"A sickening bad-taste exercise". No not me , but one of me fillums which has continued to flummox audiences since it was released in.......(point)
What's its relevance to music? Well...
...theeee freaky song sung by theee Freak (can't say more but Point for the character) has been covered by Bauhaus, Devo, Norma Loy, WC3 (à trois dans les WC), Haus Arafna, Miranda Sex Garden, Annie Christian, John Hasbrouck, Pankow, Pixies, The Sherrysa-Whore, Desolation Yes, Bang Gang, Helios, Donny Who Loved Bowling, Forgotten Sunrise and Tuxedomoon. Indie rockers Modest Mouse borrowed lines from thee song for "Workin' on Leavin' the Livin'", as did the anarcho-punk band Rubella Ballet for their song "Slant and Slide. That's not a bad resumee for a song sung by a freak in a nightmare fillum.
I'll post the song itself when the SpillPoints have been dished out:
1. Fillum(easy)
2. Gremlinfc's character (easy)
3. Character who sings song
4. Who/what is the quote "Oh you ARE sick!" about?
5. What's unusual about the music for the fillum?
...everything is fine, everything is fine.
Of course some people think it's unwatchable , pretentious shite...it's mos def weird, whichever viewpoint you take.
is it Eraserhead? Haven't seen it. Otherwise I nominate The Sound of Music / The Lonely Goatherd / Maria / A boy singing 'You are 16 going on 17', and finally the unusual thing about the music is that you can still sing all the words to Doe a Deer 42 years after you last saw the film.
ReplyDeleteSorry.
Eraserhead it is Alim- un point!
ReplyDeleteCounts me out of the rest of this one then; I'm another one who's never seen Eraserhead.
ReplyDeleteDsD - I can see how that would be a problem here!
ReplyDeleteHave you heard from Rockingmitch? End of this week will be tough.
Definitely an 'unsettling' film and still one of Lynch's best. It's a few years since I saw it last but isn't the song performed by the girl behind the radiator, amidst all the industrial-noise music? Initially released in 1977, with Lynch-fave Jack Nance as Henry Spencer.
ReplyDeleteRespeck to Chris there for year and singer of said song "Girl behind the radiator"(or maybe "in")so 2 SpillPoints!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you - bizarre and very unsettling.
But good too.
Worth a look just for the chicken dinner scene. Don't know why Lynch isn't making movies anymore, Blue Velvet was a little overrated, but the one about the old man riding across the US on his lawnmower was wonderful.
ReplyDeletewith you there Schuhmeister all the way - maybe he's considered passe?
ReplyDeleteThat chicken dinner scene is legendary...
Inland Empire wasn't too long ago. And that gave me plenty to chew on...
ReplyDeleteWill investigate, Chris. Thanks
ReplyDeleteShoey, be warned. It's a 3-hour colour version of Eraserhead, mixed with Mulholland Drive, including a soap opera played by rabbits in a hotel room. I was pinned to my seat by the sound and sight of it, despite having only the usual vague clue of what it was about.
ReplyDeleteNow enough time has elapsed, I may be ready for another ride....
Wooooaaaa Inland Empire is even wackier in some ways than Eraserhead. Aquired taste mos def - I loved it , but that's another story...
ReplyDeleteJust seen The Road. Even with more of pre-Event life being shown and some rather-too-clean clothes being worn than in the novel, it's a tough watch. Some way beyond 'unsettling'.
ReplyDeleteYes Chris - what about the human pantry in the cellar when Viggo & Son found the house...it well freaked me out - the bleakness of it all : going to increase me tin collection ...mustn't forget the sos-mix...
ReplyDeleteOn the bright side, any day I see Michael K Williams is a good day!
ReplyDeleteAnd with no clothes on!
ReplyDeleteHe is amazing in 'The Wire' !
ReplyDeleteOmar is my favourite character.
ReplyDeleteHe's cool and brilliantly acted : I also like Idris Elba as Stringer Bell- the music is wicked too...
ReplyDelete1. Eraserhead
ReplyDelete2. Henry Spencer
3. Lady in the radiator
4. Their freak/monster baby
5. Soundtrack by David Lynch himself
Thanks to those who spilled along.
gremlin, there's an article about Idris Elba in today's Observer:
