  1. 4 is Screaming Blue Messiahs - Let's Go Down To The Woods.
Last on is The Very Things - The Bushes Scream While My Daddy Prunes (and the only reason I know this at all is it was nommed for a topic this summer)

  2. Clueless on 1.

I'm really going to kick myself when someone gets to 2. before me. It's Liverpudlian, but it's not Wah!, not Bunnymen, not Icicle Works.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Ha! 3. IS The Icicle Works! From A Whisper To A Scream.

    ReplyDelete
  4. 6. is undoubtedly Siouxsie, but was Mad-Eyed Screamer with The Banshees or as The Creatures? DarceysMam would know, but she's out. I can't remember, won't cheat, will guess at The Creatures for the lack of stringed instruments.

  5. Don't know 7.

DO know 8. It'll come to me ...

    ReplyDelete
  6. ... or maybe it won't! Add it to the 'Come Back To' pile with 2.

Don't know 9. but all I can think of now I've heard it is how much it resembles Bobby 'Boris' Pickett's comedy hit Monster Mash

  7. 10. Haven't got a clue, and quite frankly don't care.

  8. 5. The hugely underrated Hunters and Collectors. (Scream Who). Hey, shoey have you got 'Jaws of Life'?

    ReplyDelete
  9. 2 is a really good song but no idea. C'mon DsD, I know it's in there somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  10. PS, DsD, if that was the last question on 'Millionaire' I'd risk The Creatures. Don't know song but it's got to be.

  11. I know 7,and pretty sure about 11 (especially as it's shoey, but it's bad form to do too many. I love 9. Sounds very Swell Maps meets Psychobilly,. Must check out the Very Things then...

    ReplyDelete
  12. PS - To make sure I get my Spill point, and not lose out on a JimmySavile-style technicality, The Icicle Works song title is actually Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream).

    Still can't place 2. or 8.

  13. 7 is Primal Scream, 'Exterminator' (or is 'Xtrmntr'?)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I was fairly sure it wasn't Pete Wylie singing on 2., but I keep coming back to him ...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lots of good stuff on there - only recognised number 6 and without cravenly googling it I'd go for Siouxie and Budgie as The Creatures...

Liking number 11. Who's that then?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Have worked out 2. but with some internet help, so won't claim the (rest of the) points, just a half for Pete Wylie's vocal.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hang on - tincanman said The Very Things' The Bushes Scream While My Daddy Prunes was lst on. It isn't, is it?

In which case, let's have a listen to 11.

    .
Hmmm, don't know it, but I'd guess at China Crisis?

  18. *SIGH!* I meant to type "last on", obviously. My left pinkie sometimes doesn't hit the A hard enough.

    :o{

  19. Nice work 'Spill collective. Just 1, 8, 10 & 11 to go I reckon. Shane should grab 1, 8 are Yanks, 10 is very obscure, 11 are a former AOTW band.

#2. Was the indeed the very 1st Wah! single (or Wah! Heat as they were back in '79).

  20. Grasping at straws now:

If 8. is American, is it being sung by a VERY young Mark Lanegan? There's something about the vocal phrasing on the bit just before the solo that's hinting at me.

Strange thing is, I'm sure I know it, but if it is ML / Screaming Trees, I don't have it, because it sure ain't on Dust (the only ST album I own).

I'm kinda talking myself into this guess - off to play The Winding Sheet from 1989 to see if that helps ...

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1 isn't the video version of Thriller by any chance?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nah. Withdraw that Mark Lanegan guess - even twenty years ago his voice was far deeper than this #8.

    Dunno then.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yep, it is Screaming Trees from the Uncle album.

    Same era as Thriller, Mnemonic.

Proudfoot, I used to have all the early UK H&C albums, the US & Aussie versions seem to be different though.

  24. This is the most enjoyable quiz I've encountered on my occasional rambles through The 'Spill. Ta, shoey.

I only knew the ones that everybody else knows, although I do claim Brownie points for having bought Inevitable snigle INEV 001 within a few days of first hearing Peel play it back in 1979/80. #10 is Henry Crun and Eccles on laughing gravy, no?

To make it up to a dozen, add this very strangest of pieces: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OPzPoSxha8 . Although never released *legally*, I bought this track at a Virgin Megastore back in the early 1990s. But we'll keep that story for the long winter evenings.

  25. Shiv, #10 could very well contain a Goons sample, but it's actually People Like Us. Thanks for kind words & the linky.

2 left, unless Anonymous nailed all 11.

  26. 1 Yello - for some reason I think 'Desire' but that can't be right

11 A.C.R a certain scream ratio a.. put in correct order and slap bass

no ultra vivid scene/cure/ Daniel Johnston or death cab covering him... oh that's my quiz.

cool list coulda given you the creature straight off...

I'm going to kick myself with the yello title.

    ReplyDelete
  27. & that about wraps things up. Right Yello album Shane & as it's instrumental it doesn't really matter what it's called - has good screamage & that's what counts.

Off to OD on a night of Scot's Indie. 'Spill points have been allocated & deposited in numbered Swiss accounts. Thanks to all for playing.

  28. A Scots Indie & Quiz Fan who isn't Blimpy McFlahSeptember 30, 2009 at 12:11 AM

fuck, i've missed it all - any chance of some scots indie instead?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Blimpy where's your Scottish A-Z? Then you can have all the Scots Indie you like.

  30. Seem to remember a promise of a full alphabet of Scottish of Scottish indie?

    Gig review:

    Jet Packs - very good
Twilight Sad - moments of brilliance
    Frightened Rabbit - amazing

& all for the price of a happy meal. Feeling a little fragile this morning.

  31. PF - Great minds think alike, although some are able to form better sentences without bonus words.
