the King - lyrics quiz

10 Lyrics featuring Elvis Presley (dead or alive) - See if you can identify them (warning: one of them is from a Dutch "artist"):

1. I saw Elvis Presley walk out of a 7-Eleven
And a woman gave birth to a baby and then bowled 257

2. She was humming Suspicion, that's the song she liked best
She had Elvis I Love You tattooed on her breast
When they landed in Memphis, well her heart beat so fast

3. Hey Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?

4. That be tellin' Julio Iglesias what to sing, now.
Now, whoever said that Sidney Poitier was a blind man,
Knew the same of Elvis Presley, too.

5. I don't believe that Elvis is dead
I don't believe that Elvis is dead

6. Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud

7. Elvis is in everybody out there.
Everybody's got Elvis in them!
Everybody except one person that is...
Yeah, one person!
The evil opposite of Elvis.
The Anti-Elvis
Anti-Elvis got no Elvis in 'em,
lemme tell ya.
Michael J. Fox has no Elvis in him.

8. I remember the disc-jockey was playing "Jailhouse Rock"
When I had my first date with a beautiful girl
and since that evening you've been my friend
Elvis !

9. Picture a zombie Elvis
In a tacky white jump suit
Just imagine a rotting Elvis
Shopping for fresh fruit

10. Man I was beat, I was driven by the heat
Down to Elvis Presley Blvd. in a one-way dead end street

  2. Including Fight The Power would have been easy, I was hoping for a point there. I have a feeling the first one is from Beck. After a quick check, I see that I'm wrong.

  5. I would only have known REM. But here's another...

  6. Is that from Mos Def's Rock & Roll, Steen?

  7. Yes it is. It's a song with a musical twist.

  8. 5 is Bush (not Kate) Everything Zen. I bet lots of people knew that but I was the only one to admit it. Not Tackhead DsD, but Dickhead.

  9. 2 is really bugging me. Will have to google it to scratch the itch.

    How about
"Get a new suit for the man
    who discovered Elvis
Was so fat when he died
    and ascend to heaven
I live here in my watered down disney baby
With yen million attic clad genius"
These lyrics make Richard Jobson look like Status Quo.

  10. 3 was easy, need to think about the rest.......

  11. The first one is Chocolate Cake by Crowded House.

  12. Here's two more to be going on with:

"Then someone sat me down last night, and I heard Caruso sing.
He's almost as good as Presley, and if I only do one thing,
I'll sing songs to my father, I'll sing songs to my child."

    "The funeral cars crawl down,
    The heartbreak side of town,
    The mourners all discuss,
The boy who caused a fuss,
We chopped a billion trees to print up eulogies,
But guys we should have guessed,
The girls would say it best."

The second is one isn't explicitly about Presley but believe me, it is.

  13. 2 is "Galway To Graceland" by the lyrical Richard Thompson. Apart from 3 _some_ of the rest look easy... but they ain't.

TonNL, you never responded to my guess about the New Wave/Latino dude in your Beautiful People quizlet. Was it Willy (Mink) DeVille?

  14. You could also have:

"Just a country boy that combed his hair
And put on a shirt his mother made and went on the air
And he shook it like a chorus girl
And he shook it like a Harlem queen
He shook it like a midnight rambler, baby,
Like you never seen, like you never seen."

  15. A-a-and one guaranteed NOT to be on Blimpy's iPod:

"Elvis landed in a ro-ro-rocket ship,
Healed a couple of lepers, and disappeared"

Anyway I'm going to listen to a little bit of Dread Zeppelin ("Tort-Elvis has LEFT the building!") now before taking my chronic headache'n'shivers to bed.

  16. So far, so good:
    1. Crowded House - Chocolate Cake
    2. Richard Thompson - From Galway to Graceland
    3. REM - Man on the moon
    4. Butthole Surfers - Moving to Florida
    5. Bush - Everything Zen
    6. Kate Bush - King of the mountain
    7.
    8. Dutch schmaltz tribute, released the day Elvis left his earthly building (which meant that it had been lying around for months/years waiting for 'that moment'...), instant number one
    9. Someone named the band, but did not associate it with these words....
    10.

@Shivsidecar: yes, Willy Deville was the guy I was looking for, sorry for not checking that one anymore....

  17. Thanks Ton. 9 is Living Colour's Elvis Is Dead.

And re your comment about No8 - I believe there are several songs waiting to be released the day The Grantham Milk Snatcher pops her clogs; can't wait to hear 'em!!

  18. ... and I got Proudfoot's suggestion by cheating and typing *Elvis* into my music database search function and then playing the resulting (surprisingly few) songs that had were title- rather than artist- related.

    Yorkshire crooner's rockier past incarnation.

  19. toffeeboy. Your first is 'Everything But the Girl'. I like them but have a problem with that song. If Caruso is only 'almost' as good as Elvis why did Elvis not cause the epiphany?

    ReplyDelete
  20. @cb - I agree that it doesn't entirely make sense but I think there's a touch of irony at play here. Personally, I think it's one of Ben Watt's best lyrics. The line about "The holidays at Oban and the towns around Montrose" is one of the most evocative images I've ever heard in song. There's something so down to earth and real about it.

  21. And of course we could also have:

"Elvis was a hero to many,
But he never meant shit to me"

We've got enough for a pretty interesting RR list here!

  22. Yes, the Hawley tinged Longpigs. I can't make up my mind about them. Played the album to death when it came out but not sure it's stood the test of time (whatever that means).
