This is from a 12" i've had for about 10 years and still ranks as my favourite coolest-film-samples-in-a-song track. But i've no idea what films they are from. Can anyone help identify them? (No Spill points i'm afraid as I don't know the answers myself!)
Samples are at the beginning and the very end, so you don't have to go through the ordeal of listening to the whole track, but those that like their music Digital and indeed Hardcore may enjoy it.

p.s. the photo has nothing to do with the track, but it is peak "sakura" (cherry blossom) season over here and the whole city seems to be in full bloom and is looking extremely beautiful. I took the photo just outside the flat on my mobile phone yesterday！
Lovely blossom, Japanther - I once watched an elderly Japanese couple videoing the cherry blossom in Central Milton Keynes...while they were doing so two mounted policemen rode up (the horses were HUGE and the couple were TINY) and started to talk to them. Unfortunately it was one of those damn-I've-left-my-camera-at-home moments.

Unknown Territory by Bomb The Bass is packed with dialogue from seventies shock-horror satire Death Race 2000.....great album actually.
ReplyDeleteLoved the clip TFD, you just don't get that mischevious playfulness between characters these days, it either has to serious and "hard-hitting" or grossly-offensive-in-the-name-of-comedy, great stuff!
ReplyDeleteThe annual cherry blossom viewing is close to a religious festival over here.....albeit one that involves sitting under a tree and drinking copious amounts of alcohol (rather than sitting in an armchair and getting plastered as our christian festival of "Christmas" demands!)

titled from the Nicholas Roeg film Insignificance. Clips from that as well as other Nicholas Roeg stuff were used in the Don Letts video...if I remember rightly... no longer up on the tube BAH.

My favourite film sample album is one Saneshane knows well- Coldkrushcuts, a double album of Ninja Tunes remixes sewn into two long DJ mixes, one by DJ Krush and the other by Coldcut/DJ Food. Plenty of B film quotes alongside stuff like Dirty Harry. I think there was a GU blog on this theme recently.

The Avalanches Frontier Psychatrist has some funny film samples, and then there are several albums like Wu-Tang's Clan Enter the 36 Chambers, or Ghostface's Ironman.

ReplyDeleteSorry, Japanther, other than 3 front-of-song samples making me go "I know that ... or do I?" I drew a blank too. Could only stand 2mins or so of the tune before seeking blessed relief via the stop button. I went and put on some Motorhead to calm down.

ReplyDeleteBlimpy- as mentioned before, I'm a big DH fan, and those early releases were untouchable and way ahead of their time.
I had the pleasure of seeing Atari Teenage Riot (at the self-same room above a pub that I saw Snow Patrol in) in Brighton, it was the second most scary gig i've been to, in terms of the singer-looking-like-he's-about-to-go-mental-and-beat-the-shit-out-of-everybody-in-the-room. First prize goes to the dearly departed Earl Brutus!
DsD - Motorhead to calm down! Love it! I spent a good half an hour or so just yesterday in the company of Motorhead/Girlschool. (on the record player of course!)

I love the uncoolness of the Red Dwarf sample of Rimmer "You reach that age, 24, 25..." at the start of Surfing USM by Carter USM, which is still played as the opening song in live shows. Like "Shadows? On me lungs?", they use quite a lot from Alfie.

ReplyDeleteJP Download AOTW tracks into a new folder on your PC. Go to file/import folder on i-Tunes & Steve Jobs will take care of those pesky WMA files for you.
ReplyDeleteThere's also various transcoders. I like MediaCoder because although its got a few more settings than average users want, it doesn't seem to get befuddled by DRM conflicts. And its free. There's easier ones, but each has something it won't do.
