Memory Lane

Memoria - Murcof
Between The Bars - Chris Garneau
Candleland - Ian McCulloch
Some Will Pay - Howard Devoto
Futures And Pasts - The Fall
Goodbye to Old Friends - Stuart Staples
All Your Life - Nina Nastasia
Ask Me About Jon Stross - Thee More Shallows
Maybe Sprout Wings - Mountain Goats
Memorial - Explosions In The Sky

Quite excited about this one, as never have so many of my favorite artists had a great tune to fit the same theme. By coincidence, Ian, Howard and Stuart are going it alone, without the usual supporting band, and even Liz Fraiser popped in to help out. Nearly left The Fall out again, as they don't fit the mood too well, but couldn't do it to them two weeks in a row. Pic is by (Erik) on Flikr, so go see if his other work is as good as this. Warn you now this one gets pretty bleak and there may be tears. Sure something happier will be along later, but I love a good sad song.

No questions or quizzes, just enjoy the tunes and sign the visitor book if you feel like it.

  1. ok songs off:
we shall all be healed = paper
    the sunset tree = scissors
    get lonely = stone

we should do an ask the experts post, pick a band with a large collection of songs and narrow them down to a cd-r sized best of: would help sometimes.
Most people on here would want the lot if they liked them... but finances limit that.
Think I'm on six albums and some odd tunes for the mountain goats.. dread to think of your fall count.. and the collected J. Richman by others on here would possibly make a mountain. Yo la Tengo also record when others relax!

anyway it's looking like a corker so shall listen as soon as possible.

  2. That's a great idea for a post, Shane. Spill best of albums. Awesome. Put it up. Put it up.

  3. after the weekend.. when this quietens down.. I'm guessing.. there would need to be a way of who to start with... and how to go about it!

but I think it would help sometimes.. for me most definitely .. however many records I buy.. history is one step ahead.

  4. You can borrow the listy from a couple of weeks back if you want. What about some Shane cover art for the comps we come up with? This is going to be HUGE.

  5. The lyrics to all of these (except the instumental bookends, obviously) are tremendous. Think I will post them all later to see if you all agree.

  6. I'll do covers for it.. I've got a shelf of the first year of RR that I did comps for with cover designs.

god I'm sad... didn't they invent drugs to keep people like me busy? or subdued (is that a spelling from hell)

I'd liked the lyrics to the bookends too.

this is the last comment I make tonight .. I've hurt my head with all these letter type things.. get me on the cover designs....

oh.. I'll do a post for it after the memories.

  7. that's a really nice playlist Shoegazer.
I have the Explosions In The Sky track but all the others were new to me.
I especially loved the beautiful minimalism of the Murcof track and the Stuart Staples one was great too.

  8. Glad you liked it Jap. Your "beautiful minimalism" description gives Murcof the credit they deserve, unlike my feable attempt at promoting this one over on the mothership.

  9. I'll get donding on the mothership in a sec. (although it still takes my server bleedin' ages to refresh, so I might have to wrestle with it for a while).

Inspired by another track on your playlist, between this post and my last post I cycled into town and picked up a copy of Nina Nastasia's "Dogs" album (for about a fiver - on vinyl of course)which I saw "All Your Life" was from. She is an artist i've known about for a while, but not really heard. Looking forward to the whole album...

  10. JaP, never inspired anyone to get on their bike before. Now go back out & get "The Blackened Air" & the new Mogwai.

  11. I've listened to "Dogs" twice now and it's wonderful, thanks! I'll definitely be getting "The Blackened Air" at some point.

The new Mogwai has already been on my turntable for a couple of weeks, Mogwai never disappoint do they?

  12. Bah! Can't find the lyrics for Howard or Stuart, but here are the rest.

    Between the Bars

    Drink up baby
    stay up all night
    the things you could do
    you wont but you might
    the potential you'll be
    that you'll never see
    the promises you'll only make
    drink up with me now
    and forget all about
    the pressure of days
    and do what i say
    and I'll make you okay
    and drive them away
the images stuck in your head
    the people you've been before
that you don't want 'round anymore
    or that push and shove
and wont bend to your will
    i'll keep them still

    Drink up baby
    look at the stars
    i'll kiss you again
    between the bars
where i'm seeing you there [faint car horn!]
with ur hands in the air
you're waiting to finally be caught
    drink up one more time
    and i'll make you mine
    i'll keep you apart
    deep in my heart
    separate than the rest
where i like you the best
and keep the things you forgot
    the people you've been before
that you don't want 'round anymore
    or that push and shove
and wont bend to your will
    i'll keep them still
    the people you've been before
that you don't want 'round anymore
    or that push and shove
and wont bend to your will
    i'll keep them still

    Candleland

    Get your handful of remembrance
For you to sprinkle through your life
    In between the penance
That you carry by your side
With the make belief and miracles
    That only come alive

    In Candleland, Candleland

    Wear your guilt like skin
    And keep your sins disguised
    Take some salt and sugar
And rub it in your eyes
You'll know that somethings left you
    Just as you arrive

    In Candleland, Candleland

    I walked back inside me
I'd gone back for my youth
As I came down the fire escape
It must have stayed up on the roof
    They say you just know
And that knowing is the proof

    Of Candleland, Candleland

    Candleland (candle)...

    Candle, candle, Candleland

    Futures & Pasts

I was in a sleeping dream
When a policeman brought my mother home
By the window I didn't scream
I was too old for that

I was in a drunken dream
    The pubs were closed
    It was three o'clock
At the bottom of the street it seemed
There was a policeman lost in the fog

    I understand but I don't see it
    I understand but I don't see it
    I understand but I don't read it
    Futures and Pasts

You can cry for your lost childhood
Will you cry for our lost childhoods?
But remember how you hated it
And worse cause you couldn't state it?

And it's time for the note, see it
And it's time for the note, say it
And it's time for the note, read it
    Futures and Pasts

Look at the woman of thirty-nine
Look at the man of forty-nine
You can read their lousy lives
You can see their ugly face lines

They understand but they don't see it
They understand but they don't see it
    I understand but I don't read it
    Futures and Pasts

    I understand but I don't see it
    I understand but I don't see it
    I understand but I don't read it
    Futures and Pasts

    All Your Life

    Busted chin
    Seeing stars
    Glaring at your handlebars
    Your handlebars

    Why don't you
    Try again
    All your life
    You couldn't win
    You couldn't win

    She's never coming back
    She's never coming back
    And all this waiting
    Is bringing me down

    Heroin
    Makes you thin
    You're so high
    You can't look up
    You can't look up

    Why don't you
    Try again
    All your life
    You couldn't win
    You couldn't win

    She's never coming back
    She's never coming back
    And all this waiting
    Is bringing me down

    She's never coming back
    She's never coming back
    And all this waiting
    Is bringing me down

    Ask Me About John Stross

I take my seat as the scenery flickers on
An exercise tape for the waking dawn
First go the trees changing grey to green behind the wires
And then the sun comes up on a field full of tires

I felt two things at once when I heard the news
I felt upset but I was also confused
How did you see your way free to do what you did?
I guess I still thought of you as that happy kid

But outside the scenery is getting better
Who can be sad in with all this space and time passing by?
I'm on my way to the funeral of you, my childhood brother
And all I can do is look out the window and smile

    Maybe Sprout Wings

A bad dream shook me in my sleep
    And I woke up sweating
Ran through the dark to the shower
    Already forgetting

    Try to think good thoughts
Trying to find my way clear
Let the room fill with steam
    Trace pictures on the mirror

    Ghosts and clouds
    And nameless things
Squint your eyes and hope real hard
    Maybe sprout wings

I clawed my way to the living room window
    Stood there in the cold
The last bits of my dream like figures in the distance
    Hard to hold

    I thought of old friends
    the one's who'd gone missing
Said all their names three times
    Phantoms in the early dark
    Canaries in the mines

    Ghosts and clouds
    And nameless things
Squint your eyes and hope real hard
    Maybe sprout wings
