Musical Connections Quiz!

If any of you are readers of the AV Club (and if not, you should be) you might have seen this already, but it was quite a fun quiz so I thought I'd engage in a bit of shameless plagiarism and post it over here (they can't complain since they took it out of a book anyway...).
I managed a fairly pathetic two fully correct and two half right - I'm expecting a much better performance from the rest of you...

  2. 5 is easy. They all had Eric Clapton (most overrated guitar player of all time) in the lineup.

  3. 5 and 12 are right. You're halfway there on 7, and 14 is close but not quite there. The answers are all in the comments here.

  4. I knew No.5, correctly guessed No.12 (before looking at these commentss), and had EXACTLY the same thought as Shane re No.7.

Similar thought re No.1 - Is 'siblings' too simple, or did you start us with an easy one?

  5. Got it steenbeck. 1 - again you're halfway right.

  6. Yay! A few clues: you were right about 14 in that you can get it from the band names alone - you don't need to know anything about them. 4 shouldn't be too hard to guess. For 9, The Verve would also fit.

  7. 3. James Bond
    4. suicide
    13 Superman

  8. 8. Talk Talk would also fit....

    ReplyDelete
  9. 9. the Charlatans UK, Dinosaur, Green Jello, London Suede
...and, like you said, Verve would also fit....
Of course, all bands who had to change their names because of legal (registered trademark) reasons...

  10. Did you put that picture up on purpose? The ex-guru did that.

  12. 2 are all named after films, non?

  13. Good work all round - correct answers for 2, 3, 4, 6 and 13. I think 8 is another half-right tonnl - Talk Talk would only fit one part of the answer.

ejaydee - I was wondering if anyone would remember that. I've actually got the poster of the map up in my flat.

  14. 10. duos

    and re 8: bandname = song-title

  15. Me too! Well I did in London at least.

  16. No.11 - not twins, but triplets!

You could multiply the words "Turn", "No", "Bye" and "Yummy" x 3 for some well-known song-titles.

Or you could stand on your head in the corner in a bucket of tripe. In my day we made our own entertainment.

  17. Hmm... no.15.

Do the letters "X" "A" "i" and "Z" have any relevance here?

  18. I've not looked at the other comms yet promise! so here goes!!

    1. Siblings
    2. Elvis? Lots of ex-members?
    3. They all did Bond themes
    4. Suicide
    5. Eric Clapton
    6. Singing drummers?
    7. Fae the Weedge
    8. Eponymity
    9. Forced to amend their names
    10. Duos?
    11. Singers and their solo careers?
    12. Named after lyrics
    13. Songs about Superman
    14. Their names make sense when written out of context
    15. Stumped!!!

Phew, that was fun, Mrs McFlah helped too!!

  19. If 13 is indeed that they did songs about Superman, then it could include Crash Test Dummies.

  21. Top performance from Team McFlah!
    Just a few corrections:
    1 - specifically twins
    2 - named after films
7 - would also have accepted "soapdodgers"
8 - needs to be more specific
11 & 15 - shivsidecar got these just above: song titles with the same word repeated 3 times; and album titles consisting of a single letter.

So I think 8 is the only one not answered so far - anyone?

And any Glasgwegians feel free to give some abuse of Edinbuggers in return...

  22. all bands listed for #8 have eponymous LPs whcih contain within them eponymous songs!!
