Film samples in songs

This is from a 12" i've had for about 10 years and still ranks as my favourite coolest-film-samples-in-a-song track. But i've no idea what films they are from. Can anyone help identify them? (No Spill points i'm afraid as I don't know the answers myself!)

Samples are at the beginning and the very end, so you don't have to go through the ordeal of listening to the whole track, but those that like their music Digital and indeed Hardcore may enjoy it.

Bomb 20 - Made of Shit

And....what other tracks with film samples does anyone dig?

p.s. the photo has nothing to do with the track, but it is peak "sakura" (cherry blossom) season over here and the whole city seems to be in full bloom and is looking extremely beautiful. I took the photo just outside the flat on my mobile phone yesterday!

  1. Lovely blossom, Japanther - I once watched an elderly Japanese couple videoing the cherry blossom in Central Milton Keynes...while they were doing so two mounted policemen rode up (the horses were HUGE and the couple were TINY) and started to talk to them. Unfortunately it was one of those damn-I've-left-my-camera-at-home moments.

Can't get your track to play at the mo, but here's a very obscure example - on the Slosinger/Redbury concept album Cold War's Hot Water Shower is the shower scene from Charade with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Film clip here!

  3. Unknown Territory by Bomb The Bass is packed with dialogue from seventies shock-horror satire Death Race 2000.....great album actually.

  4. Loved the clip TFD, you just don't get that mischevious playfulness between characters these days, it either has to serious and "hard-hitting" or grossly-offensive-in-the-name-of-comedy, great stuff!

The annual cherry blossom viewing is close to a religious festival over here.....albeit one that involves sitting under a tree and drinking copious amounts of alcohol (rather than sitting in an armchair and getting plastered as our christian festival of "Christmas" demands!)

  5. I can't get this to play either..
but would like to add the various film references in
    Big Audio Dynamites E=mc2
titled from the Nicholas Roeg film Insignificance. Clips from that as well as other Nicholas Roeg stuff were used in the Don Letts video...if I remember rightly... no longer up on the tube BAH.

    samples performance doesn't it?

uses the line "pop star dyes his hair" already zedded so no worries on this weeks theme.

oh look it's right there in fourfoots RR spotify.
    cool.

  6. My favourite film sample album is one Saneshane knows well- Coldkrushcuts, a double album of Ninja Tunes remixes sewn into two long DJ mixes, one by DJ Krush and the other by Coldcut/DJ Food. Plenty of B film quotes alongside stuff like Dirty Harry. I think there was a GU blog on this theme recently.

  7. I can't get it to play either.

    Nice blossom though.

  10. The Avalanches Frontier Psychatrist has some funny film samples, and then there are several albums like Wu-Tang's Clan Enter the 36 Chambers, or Ghostface's Ironman.

  12. It might seem like the lazy way out, but I love that kind of resource.

  13. i love hearing Digital Hardcore stuff- their aesthetic was so well defined, I admire it. The samples at the start of the film were familiar, but no dice, or anywhere else in the song.

re the last minute of the tune - people think crystal castles are doing something new??!

  16. Maybe he didn't, Shoey, but that track made me want to go and do one!!

Sorry, Japanther, other than 3 front-of-song samples making me go "I know that ... or do I?" I drew a blank too. Could only stand 2mins or so of the tune before seeking blessed relief via the stop button. I went and put on some Motorhead to calm down.

    ;o)

  17. Actually, I liked the track, but didn't think the samples at the beginning or worked with it too well. Picky bunch us 'spillers aren't we?

  18. looks like we are none the wiser on the film front, but thanks for listening everyone, maybe it preserves the mystique of coolness by not knowing anyway....!

Blimpy- as mentioned before, I'm a big DH fan, and those early releases were untouchable and way ahead of their time.
I had the pleasure of seeing Atari Teenage Riot (at the self-same room above a pub that I saw Snow Patrol in) in Brighton, it was the second most scary gig i've been to, in terms of the singer-looking-like-he's-about-to-go-mental-and-beat-the-shit-out-of-everybody-in-the-room. First prize goes to the dearly departed Earl Brutus!

DsD - Motorhead to calm down! Love it! I spent a good half an hour or so just yesterday in the company of Motorhead/Girlschool. (on the record player of course!)

  19. Shoey, whilst you are there, any tips on how to get Dsd's Dakota Suite? I can't seem to download it, i'm not sure about these WMA files

  20. Oops! Sorry, Japanther. If I get a chance this morning, I'll take the WMAs out and replace with mp3s.

  21. Earl Brutus! Ah, I loved that band. England Sandwich is a great track packed with samples of various TV/cinematic moments but theres one thats bugged me..

I think its Bernard Bresslaw asking "Janet" if she's seen his cufflinks.

    But I aint sure.

And of course there's Kate Bush Hounds of Love with its excellent Night Of The Demon sample....This is a great film, by the way....

  22. I love the uncoolness of the Red Dwarf sample of Rimmer "You reach that age, 24, 25..." at the start of Surfing USM by Carter USM, which is still played as the opening song in live shows. Like "Shadows? On me lungs?", they use quite a lot from Alfie.

  23. Sorry Japanther, I meant to comment on the beautiful hanami picture too: my friend took her baby daughter to some valley last month that was full of plum blossoms, and the grey of the sky and the different shades of pink made me so nostalgic for Japan. Campai!

  24. JP Download AOTW tracks into a new folder on your PC. Go to file/import folder on i-Tunes & Steve Jobs will take care of those pesky WMA files for you.

  25. There's also various transcoders. I like MediaCoder because although its got a few more settings than average users want, it doesn't seem to get befuddled by DRM conflicts. And its free. There's easier ones, but each has something it won't do.
