Quiz Time - the DsD way

.

So here it is, my first attempt at a quiz. This is an old-fashioned 'Connection' question, so it's a point for each artist, each songtitle, and if the magic word(s) ain't in those two things, two Spill points for identifying the connecting piece of data. The three Spill points for the actual connection should be easy money, as you don't need all of the songs to spot it. An unprecedented five Spill points for identifying the double connection one! And a warning, I do get a little contrived (Jimmy Saville-style) with making a couple of the tunes fit the idea, but hey, it's my quiz ... if you don't like it, I'll be left sitting alone with me pint of Guinness!!!!!

I've tried not to include too many heavy rockers, but No.5 - a direct (songtitle) response to today's inept performance by my beloved Reds - got a late vote-in!

Soulsavers - Blackout : 2pts to saneshane
The Black (Sweden) - Enter Sandman / Take A Chance On Me : see below.
Jon Auer - Song Noir : 2pts to TonNL
Go Home Productions - Rock In Black : 2pts to saneshane
Turbonegro - Self-Destructo Bust : 2pts to saneshane
Japan - Wish You Were Black : 2pts to frogprincess
The Crystalites - Blacula : 1pt to saneshane, 1pt retained by me!
Scout Niblett - Elizabeth (Black-hearted Queen) : 4pts to saneshane's Dad
Paul Anka - Black Hole Sun : 2pts to TonNL
Ella Guru - Base Is The Spine : 4pts to AliMunday (Jimmy Carl Black vocal)

For The Black, I figure it's 2½ pts to saneshane's mate; ½pt to AliM; 2pts EJD. Shane got the 3pts for 'Black' as the connection.

I hope you enjoyed it, but if I've not pitched this right, please feel free to tell me: you can't make my mood any, um, BLACKER than Mr.Southgate's boys & Mr.Redknapp's cross-eyed twerps already have.

  2. Black/ Noir

I'll buy you a pint of the black stuff

    and I'll start with
    Soulsavers 'Black out'
.. I'm going to let others wake up and have a go!

  3. A solid 5 point start for Shane (and no, you cannot pass them on to a Mr. B. Gunn of your acquaintance).

The photo is an adrenalin-rushed Darcey after she nearly shot horizontally out of that thar Dizzunee slide, helped by the clothes she was wearing (I got a cracking shot of static when I picked her up).

    Bedtime.

  4. Unbelievably cute picture, DsD.

#4 is We Will Rock You, is it Queen? I don't really understand the quiz, I'm afraid. It's so complicated. Connecting what now?

    ReplyDelete
  5. #3 is the absolutely brilliant "Song Noir" by (ex-?)Posie Jon Auer, from his great "songs from the year of our demise" album, highly recommended, don't (yet) see the connection between #1, #2 (an Abba/Nirvana mashup?), this one and #4 that Queen/AC/DC/Led Zep Mash-up....

    ReplyDelete
  6. #9: Black Hole Sun by Paul Anka...,
    still not seeing any connections....

  7. I'm not playing today, because the titles come up at the bottom of the screen when I click each track, and I CANNOT overlook them (not even with 20 years' training at ignoring subtitles on films - just can't do it). And I'd only have known about two anyway...

    Cute photo, DsD!

  8. Great photo DsD - is 2 connected because it's by Enter Sandman (which is also the name of a Metallica track to which the lyrics go "enter night, exit light..." or something? Therefore night / black etc? Or is that just too obscure?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Or the fact that maybe it was on their "black" album?

    ReplyDelete
  10. It also uses the same opening riff as Enter Sandman, in fact it may be a mash-up.

I know how you feel Dsd, it was about this time a year ago that we started giving it away to the VioletFace's bunch.

  11. 4 points to TonNL for Nos. 3 & 9.

AliM and ejaydee are close, but no cigar just yet, re No. 4. Half a point to Ali for citing Enter Sandman, because she's only halfway to the full song title (don't stop at the recognised intro, keep listening). Definite point to Ed for the fact Metallica's *original* [hint] of Enter Sandman is from the LP known as "The Black Album".

  12. Oh, and Debby: thanks for your honesty, but how is your system doing that?! Are you clicking the play triangle, or on the actual "No.x" ?

    ReplyDelete
  13. #4 is Mark Vidler/go home Productions 'Rock In Black' mash-up..

I'm taking it slow.. I knew 9 and 3 too!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I just searched my Superbad Blaxploitation triple CD collection and 'Blacula' isn't on it.. thought I had another.. didn't gnarls barcley do a video pastiching the movie... umm.. Can you tell I'm avoiding Work!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Another point to Shane.

And I've under-credited ejaydee for the Metallica Black album spot; under my scoring system, that was two points.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I clicked on that little *play* triangle to the left of the list - was I doing something wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  17. No, that's correct for just playing the songs.

If you click on the actual title (or in this case the No.x) it gives you the option to dl the song to your system, and I wondered if that highlighted the supposedly 'hidden' info.

No worries, Debby, just a shame you couldn't actually play.

    ;o)

  18. No 10 - Base is the spine - is it Jimmy Carl Black on vocal?

    ReplyDelete
  19. At this point I realise that nobody's claimed the connection ponts, which is black, I reckon.

    ReplyDelete
  20. And should have mentioned Ella Guru (no 10)

  21. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Four points to Ali, none to Ed because Shane beat you to 'Black' right at the top of the comments.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, I'd read it, but hadn't realised SHane was giving the answer.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's OK Ed, Shane can have the connection points, you can have the connection bridges - tee-hee!

    ReplyDelete
  25. he he I just worked out the band for the Liverpool one
Turbonegro oh it's playing again I guess it'd be called Self destruct then. Not really my strong point.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Close enough Shane. Actual title is 'SelfDestructo Bust'. Two points more to you than LFC got yesterday!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Grins - got N° 6 Darce. It's Japan and I wish you were black. Good geetar riff, innit tho?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Especially for you, fp !! Thanks for the tip. 2 points.

    ReplyDelete
  29. oh oh - my friend gets the points but the Black Sweden do the 'take a chance on me.. enter sandman'... are we right? am I wrong with go home production on 4

I'm off to see Emiliana Torrini.. so please finish this before I get back.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Shane now streaking ahead. Correct on The Black (Sweden) and on GHP. Will update all scores and songs once girls in bed.

    ReplyDelete
  31. With a maximum of 5 points left available, the scores are as follows:

    saneshane - 9 points
    AliMunday - 4½ points
    TonNL - 4 points
    saneshane's mate - 2½ points
    frogprincess - 2 points
    ejaydee - 2 points

Still enough points to play for to make a big difference, Spurs fans!!
    (Didn't you idiots practice penalties?!?!?)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, but I think we also "practiced" staying in the Premiership, and that doesn't seem to be working out very well..

    ReplyDelete
  33. so my gig was cancelled.. baaaa

I'm sure the Go home pro ..was called 'rock in black'

my dad says (he was bored of the football!) scott niblett - elizebeth... but he's a bit vague..and mumbling over the phone
and we are all stumped on Blacula.. I'm off to google cos it's doing my head in.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1 point for Rock In Black.
    Secures you the title!

    2 points for your dad.
The 'black' connection comes in the bracketed part of the song title, after Elizabeth.

So just the Blacula artist and Scout's parentheses to get ...

    ReplyDelete
  35. scout (I thought he said scott) not my spelling for once- (black hearted queen) and even googling can't get me Blacula.. but the references in the Simpsons has made me chuckle..

    night all.

(I'll do a where's Blimpy picture if he doesn't return soon.. I'm starting to worry)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Correct on Elizabeth's full title, and OK I figure you've earnt the last one:

The Crystalites' Blacula is on a fantastic double CD called Black Magic Reggae. I picked it up for a quid in the Woolies shutdown.

Goodnight my friend, thanks for playing, and my best wishes to the Canaries for a miraculous escape. Here's hoping you have league games against Newcastle next season!!
