Ha, nice one- actually correct, if you consider Dunedin to be a scottish town... Band name actually contained in the expression "3 Dunedin Scottish"...
    07 Indeed a beginning- it is a collaboration sung by an "electro sexpot" as she's been labelled, I can't understand a word she sings on this song..
    08 Stevie and Syreeta, as you guessed.. what track and what instrument?
    09 is an antipodean band with a misspelt name..
    10 is the "80's" track- not sure if it's New Order inspired though.. a one-man band, if it helps...
    There's still 13 to be identified.. with the world's fate resting on your shoulders...
    ReplyDelete
  43. 01 – Hmm, narrows it down a bit. Sounds kinda spacey, so something in the back of mind's saying LTJ Bukem, but it sounds too early for him.
    03 – Arf! A little way off, geographically at least. Just get my crossword-solving head on … ah, it's the 3Ds then.
    07 – Electro Sexpot = Alison Goldfrapp
    10 – 80s one-man band? Wild stab in the dark: Momus
    ReplyDelete
  44. LTJ it is.. 3Ds also correct, and Ms Golfrapp makes it 3 in a row.
    10 isn't Momus though. I should have said, originally a one man band, with occasional guest artists, later taking on permanent band members.
    The band-name includes a couple of articles, btw...
    ReplyDelete
  45. Ah, I forgot your earlier clue about him being visited by one of Electronic – it must be The The
    ReplyDelete
  46. It's a mighty impressive effort by the double helical one..
    To recap:
    01 ? / LTJ Bukem
    02 If I'm in luck I might get picked up/ Betty Davis
    03 ?/the 3Ds
    04 Don't ask why / My Bloody Valentine
    05 Man O'Sand to Girl O'Sea / The Go-betweens
    06 Honky Tonk / Miles Davis, Carlos Santana remix
    07 ? sung by Alison Goldfrapp
    08 ? sung by Syreeta with Stevie Wonder
    09 ? by ?
    10 ? by The The
    11 Freak Off / Mark&Joyce Weinstein
    12 Disappointed / Electronic
    13 ? / Morrissey
  47. You're Gonna Need SOmeone on Your Side!!!! Did I get one? Did I?
    ReplyDelete
  48. Well, you don't need to look so pleased...;-)
    Lucky Nr. 13, Steenbeck! Congrats- I thought that one would go early- but perhaps the rockabilly threw everyone..
    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh, I can come up with an answer when other people have supplied 98% of the information. I'm in awe of Mr.DNA and Mr.EJD's collective quiz-solving prowess.
    ReplyDelete
  50. I've obviously been far too obscure in choosing the tracks, but it's hard to judge- like Blimpy I thought many more of them would be selected instantly so deliberately went for non-typical sounds. I think it's great how one person's question can jog someone else's memory, and it was also fun figuring out the clues and cross connections (I didn't have any of that planned out- just shows how narrow my collection really is, I guess)
    ReplyDelete
  51. Even though I didn't get any right, I;ve been loving the quiz as a whole. 50+ comments too is awesome.
    Who's gonna do the next one?!
    ReplyDelete
  52. ..just to finish up... the final list:
    01 Demon's Theme/LTJ Bukem
    02 If I'm in luck I might get picked up/ Betty Davis
    03 Outer Space/the 3Ds
    04 Don't ask why / My Bloody Valentine
    05 Man O'Sand to Girl O'Sea / The Go-betweens
    06 Honky Tonk / Miles Davis, Carlos Santana remix
    07 Contrazoom / Spacer
    08 I love every thing about you/Syreeta
    09 Bitter/Shihad
    10 Perfect/The The
    11 Freak Off / Mark&Joyce Weinstein
    12 Disappointed / Electronic
    13 You're gonna need someone on your side/Morrissey
    Thanks for everyone's comments, I had a lot of fun with it.
    Let me know if anyone wants to hear any of the tracks in full.
    ReplyDelete
  53. And Stevie Wonder was playing the …
    Bagpipes?
    ReplyDelete
  54. Not quite... it was one of these..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuaSzFf7yq0
    ReplyDelete
  55. Did we guess #9 or was it a forfeit? I got as far as "Can you misspell ACDC?
    ReplyDelete
  56. 9 was the only one no-one got near, Shihad were quite in the States and here for a while but obviously not as big as I thought.. still, I like their brand of melodic noise- their track Deb's night out always reminded me of MBV..
    And apologies to Darceysdad, but I would rather stick my finger in the socket than playlist AC/DC..;-)
    ReplyDelete
  57. Shihad were quite big in the States, I meant.. not just trying to increase the number of posts, you understand..;-)
    ReplyDelete
  58. [small voice] I recognised Electronic. After the big clue.
    ReplyDelete
  59. Cheers, FP- I was half expecting Neil Tennant himself to pop in and put us out of our misery after that hint! ;-)
