  5. EASY?!?! Wait, maybe it's because I haven't started drinking yet. Let me get a glass of wine and then try again. I haven't had a chance to listen to your spring selection yet, either.

  6. I seem to hear Portishead- numb through the fog... otherwise I'll have to sleep on it

    ReplyDelete
  7. Is that Bjork saying "alcohol"? I got some that were already gotten, but I'm pretty stumped.

On a totally separate note, listen to the line-up of the Roots' Picnic in Philly next month...the Roots, Gnarls Barkley, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Santo Gold, and a bunch of people I've never heard of. Ouch.

  14. Ahhh, nooooo. The Pressure!! I'll get it, I swear. The weekends tend to be bad for me to listen to stuff on the computer, so tomorrow morning....watch out!!

  15. Jesse Malin - Mona Lisa
..that's the 'Drinking like shane McGowan' part of "Part II", great song, nice guy (had the pleasure of having a couple of drinks with JM once....)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Did I hear someone doing One bourbon, one scotch and one beer? The original is, I think, John Lee Hooker but lots of people have covered it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jesse Malin- mona lisa correct and a great song.

and one scotch, one bourbon, one beer is right and a bit unfair cos it's not Hookers version this one is by Amos Milburn give it to you cos there's a lot of covers.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hmmm, blame the strawberry wheat beer Saneshane! I didn't realise there was a part 2, I though I caught Edwyn Collins (3) and Roddy Frame's (8?) Scottish burrrrrrrrrs, 2 sounds just like Thom Yorke oooh and Kenickie's Come Out 2 Nite: "gettin' drunk in the park"! Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Is that Screamin Jay Hawkins--Strange?? (#14) I'm going crazy with #13. So familiar, and I just can't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ooh recognised Tipsy by J-Kwon, and there's a song by Common right after that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No, it's not Strange, it's Alligator Wine.
Ejaydee, I listened to Souls of Mischief--I did like it-a lot. I'll look for more.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think that Common song was from Electric Circus, I'm getting warmer.

Steenbeck, there's a song that I don't think is available anywhere called Cab Fare, which is just wonderful. Unfortunately the sample couldn't be cleared. But thank God for youtube.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ejaydee, I heard Cab Fare when I was looking around on youTube. And a few others. I liked everything I heard. They remind me of a few different things, all of which I like. And I was interested to read about their Hip Hop collective Hieroglyphics. I find the idea of a creative collaboration like that so appealing.

As for this quiz, Saneshane... I'm so bad at these things. When you said "Steenbeck needs 13" Did you mean that it would be something I'd recognize, or were you suggesting that I need a beer, as the person in the clip keeps saying?

    ReplyDelete
  24. ahhh up-date time

tracy gets kenickie come out tonight
    ejaydee gets j-kwon tipsy
and common and the album title (and the track now aquarius..good work.
steenb you get alligator wine and you may indeed want the beer #13(but as a veggie you wouldn't want what she asks for with it)

  26. I don't think 13 (part 1) is Nina Simone, could it be Esther Phillips?

    ReplyDelete
  27. it is a pigfoot and it is Nina
    good teamwork there!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't know about everyone else, but I need clues!! #17 for instance...

I'm listening to 93 'til Infinity as I type. Thanks, Ejaydee.

    ReplyDelete
  29. A quick google gave me the answer, didn't know that song. But while searching for it, I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH5ZE3N8cxU
which is a bit I mentioned to you at the social saneshane, Nina doing Feelings, mocking it, then subliming it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. She's the best!! I'd never seen that, ejaydee, thanks. wow, it made me weepy.

It reminded me of the the version I have of My Father. I'll post it. And Go Limp, too, which is more funny than sublime, but has an edge. I just love hearing her talk and laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nina Simone 'give me a pigfoot & a bottle of beer' for those that don't know it

it's a great clip ejaydee..my other half says turn that up now!

ms steen #17 is the first manufactured boy band

back with more clues when I finish sorting stuff out

  32. The whole concert is worth a watch. The audience is typically Swiss, they hardly say a word or make any noise apart from polite clapping between songs. She basically spends the whole show trying to get some reaction form the crowd, growing more and more frustrated, which shows a bit here.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ejay: Thank you, that was spectacular.
Never seen nina sing or play like that before, an amazing piece of film, never seen any artist become so involved with a piece of music and her audience, never seen or heard nina play like she does in that middle piece. Great cameraman, great audio. And she absolutely has the last word. A definite keeper.
How do you keep youtube at the highest resolution?
Got to go back and see that some more and anything else from that night.

ps: Who's the reggae group at 4 or 5 on 1?

    ReplyDelete
  34. About the resolution, I guess it all depends how much you compress it, and then how you encode it, and the source of course. I looked for more stuff from that night on youtube, and there was nothing apart little snippets, but there is an AMAZING version of My Baby Just Cares For Me, at Montreux but a few years later it seems.

  35. Don't follow youtube's instructions and upload a 320 x 240 file cos the actual youtube player is bigger than that (425 x 3something) - tis best to go from bigger to smaller.

  40. ejay: I checked amazon, they have the DVD for $10, I'm ordering it from them.
That 'my baby,...' cut is also amazing, a piano tour de force, never heard her play like that. It reinforces my thoughts that she's one of the most overlooked and underrated pianists in jazz and you can always hear her classical chops, Bach's always in there.

    shane: Thanks.

  41. Evening All. Back from my sunny Bank Holiday weekend, and yes, Shane is right about Pt1#16:

Mark Lanegan Band - Morning Glory Wine. I was going to stick my bottom lip out that obviously no-one was listening to my BookLaunch Social CD, til I realised I chose Strange Religion (from the same BubbleGum album) instead, didn't I?!

Back later when I've caught up with everything else ...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Is pt1#18 Loudon Wainwright? Can't ID the song?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Just watched My Baby just Cares for Me at Montreux, and I'm UNDONE. She kills me.

  50. Sherlock steenbeck wins!
British sea powers 'blackout' at #1

for a bit of extra cheating you could go to
    imeem.com
search for shane m in 'people'
on page two you will see
    shane wantsbeer
    look in profile/music

should have the whole lot there..full songs not 30 second clips
couldn't work out how to do a playlist I'm a bit dumb...but it has been a fine test of how to use audacity.
And getting on imeem (wont work for me using firefox.)

do you want me to leave part two up
its tough! still 12 songs un-solved.

    ReplyDelete
  55. And I know them ALL, because I just went to imeem. Mwah ha ha. I'll stop guessing. It makes a good playlist, though. And I know when Saneshane's birthday is, if imeem is to be believed.

    ReplyDelete
  56. imeem is only giving you 30 second clips again.. even going round the houses..did work earlier..oh well! is that right steen?
I know your birthday too..ha ha.

    ReplyDelete
  57. i know them all too now, not that i would have got any more than i already did though.

    ReplyDelete
  58. steen; your birthday is two days after mine in June!

    ReplyDelete
  59. from the start of june 'til the end.
Maybe enough time for us to all have a turn on the decks...

    ReplyDelete
  60. We can meet halfway--for the entire month of june we can set something up with a bar and a dj booth in the middle of the Atlantic, and anyone that has some time to spare can drop by.

    ReplyDelete
  61. incidentally, i just checked our figures, and visitor numbers are up again.

if all 2,145 unique folks who've read our blog in the last 4 weeks come to our party and stay for the average amount of time (4 minutes 14 seconds) then we'll have an amazing yet brief party going on!

4.14 is just the right amount of time to play nearly all of "My Sharona" by The Knack!

Party on! My, my, my -Whooooooo!

    ReplyDelete
  62. A week ago we were taking about breaking 50, now everybody's going for the 'ton', except of course Maddy whose numbers are down; if I were her I'd rejoice.
