Pick your poison

..... or let shuffle do it for you.

Come on, no cheating - iPods/media players on shuffle, hit play .... What came up first and what do you score it ?/10?

(Feel free to tell us a bit about it if you like)

  2. Do You Like Boys? By Freezepop. Very silly retro synth-pop. Excellent.

  3. Graveyard 3:12 Jeffrey Lewis It's the Ones Who've Cracked That the Light Shines Through Anti-Folk

Um, it's an album track that I don't really know much about, not one of his more memorable songs I guess...

  4. Bevis Frond Flood Warning

A short, jangly chugger from 2004's 'Hit Squad' featuring one of Nick Saloman's fluid guitar solos where the middle eight might be. I like Nick's downbeat, verging on lugubrious vocals.

  5. And at this time in the morning it's a 7

  6. Dream Warriors, I've lost my ignorance [and don't know where to find it], feat. Gangstarr. Which I coincidentally added to Hip hop 101 on Monday.
Probably the first hip-hop track I ever heard, in 1992, from the Rebirth of cool Vol. 1 compilation.
I'd rate it a 9- clever lyric, superbly laid back groove.

  9. Oh God I knew it would do this. 'Save Me a Saturday Night' - Neil Diamond off 12 Songs. I'm not going to dig a deeper pit by trying to explain this. It's very romantic though.
    Hell, yeah. That'a a 7.

  10. Phew! That was a close one, but happily, it's

    Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun

    9/10 at least.

  11. OK, I'll spill ... the next song on the shuffle is Brian Setzer Orchestra's The Man With The Bag!

Actually would rate an 8 if it popped up on a late December evening, but on a clear September office morning, I'll avoid rating it.

But the v9.0 upgrade has just shut iTunes down to re-boot itself, so I might have another submission for this thread in a few minutes ...

  12. Nice, it's a 5-starrer, Bebete Vãobora by Jorge Ben. 9/10

  13. The Moments and The Whatnauts - Girls.
"I'd like to be on an island
with five or six of them fine ones."
This couldn't be more 70s if it was sold by Findus and boiled in a bag. Glorious - 8/10.

  14. Great Lake Swimmers - Pulling on a line
7/10, nice folky sing-alongy bit of Americana, but they have much better songs....

  15. oh good game!

"Trouble's Braids" by Tom Waits off of "Swordfishtrombone" which Steenbeck very kindly put in Dropbox for me a while back after I enquired about the great man.

Well, it's a very short, weird clanking tune and not really a complete "song", but i'll give it 7/10 anyway

  16. Just a Dream - Big Bill Broonzy from Pre Wars Blues Story compilation. Nice piano. 8/10

  17. Bobby Bland, Ain't No Lone in the Heart of the City. Fantastic song; certainly 9/10.

  19. Depeche Mode's Here Is The House, from Black Celbration. I'm definately having a bit of a Mode time at the mo, 9/10.

  20. Your Acting's Like The End Of The World (sic) - The Drones, the last song in their last record. Just a tad less somber than your usual Drones' song. 9/10. A joy throughout, but the raucous ending is really uplifting, not a word I'd thought I'd ever use to describe them (It's a small capacity iPod, mind you, so I tend to give some previous thought to what I'm putting up there... The result of repeating the experience with the stuff in my hard drives would would be a lot more random)

  21. Richard Thompson - The poor ditching boy
    10/10, classic RT.....

  22. Maccabees - Young Lions

    6. 2 pt deduction for ripping off Arcade Fire.

  23. Ha!

    iTunes 9 installed and re-started, and ...

Deep Purple - No-one Came, courtesy of a gordonimmel RR Social CD, so ask him for a mark out of ten.

  24. The Cruel Brother, by Five Hand Reel. I recommended this for Cruel Songs...but instead my Shirley Collins recommendation, The Cruel Mother, got listed. I was glad I hadn't pointed out that the cruel mother would probably not be considered cruel today...OK, infanticide, but clearly while the balance of her mind was disturbed. Whereas the cruel brother...he murders his sister because her boyfriend forgets to say hallo to him. Go figure.

  25. Herbaliser 'the sensual woman'

pure filth - shouldn't be allowed on my pod - 10 outta 10.

iTunes DJ gives me this selection
1 'Sew Wet Seams' Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra
2 'In One Ear & Out The Other' Fujiya & Miyagi
    3 'Saturn' Suckle
4 'Darling, You're Mean' The Duke Spirit
5 'The Italian Job : It's Caper Time' Quincy Jones
    6 'Come To Me' Björk
7 'Build A Church With Your Fear' Animals On Wheels
8 'New Years Eve' The Walkmen
    9 'Vaseline' Elastica
10 'We Are Past Our Dancing Days'Ballboy
    11 'St. Pest' Pest

to make a fairly cracking 12.
(to think my RR successes make me known for 'I want a dog' a pet shop boys b-side and '99 Luftballons'! the internet is a weird beast)

  26. After every party I die by IAMX, I'll give it 8/10, I love the melodrama and the darkness.

@TracyK, I love that song, one of my favourite Depeche Mode albums (apart from New Dress which I think is horrible) :-)

  27. @Tin - I up-loaded the version that came up for me of the sensual woman, into the box.. like the version you put in.. some extended scratching in the sessions version... lovely stuff.

-that was a great use of english.. more vodka needed!

  28. By a strange coincidence, my roulette wheel came up with Big Bill Broonzy too - Black Cat Rag. Nice guitar, bouncy, lilting tune, lots of calling out "Play it boy", "Everybody have a ball" etc. 5/10

  29. I started this at 3 a.m. when I couldn't sleep, and as often happens with late night/early morning ideas, I hadn't thought it through fully.

I have an 80gig iPod, so i load it up with all sorts. Most of it is crap. (There's playlists for the kids and for Mrs Tin. There's also stuff waiting to be heard from whatever blog and kept or discarded. In all, the chances of hitting random and coming up with something embarassing is probably at least 50-50.) Coulda been Take That. Coulda been Pixie Lott. I think I dodged a bullet, really.)

Perhaps next time we do this the ?/10 rating should be an embarassment rating.

  30. Up with people - Lambchop 20/10
    I drink - Mary Gautheir 22/10
Dancing on the ceiling - Sinatra
Love is - American Music Club
No Blue Skies - Lloyd Cole
    Doomed - Ron Sexsmith
In the wee small hours of the morning - Sinatra
A foggy day in London Town - Billie Holiday
    Growing closer - Humble Pie
    Lilac Wine - Jeff Buckley

An atypical list from my iPod.

Interesting experience indeed to record what my lovely little purple friend churns out

  31. >Enchanted by ... who else? Prefab Sprout! I'll give it 8/10. It's from the album From Langley Park To Memphis although iTunes picked it from the compilation album 38 Carat Collection.

Actually the odds of my iTunes throwing up a Prefab Sprout track at random are not as long as you might think. 252 Sprout tracks out of 12144 on the iPod means that there's approximately 1:50 chance of this outcome.

The next track was a 10/10 for me - It May Be A Beautiful Sky Tonight But It's Only A Shelter For A World At Risk by Scottish popsters Win. One for your Aye tunes, blimpy?

Then came Robbie Williams and there this report ends ...

  32. Thee Headcoats - When you stop loving me
    8/10
Billy Childish doing his usual stuff

  33. The first one up was half way through "Is It The Sea?" (Bonnie Prince Billy and Alex Neilson)and it''s 9/10 so I went back to the beginning.

Followed by two tracks from Liars:
First the amazingly titled "Tumbling Walls Buried Me In The Debris With ESG" 10/10
then a live version of "We Fenced Other Gardens With The Bones Of Our Own" (live version) 9/10

A quiet interlude of Nina Nastasia "Jimmy's Rose Tattoo 8/10 followed by yet another Liars track "Drum and the Uncomfortable Can" 10/10

i can't account for the preponderance of Liars. I know I have a couple of albums on the iPod but they are by no means the most represented artists there.

It is a nano so there is a certain amount of pre-selection involved. I do clean stuff off it fairly regularly to make room for new songs and podcasts but none of those came up. It would probably be very different if I'd used shuffle on the hard disc. Oddly though, I almost never use shuffle at home, only out travelling with the iPod.

  34. Torch Song - Raphael
    9/10
    ...nice, trippy, dubby night music....

I've got an iPod Classic 120GB, currently filled with 20986 songs (85.8 GB), about 99% of them uploaded from my cd collection, the rest from various, mostly legal sources on the www....

  35. Book of Saturday, King Crimson 9/10. More a late night song than an early morning one, though.

  36. Can we enter Day Two of the Shuffle Amnesty? If so, my embarrassment level is zero because the track was Waterfalls by TLC - 10/10.

  40. @ May1366 - it doesn't get much better than that!

    @ TonNL - there's a distinctly Sprouty feeling in the air ...

  41. Tincanman, I loove that Girlyman / George Harrison track.

I just put 'Book of Saturday' on Dropbox and realized you'd already done it? Thank you. It reminds me of listening to Radio Caroline late at night in bed on my old transistor-that-my-dad-bought-me-to-stop-me-whistling. They used to play "Exiles" as well, which follows it on the album. Songs of my youth ...
