Hello everyone - was off computer yesterday so only just caught up with this - obviously the techie team saw DarceysDad was back and thought: quick, close the blog! Just joking Dsd! From what I remember from when this happened last time, there is a tag that has to be attached to the blog when it is uploaded to keep it open all week, and if the person in charge of uploading forgets to put that tag on (they have to add quite a few) then it will close early. I'm now very intrigued by the identity of the moderator who occasionally contributes... Apart from that, wanted to add for Abahachi: yes, your assessment of my character is spot on, and I fully expect to have some kind of nervous breakdown when the kids hit teenagerdom. Woo-hoo, can't wait, etc. Anyway, I'm horrifically behind this week, so better crack on, but thanks to all for a rousing read as usual x
Thanks as ever, Maddy, for the demystification. Having seen the film City of Ember the other day, in which school leavers are randomly assigned the jobs they will keep for the rest of their lives, all geared towards supporting the machine that generates their entire world, I now have an image of a callow steampunk character assigned the job of blog-tagger, momentarily distracted by adolescent yearnings for the angular charms of Saoirse Ronan as she runs past, and allowing the RR tag to drop from his quivering hands. So I'm holding onto that image as it makes me feel much better about the whole thing.
The mystery moderator showing up on the blog like a plain-clothes priest is quite another point of interest, mind. It's a disincentive to give him a hard time, knowing he's a fellow traveller, although the idea that correcting a mistake sets an unwanted precedent is surely gobbledigook, especially as the chances of young Saoirse sprinting past again and meeting the dozy emo blog-tagger's gaze with her permanently startled eyes at just that moment are pretty slim.

I do understand the frustrations of us being policed by jackbooted no-marks. One of my friends actually does some of that work for Google, and has been co-incidentally telling me about what he does.
If it is all getting too much, being constantly bombarded with threats etc., then calling it quits is perfectly sensible, and you would have my full support.
The 'Spill's raison d'etre (sorry, no character map available for accents on this computer access) is as light relief amongst friends, and none of us wish grief on each other. That's why I quit RR in the first place, because the enjoyment was outweighed by the techie grief&stress incurred.
But let's not go without one last glorious last stand - if you ARE potentially serious, let's at least discuss how best to point the fingers and shout blame loudly at those who would be the cause of our demise.

@Mnemonic et al: Alan Evans made a comment on the 'best album' blog last night that I am 'CiF's resident Deadhead'. He may be a particularly observant blogger but more likely he is the moderator in question. This is a little disturbing for me as he appears to be knowledgeable in the Dead arena and even has a favourite Dead live album!
I was just joshing about deleting the blog, although my point about the DMCA thing stands. The DMCA have been persecuting bloggers of late, sometimes for putting up mp3s that were given away free by bands/labels.
Luckily we've only had 3 takedown notices, which has resulted in us deleting a few posts (before google could delete them themselves).
Quite a few respectable blogs have moved to self publishing as a result of DMCA harrassment.
The ironic thing is, between all 62 registered Spillers, we probably throw more money at the record industry than 100,000 (non music geeks) combined - a figure that has no doubt gone up as a result of the 'Spill bringing to light all the weird and wonderful musics wot exist in this world.
(No hangover for me, abahachi!! god only knows why....)
Speng will be moderating the blog again for the next 6 years, as of Saturday, so that'll be something to look forward to....(kidding....)
I contemplated, for at least thirty seconds, asking everyone to send me figures for (i) amount spent on music in 2008; (ii) amount spent on music in each of previous five years; (iii) estimate for amount of time spent listening to new music, viewing new websites etc. as a result of recommendations on here. I could then produce a full economic analysis of the impact of the 'Spill on the music industry, which I strongly suspect would confirm Blimpy's hunch. But unfortunately I do have work to do in the next week...

My record was 75 quid for a Travelodge in York for a gig that was 7 quid on the door.
Well, yes, I think we ought to consider our contribution to the wider economy as well as specifically to the music industry - although that may mean we need to factor in lost productivity due to spending time on the web rather than getting on with work.
.. and I've just spent £71 on train tickets for the two Panic Room gigs in Swansea and London at the end of the month. One is £6 on the door, the other one I've already paid for as it's a rescheduled gig from the one where the power failed last April.
