It's another case of mistaken identity!

Inspired by Toffeeboy's homonyms game, I plunged into my own collection to see how many songs I could find that had the same name as some better known tunes. Surprisingly few, as it turned out. But here is, as House of Pain would say, the cream of the crop (apart from Blackbird, which is beautiful would be too obviously by a Mercury-nominated folk group from the north east).

In true RR fashion, I've stretched Toffeeboy's rules a bit – Cannonball is a one-word title but as a word, it's hardly been common currency since Cromwell, and It's a Wonderful Life isn't a homonym for Black's hit, but it's a great film and this list needed some alt.country – so, press play and guess the artist. There's precisely nothing here by

• The Mamas and The Papas!
• The Chemical Brothers!
• Iggy and the Stooges!
• Patsy Kensit and Eighth Wonder!
• Foreigner!
• Van Morrison!
• Stevie Wonder!
• James (thanks, gremlinfc)!
• The Four Tops!
• INXS!
• The Chemical Brothers (again!!)!
• James Stewart and Donna Reed!
• The Police!
• Queen!
• The Breeders!
• Radiohead!

As always, I hope you have fun…

EDIT: I'm turning this into a Podbean to see if that works…
EDIT2: The quiz is currently down for maintenance. It should be back up at lunchtime. Sorry about this.
EDIT3: Here we go again… and it works. Yeehaw! And Rich, you're right, that is Sparklehorse.

  1. Aha, more fun with Boxtr - nice one.

Working deaf, will take a stab at Damien Rice for Cannonball & The Jam for Setting Sun, even though it's the wrong type of sun.

  2. Gareth, are you out of bandwidth?

I only got the 'wonderful' Sparklehorse to play before it jumped forward to Carole's KC Larks' Tongues.

  6. So far, we've got a right Sparklehorse, gremlin. Although I did hear the edited version of I Can't Help Myself on the radio last night. Why did Coe play the radio edit after 10pm? "Runts", indeed…
DsD – my bandwidth seems to be alright.

  7. Don't have time this morning, but only 3 tunes would play last night.

    Back later.

  8. Gah, I didn't miss out on pilfering the Orange Juice track while it was up on Boxstr. Will have to fathom out Blimpy's instructions for downloading off the Podbean players.

Overall, though, holy hatful of homonymns, Batman - this must be the work of The Riddler.

  9. Missed out an anguished, "did I?" at the end of that first sentence. The answer is, yes, I did.

  10. That's no Orange Juice, May1366. This one is so strong that you get the radio edit clean version after the watershed. In fact, had it been released in time, it would have been a beauty for the sweary songs list…

  11. Uunnhh? Where's me downloadable Boxstrs gone?!

Bloody glad I got the Third Guitar safely into the Inbox last night.

The voice on Can't Help Myself is annoying me with the bodyswerves it keeps giving my brain's Voicematcher® - it's not quite Nick Cave, and far too far south for Edwyn Collins; I'm gonna kick myself, I just know it ...

  12. Rich, I took them all down as they weren't playing properly. I've turned them all into proper mp3s now, so will try to put them back up when I get back from HMHB.

  13. I can't get the Podbean to work - each track takes ages to load then sits there doing nothing for a while...

  17. @ gremlin - What? You mean it ISN'T Hugh Cornwell?? Or were my references actually too subtle?
[*Splutter!* "Subtle? DsD?! Mutually exclusive, I'd say! - Ed.]

@ Gareth - Sorry, didn't mean to sound sulky earlier! I did start listening this evening, but have been distracted by Calexico completely transforming the forgettable album version of Red Blooms into a thing of total guitar beauty on FabChannel.

Anyway, I'm being a wuss tonight 'cause I'm knackered.

    G'night all.

  18. @darceysdad - oh away wit cha you are a one ain't cha - you are most correct good sir - it's the man himself and what an absolute gent he is too.

  19. Rich, relax – you didn't sound sulky. It's annoying for me when you put something like this up and it won't work for some of you and Toffeeboy. Have you tried it in another browser, Toffeeboy? I'm using Firefox (both here and at work) and it's playing without problems on that.

    Anyway:
    3 is Vitalic (gremlinfc),
    8 is Findlay Brown (gremlinfc),
    12 is Sparklehorse (DsD),
    16 is Gonzales (gremlinfc)

  20. @ garethi - it's working now - listening and enjoying in ignorant bliss (so far).

  21. Well #6 is The Isley Brothers- and a dang fine track it is too.

In fact garethi, if you ever get tired of your record collection I think I could find a home for it - I'm loving this playlist.

  22. Thanks, Toffeeboy. I've been casting around for an Isley Brothers CD with this and Fight The Power on it – both of mine are from compilations.

  23. Brown Eyed Girl was on Live It Up - which I once had on vinyl but it's long since disappeared into the ether...

Rich, Baby Don't Cry is from The World's Rarest Funk 45s Volume 2. It's worth getting the whole album.
