I didn't know what to expect (after work, tired, few glasses of wine, just trying to sneak some listening in before the mad dash to boys in bed), and the song and video just killed me. Do you know anything else about her? The name seems so familiar. Just watching it again. Beautiful.

Love the music; much more interesting than I would have expected (from my admittedly limited listening). I find it hard to relate to the vocal, though: I'm not keen on talk-sing and I'm very fed up with the accent, thanks to Lily Allen & co. But, yes, lovely sounds.

You really ought to put up a post with flashing lights and a "nilpferd might like this" tag next time. LARGE TYPE or at least CAPITAL LETTERS would help.
Steen, I felt the same watching the video- it's incredibly warm and affecting. The selector sessions version is an interesting contrast, perhaps even more intimate, although I do like the oboe and sax in the release version. Read about Speech Debelle here.
Really enjoyed the Tony Allen, EJ, I only had two tracks of his until now. Interesting how important the bass and guitar/rhodes is to his sound- gives it a relaxed, loping feeling compared to Fela's "hotter" sound- a bit like comparing the e-bass heavy early electric era Miles (Allen) to his earlier, sixties, horn focused bands (Fela).
OK, I'll wait. You have ONE hour! Re your iphone/itunes/music/capacity issue, I don't know if your fancy iphone works like my rickety ipod, but you know that screen when your phone shows in itunes, there might be a music tab, along with movies photos, etc. There you should be able to choose which playlists are synced with your phone. All you need now is to make a special 'Spill playlist in itunes.
I think Tony Allen's music with his own band is more about the groove, he is creating a particular sound, so I think of In a silent way or Ghetto Walk, On the corner, or Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. Fela's music was messier and complex, here I think more of Miles' abstract quintet in the sixties, still driven by the pulse, obviously, but with other elements of call and response, tension and release, and more message driven.
EJD and Steen, plus anyone else interested, I just added my two Tony Allen tracks- actually three, but No discrimination is already there- to dropbox.. Never Expect Power Always, and Road Close, both from the 1984 N.E.P.A. EP.
I do have Lagos Shake: A Tony Allen Chop Up with Diplo/ Bonde do Role / and another 9 doing mixes.. but my computer isn't working properly.. so steen will have to leave the lights off.
Doesn't a South African fireworks show start off black, go white for 50 years, then go black again?
