I've found Mark68's post with the solos list (see below). It does look rather like a 'safe bet' list to me. No RT and Dark Star included when I went to great pains to point out that what makes that track remarkable is that it is a collaboration rather than a collection of solos. Anyway, back to the bottom of the space barrel...

In the couple of hours since I was given the heads-up about that solo A-list, I have not calmed down about it at all.
You know that I have previously commented on more than one occasion about how much I like PaulMac's style etc.? Well on this list specifically, I think the bare bones Ten, without seeing his column, misses the boat SS-S-SO-OOOO badly it doesn't even register on the passenger list!
I dunno, maybe it's because I felt so passionately about the topic itself; maybe it's because I didn't get as much time to comment as I'd have liked ...
This honestly isn't about making the A-list - if Marconius is a bit slack with his reading, he might even (mis)credit me with the hateful Beat It - this is, or bloody well should have been, about the solos.
Donds for the comments above about the Dead & Hendrix; the same logic applies to Stevie Wonder on I Feel For You. I can't comment on Coltrane or Ellington, and I actually would have included Like A Hurricane, BUT what on earth is the question that New Year's Day or f**kin' Beat It are the best answers to?!?!?!?!
I doubt I'll be able to control myself even once I've read the column, so don't expect me on RR tonight: I don't want to shit on my own doorstep . . .
Can't decide if all this premature listing has spoilt the RR fun for this week? Last time this happened was Colours week, when there were plenty of tunes to go round. Given the JAPlike length of some of these lists, suspect that all the low hanging fruit will be gobbled up in a few minutes after the blog post. Perhaps we should have a pig as our mascot? Nothing to be done now that the secret is out, but anticipate a lot of moaning from many of the regulars.
Still have a few up my sleeve, though. & there's always Halloween tunes.
Dsd- why can't you comment on Giant Steps or Sophisticated Lady? If it's because you haven't heard them, both are on Spotify.. though I'm not sure which of the versions of Sophisticated Lady Paul meant. There's only one Giant Steps, though- on the album of the same name. I do seem to remember you at some stage last weekend asking for a dropbox full of jazz... I've got no beef with either Beat it, which I donded, nor with New Year's Day, though U2-wise I'd rather have gone with With Or Without You if anyone had mentioned it. It's not axetrickery as such, but I like Edge's guitar work, in a minimalist kind of way. U2 is another band whose albums I never repurchased post-emigration, but I still like them up until Zoo.
Well, I'm not going to worry about RR this week but have Dropboxed Nick Drake (Pink Moon); Billie Holiday (I Wished on the Moon); Pete Atkin (Be Careful When They Offer You The Moon); Rory Gallagher (Blue Moon of Kentucky) and John Renbourn (The Moon Shines Bright),which is an instrumental and sounds like "Old King Cole" to me. I've only got the Neville Bros on vinyl but someone else may oblige.
Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate have a superb album called "In the Heart of the Moon" which I would be happy to dropbox as album of the week some time when we have enough space. It's beautiful.
As I've already texted to Dsd, I like Jimi and Neil in there, I DO like U2, New years Day has a piano/guitar solo which 'makes' the song even if it isn't up to Blackmore's standard (and sometimes get a bit annoyed about the automatic denunciation of U2 around here, just because Bono is a bit of a pretentious twot - so what!? - they do make some good songs between them. There's 20 years worth of stuff to choose from, you know) And there's only two Michael Jackson tracks I like and one of them is 'Beat It' - mainly because of the solo.
Anyway, there's an obvious DP track to nom tomorrow (I'm defo not staying up). I hope I'm first with it but,since it won't be chosen anyway, it doesn't matter.
Have to issue very belated megadonds for May's Jimmy Smith pick Walk on the wild side.. that's a fantastic Oliver Nelson band and chart behind him, I didn't see the nom on RR, just caught up with it now. It's a great track and an awesome solo.
And come on people, so what if RR is up early or you don't like last week's A-list.. there are so many noses out of joint already, both here and on the mothership.. get it sorted, have some fun...

I have to disagree, gordonimmel. I haven't liked anything U2 have released since Rattle and Hum and some of that album is rubbish.
The only entirely decent album they did was The Unforgettable Fire and that came after some dreadful second-rate Simple Minds style rabble rousing on the earlier albums.
!!! - "Must Be The Moon" is the most obvious moon song I can think of.
As you lot still insist on clinging to that archaic daylight savings time and the clocks have gone back over there, i'm going to miss my only chance (the first few pages) to get onto RR this week....anyone is welcome to the above nomination!
And @Carole Bristol, you've picked up on what my comment was about. I don't think much of their stuff since 'Rattle Yer Bum' either, but there is an awful lot of their work to pick and choose from.....

Um, it's not the list I would have made myself either... but then, isn't it always like this? With lyrics-based topics, you get something "objective" to focus on, so those are somewhat more agreeable. But solos are all about subjectivity. For instance, some people hate solos full stop. For the life of me, I don't get how that can be possible, but that's the way it is. This is a good week to make a list with two hundred good songs on it. It's a terrible list to make an A-list two of us can agree on, though, (let alone more people). That's the way I see it, at least...

Sigh. It seems cruel to put the subject up 5 hours early, and then not put the blog up till who-knows-when. It's like the other night, when Isaac woke me up in the middle of the night for a cuddle, and then I looked at the clock by his bed and thought, ah...2am, plenty of time to sleep. But they'd played with the clock and it was actually 7 am, but it's dark this time of year and we all had to get up in the cold and dark. Just cruel.
Hmmm, "Pig" was a little strong, although a little editing or restraint or editing would go a long way, people. I'm not pointing out tfd or toffee who's taste is more (respectfully) on the margins. I am calling out Magicman, EJ (apart from the more obscure "world music" stuff that we wouldn't hear without your introduction. Thank you.) and Ladysteen. Agree with Nilpferd that the Hippo way should be followed, but also think that our community should be self-policing, and that we should raise issues as & when they occur. Am worried that we are heading for: "I would like to recommend the following 350 songs".
Can understand DsD & Carole's frustration & agree that the trad rock community got the short-end this week. Can't argue with the jazz picks & was pleased to see Vini in the A-list.
Carole: buking over U2 or Simple Minds does nothing to help your cause. Despite periods of turgidity, some of us fond of them. No hard feelings, though.
Can't say I'm too keen on the A-List or the B-List - but then I wasn't too keen on the whole darn theme. Disappointed that The Great Gig In The Sky didn't make it (it would have been nice to see at least one example of thinking outside the box) but not really too surprised. Very disappointed that not one Jan Akkerman/Focus track made it to either list.
For those of you who care, all but two of the final ten were nominated within 15 hours of the blog being published. The three 'new' artists: Jimmy Smith, Chaka Khan and Durrutti Column are hardly cutting edge ...

His phrase 'tapestry of solos' is actually one I rather like, as the individual instruments do weave together to create a picture. To also learn that Sister Ray is one of his favourite tracks of all time shifted my view of him some more. Didn't he say he was a hip-hop man?

Not Jimi's best solo, not Neil Young's either and I agree 100% with Chris that Dark Star is not about the solos.
DS is all about the interplay.
I hate Wacko Jacko with a deep abiding passion too and I can't stand Eddie Van Halen as a guitarist - no emotion at all.

Well on this list specifically, I think the bare bones Ten, without seeing his column, misses the boat SS-S-SO-OOOO badly it doesn't even register on the passenger list!
I dunno, maybe it's because I felt so passionately about the topic itself; maybe it's because I didn't get as much time to comment as I'd have liked ...
This honestly isn't about making the A-list - if Marconius is a bit slack with his reading, he might even (mis)credit me with the hateful Beat It - this is, or bloody well should have been, about the solos.
Donds for the comments above about the Dead & Hendrix; the same logic applies to Stevie Wonder on I Feel For You. I can't comment on Coltrane or Ellington, and I actually would have included Like A Hurricane, BUT what on earth is the question that New Year's Day or f**kin' Beat It are the best answers to?!?!?!?!
I doubt I'll be able to control myself even once I've read the column, so don't expect me on RR tonight: I don't want to shit on my own doorstep . . .

The Edge may well have his attractions as a player for some people but as a soloist? Nah!
Can't decide if all this premature listing has spoilt the RR fun for this week? Last time this happened was Colours week, when there were plenty of tunes to go round. Given the JAPlike length of some of these lists, suspect that all the low hanging fruit will be gobbled up in a few minutes after the blog post. Perhaps we should have a pig as our mascot? Nothing to be done now that the secret is out, but anticipate a lot of moaning from many of the regulars.

Dsd- why can't you comment on Giant Steps or Sophisticated Lady? If it's because you haven't heard them, both are on Spotify.. though I'm not sure which of the versions of Sophisticated Lady Paul meant. There's only one Giant Steps, though- on the album of the same name. I do seem to remember you at some stage last weekend asking for a dropbox full of jazz...
ReplyDeleteI've got no beef with either Beat it, which I donded, nor with New Year's Day, though U2-wise I'd rather have gone with With Or Without You if anyone had mentioned it. It's not axetrickery as such, but I like Edge's guitar work, in a minimalist kind of way. U2 is another band whose albums I never repurchased post-emigration, but I still like them up until Zoo.
Well, I'm not going to worry about RR this week but have Dropboxed Nick Drake (Pink Moon); Billie Holiday (I Wished on the Moon); Pete Atkin (Be Careful When They Offer You The Moon); Rory Gallagher (Blue Moon of Kentucky) and John Renbourn (The Moon Shines Bright),which is an instrumental and sounds like "Old King Cole" to me. I've only got the Neville Bros on vinyl but someone else may oblige.

ReplyDeleteI have to disagree, gordonimmel. I haven't liked anything U2 have released since Rattle and Hum and some of that album is rubbish.
The only entirely decent album they did was The Unforgettable Fire and that came after some dreadful second-rate Simple Minds style rabble rousing on the earlier albums.
As you can tell, I don't care for them much.
!!! - "Must Be The Moon" is the most obvious moon song I can think of.

The list is LAZY, that's the problem. I have never criticised a list before but this one is just lame, unadventurous and pretty uninspiring and, yes, I have heard Giant Steps and Sophisticated Lady.
This is bearing in mind my love for the Dead, Neil Young and Hendrix.

Hear hear, Carole, HEAR BLOODY HEAR!! And I have the 12" of New Year's Day as well as around half of U2's albums; I own most of Eddie Van Halen's output. Hell I don't even think Beat It is the best guitar solo on a Wacko record, but this list is so shoddy I can only see it as an insult to my intelligence. Given my love for RR, that's why I'm so bloody cross! As you can see, i'm calming down nicely ... NOT!

Between a very busy domestic week (half-term hols) and an inundated music week (Social CDs, Dropboxed selections, an mp3 player to fill for a present, and barbryn's AOTW pick - which I haven't forgotten), I just haven't had time to even think about the Spotify or 'Boxed Solo lists.

Um, it's not the list I would have made myself either... but then, isn't it always like this? With lyrics-based topics, you get something "objective" to focus on, so those are somewhat more agreeable. But solos are all about subjectivity. For instance, some people hate solos full stop. For the life of me, I don't get how that can be possible, but that's the way it is.

It's like the other night, when Isaac woke me up in the middle of the night for a cuddle, and then I looked at the clock by his bed and thought, ah...2am, plenty of time to sleep. But they'd played with the clock and it was actually 7 am, but it's dark this time of year and we all had to get up in the cold and dark. Just cruel.

I'm not pointing out tfd or toffee who's taste is more (respectfully) on the margins. I am calling out Magicman, EJ (apart from the more obscure "world music" stuff that we wouldn't hear without your introduction. Thank you.) and Ladysteen. Agree with Nilpferd that the Hippo way should be followed, but also think that our community should be self-policing, and that we should raise issues as & when they occur. Am worried that we are heading for: "I would like to recommend the following 350 songs".

Carole: buking over U2 or Simple Minds does nothing to help your cause. Despite periods of turgidity, some of us fond of them. No hard feelings, though.
I don't really have a "cause" Shoey, I was (and still am) really annoyed by the cautious and unadventurous list, Dark Star notwithstanding.

Mind you, if you think my dislike of U2 is a bit partisan, consider what my feelings would have been if Travis, Keane or Coldplay had been listed.
IMHO, the B list is better than the A list this week, at least it has some lateral thinking.
Can't say I'm too keen on the A-List or the B-List - but then I wasn't too keen on the whole darn theme. Disappointed that The Great Gig In The Sky didn't make it (it would have been nice to see at least one example of thinking outside the box) but not really too surprised. Very disappointed that not one Jan Akkerman/Focus track made it to either list.

ReplyDeleteAnd it does seem like he got something from it. His phrase 'tapestry of solos' is actually one I rather like, as the individual instruments do weave together to create a picture.
To also learn that Sister Ray is one of his favourite tracks of all time shifted my view of him some more. Didn't he say he was a hip-hop man?
