dragonfly cake

I didn't want to leave everyone on tenterhooks as to how to make a dragonfly cake out of two 10 " rounds. But I'll be perfectly frank, I don't have any songs about dragonfly birthday cakes.

  1. steenbeck, that looks fantastic - and I expect it tasted as good as it looks!

Songs about dragonfly birthday cakes ... hmmm ... that's a bit of a challenge. Not even Jonathan's covered that particular theme. But if he did, I suppose it would go something like this...

"Dragonfly birthday cake on the plate,
I see you there and I just can't wait,
Dragonfly birthday cake on the table,
Can I resist? - no, I'm just not able."

    Well, it's a start...

  2. Or the Fall version:

    "What you make-ah?
    It was a green-ah,
    dragonfly-ah,
    It was a cake-ah."

    (repeat 97 times)

  3. Here's the Dylan version from Blonde on Blonde:

Well, I see you got your smartie-covered 10” dragonfly birthday cake
Yes, I see you got your smartie-covered 10” dragonfly birthday cake
Well, you must tell me, baby
Does you tummy start to ache,
After your smartie-covered 10” dragonfly birthday cake?

    Well, it looks so pretty
Honey, can I guzzle it sometime?
    Yes, I just wanna see
If it's really that expensive kind
You know it balances on the table
    Just like a mattress balances
    On a bottle of wine
Your smartie-covered 10” dragonfly birthday cake

Well, if you wanna see the sun rise
    Honey, I know where
We'll go out and see it sometime
We'll both just sit there and stare
Me with my bowl of jelly
    Wrapped around my head
    And you just sittin' there
Eatin’ your smartie-covered 10” dragonfly birthday cake

Well, I asked the doctor if I could eat it
It's bad for your health, he said
    Yeah, I disobeyed his orders
    I came to eat it
But I found him there instead
You know, I don't mind him cheatin' on me
But I sure wish he'd hadn’t eaten both the wings
Of your smartie-covered 10” dragonfly birthday cake

Well, I see you got a new boyfriend
You know, I never seen him before
Well, I saw him licking the Kenwood Chef mixer bowl
You forgot to close the kitchen door
You might think he loves you for your money
But I know what he really loves you for
    It's your smartie-covered 10” dragonfly birthday cake

  4. Proud: That's fantastic, absolutely right on Dylan, you should get the music for it and post it.

  5. Holy Smoke, I just nearly spewed tea all over my keyboard because of too much giggling. But that's okay cause it's too damn hot to be drinking tea anyway. Those were all amazing!

And what's inside it? Dragonfly guts, of course, crunchy, chewy dragonfly guts--the veggie version, of course. Is there anything they can't make out of soybeans these days? Actually it's entirely molded out of courgettes. Okay. it's a vanilla cake with a dash of amaretto and a sprinkling of chocolate chips.

  6. Do they have smarties in the US, though?

  7. I found this on the 'tube. Looks like Dylan ripped off our Dragonfly cake song and made it into something about a hat.

Songs about hats? Quite a rich seam to be dug there. I can think of loads. Well about 5 at least.

  8. This Charming Cake, by the Smiths

    A melted candle
    On a sponge cake desolate
Will this recipe make a cake for me yet ?

    This charming cake
    On my unhappy birthday

    Why pamper life's complexity
When castor sugared wings run smooth
And will never fly away ?

I would eat all the cake
But I never cared for marzipan
    And I may throw
    Up on the patio…

    A jumped up pantry boy
    Who never knew his place
    “Return the party rings
And give back all my Jaffa cakes
And give back all my Jaffa cakes
    That were there to decorate”

I would eat all the cake
But the blue smarties are full of preservatives
My mum said "It's gruesome that something so fattening should remain"
She knows so much about icing
She knows so much about icing
She knows so much about icing

I'll get me coat. And party bag.

  9. I'm going to nominate that for the brands list because of all the smarties references. (although TFD is right, we're a sad, smarties-free nation. they're m&ms). I think I might be able to play This Charming Man on the guitar. And Malcolm got a kazoo for his birthday...We'll set it to music!! Last night after the party Malcolm was all hopped up on sugar, tearing through the house playing the kazoo and dragging twelve blue balloons behind him, shrieking little brother in tow. Good times.

  10. That's one cool cake Steenbeck.
I normally cheat and do jelly bases with carved fruit on top- I think the last three have been
    Two swans swimming across a crocodile infested pond;
    A dragon about to fly out of a lava lake;
and most recently, a circus ring with trapeze, and clumsy jelly bear acrobats.
Flower pots with "earth", "worms", and real flowers also went down well for the "birds" birthday party.

Awesome lyrics by the way, Proudfoot.

  12. Pixies?

    there was a dragonfly
a dragonfly who controlled the air
got killed by 10 million pounds of icing
    from Lambertville New jersey
    this dragonfly's gone to heaven.

    if man is 5
    then Malcolm is 6
    then Malcolm is 6
    and the dog is 7
    this dragonfly's gone to heaven!

The sister in law is actually searching out her courgette cake recipe..the mum in law did courgette brownies...they failed though.
We want Malcolm on kazoo on your next track please.

  13. Nice one shane!
I added a couple of photos of Mara's birthday cakes to my Chilly Blue post of a week or two ago, they sound better than they look.. the kids really loved putting their hands into the jelly to fish things out..

  14. Nilpferd, love the cakes. Ingenious.

Shane, Pixies--brilliant. Who knew posting a couple dopey pictures of a cake would provoke such 'Spillish genious?

  15. Stephen Malkmus did 'Dragonfly Pie' and that is the closest I can get to a proper song on the subject. (Deezer is your friend)

(and how did we both miss Cracker before the mid day cut off point a late D'oh Dond)

    nilpferd
jellys look a lot of fun to eat (and a good colour set from when I was away)
