Shoey's Album Of The Month - Sept.

Real smorgasbord of stuff on offer lately. Already covered some great new stuff on the magnificent 'Spill: new old sprouts, pink, folk monsters, swim birds, twilight sad, xx and that skinny chick with the boy's name. Here's a few more for consideration - one of them must be declared Shoey's album of the month (please, please let it not be a tie again, please):

  1. You said it, Debby! NC's gone all Clint Mansell on us; it's gorgeous.

Darcey says #2 is "too scary". Hang on, I've just got to put a DVD on for her instead ...

  2. How many votes am I allowed, Shoey?

Mew are only a short head behind Cave/Ellis.

The others are mere also-rans, even Muse.

  3. Hey, I think I met Warren Ellis, but I didn't know who he is.

  4. DsD Just 1 vote for your fave, I think - don't have the math skills for any EEC stylee proportional representation.

Apols to Darcey - Uncle Shoey is very sorry.

  5. I'll go with Nº 1 myself too. Beautiful stuff. I quite like 4, 5 and 6 though, (specially 4).
Btw, since DarceysDad is mentioning Clint Mansell, I never got to thank him for that!. I haven't heard of him until I've read Dsd's praise of "Death is the Road to Awe", from "The Fountain" OST somewhere else. Brilliant piece of music, that...

  6. The podium is made up of 1,2 and 5.I'm going to give it to scary number 2 (maybe that raises our hit rate among the 9-19 demographic, or alternatively, 28 year old immature boys)

  7. 5. Read the comments, and protect your eyes.

  8. I'm obviously pitching a snowball at a chocolate fireguard in hell here... but I found number 3 the most interesting. There's a slight whimsical tone to the lead singer's voice that could make me hate it all after a while, but there are plenty of other textures to explore.

  10. Shoey, I listened to them all, but none of them grabbed me. I'm sorry. I liked a lot of them a bit, but there was something that just didn't work for me in each. I feel bad telling you this terrible news, but I felt worse having you think I didn't take the time to listen.

Now off to see about that guided tour.

  11. Steen, I'm devastated, why couldn't you have kept that to yourself?;)

  12. Chris,

No.3 is Mew. What would you say to our lobbying Mr. Shoegazer to convert to the Baha'i faith, so that he can have 19 Albums Of The Month in a year? We'll have Cave/Ellis in Mashiyyat, and in a fortnight's time, he can put up the Mew album in Ilm.

    Sounds good to me ...

    ;o)

  13. Darceys comment (about Nosaj thing #2) is funny.. had the unthanks on earlier and zane said, why are you playing funeral music?

when I was a student- that's just what my friends said about my taste- nothing changes - the critics just get younger.

that album (nosaj thing) gets under your skin, but takes a while- .. thanks for that.

my vote is Yatch #5 - limited musical ability - hardly a tune - is that a song? - bl;oody love it - for the next five minutes anyway (and would annoy the (somethings) off that person that doesn't like hip hop (from tinnys thread- about RR)

    is the album any good?

(1 is beautiful and 3 I too enjoyed)

pissed jeans did me head in today..

not jump up and down greats .. but would like to listen to the whole albums to judge properly.

split final vote on 1 and 5... and 2 as it's the only one I can vote for as a good album as a whole..

  14. I knew it would be a bitter pill to swallow, so I waited till happy hour so you could at least try to numb the pain.

Why does everybody else know the bands?

    ReplyDelete
  15. The theme is up, it's rain, I call dibs, on I Can't Stand The Rain, It Rains On Me, Purple Rain, Buckets Of Rain, in fact I call dibs on everything. Or nothing. It's too big and good a subject.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Fastest finger first on Purple Rain, ejay. It's already written into my Word Doc prep!!

Winner has to buy the first round at the Oct Social as penance?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Where the heck did you see it? I did a whole rain post on the spill remember? This is my fucking theme!! Ejay, do you want ANn Peebles, cause if not, I do. BUt I really really really want GO Ahead in the rain. I really really do. Really

    ReplyDelete
  18. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/series/readersrecommend

I want them ALL, but you can have Go Ahead In The Rain (but I'd take a look at the lyrics if I were you)

    ReplyDelete
  19. And now I took a look at the lyrics and it does fit. Drat!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh I really really also want DIdn't It Rain - Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

    ReplyDelete
  21. In the A-Z we have Dry The Rain by Beta Band, Missy Elliott's Supa Dupa FLy, The Ronettes' Walking In The Rain and others.

    ReplyDelete
  22. my first ever RR compilation was Autumn songs --- 3 weeks into starting...

I guess DsD ansd EjD are joking - it being Rain.. still takes too much for me to log in at the moment to RR.

    Steen
I alway believed that my first ever nom that got in was Yo la tengo 'Autumn Sweater'
then the marconium proved it wasn't me 1st.
    a long held belief shattered.

we should do a rain selection again...

    night all.. enjoy the MNFF

  23. I hate when they post the theme early, especially if it's something I've done an entire playlist on, because--I have a list, I love the theme, I feel extra anxious.

I want also I think it's going to Rain today, lots of Tom Waits, Rainy Day Dream Away, Rainy Dayz, THe Sky is Crying...

Congratulations on Juicy, Ejay - that was you, right? I'm glad it's in the list.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yep that was me, I'm quite relieved it's in, but I had a good feeling on that one. "It was all a dream" I'm happy it's in though.
I'm going for DUsty Springfield's version of I Think It's Gonna Rain, and basically we'll have to see who'll be posting these songs first, pre-donds/noms to all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Can someone put up Raindrops for me twice? One for Tindersticks & the other for Mr Perry. Won't be able to get there for a while as I'm still sobbing into my beer - hope you're pleased with yourself Steen!

  26. I have such a love/hate relationship with caring about a topic.

    ReplyDelete
  27. RR veterans will know that often, when a topic is known in advance, we don't see it until the next morning.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I KNOW! And I'm seriously anxious thinking about that. How silly is that?

    ReplyDelete
  29. This is what our lives have come to. Come on guys, let's all go to bed....

    hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  30. Okay - you go first. No...you. You go first.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Here's a guided tour for you - FUCK OFF!

    Let's try Nilpferds rename trick,

    ReplyDelete
  32. back to the topic of the post....

i'm seriously excited about the new Lightning Bolt album...the two tracks i've now heard are sounding ace.

And I was an early supporter of Pissed Jeans, I bought their debut 7" and loved the first album (although it was let down by crappy production), the second album was slicker but didn't have enough tunes, let's hope that with the third they get the balance of the two. Do you know if it's out yet, Shoey?

    ReplyDelete
  33. JP: The new Jeans is out over here & think it has the balance you are hoping for. Also looking forward to the new Bolt, but not sure if it's out yet or not.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Shane, think you'll love the whole YACHT - it has Summer Song from the Bestival comp & lot's of other goodies.

Not sure if it was Nilp's trick or the swearing that did it, but the last Anonymous post has vanished. Or was it all a dream....

    ReplyDelete
  35. Seems that Warren & Nick have a slight edge over YACHT at this point - will leave the poll open for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Excuse me, were we voting here? I vote 1

    ReplyDelete
  37. shoey
now the post has been removed.. you do seam to be swearing at steen and ejd...!

think I will like the Yacht
    wish list up-dated...

    now Rain
    really they weren't joking

and one of my youthful first singles ever, fits the bill and the band only made a doudle a-side single in their entire career.
a post punk classic in my mind (or... my very own toffeeboy moment)

lets see I may have to struggle onto RR to nom it.

  38. 1 is gorgeous but 3 is also fab. ^ is making my ears bleed, which I don't want today, ta.
