Vaguely Geeky Quotes Quiz!

Whilst waiting for some renders to um, render - I was idly surfing Wired Magazine's website, and came across an article 100 quotes geeks should know. As an avowed geek myself, this interested me, and I thought I'd share it. A lot of them had a US geek cultural bent, so I've whittled it down to 20 more universal ones, and taken away the attributions for each quote. Many 'Spill points are on offer here, so get quizzing (and don't you dare click the above link til after!!)

1.“Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.”

4. “Bill, strange things are afoot at the Circle K.”
5. “Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple.”
6. “Didja ever look at a dollar bill, man? There’s some spooky shit goin’ on there. And it’s green too.”

14. “We’re going to need a bigger boat.”

    ReplyDelete
  5. 11 = C3-PO (a new hope?)

    9 Indiana Jones

  6. If 13 is Marlon in Apocalypse Now, he was actually quoting Oppenheimer's comment on the invention of the atomic bomb and HE was quoting the Bhagavad Gita, when Krishna reveals himself to Arjuna.

Is that geeky enough for you?

  7. 5 - Willy Wonka
8 - I thought Indiana Jones, correct actor, incorrect film by the looks of things

  8. 3 - Uncle Ben in Spiderman.

17 - Joshua the computer in Wargames.

    19 - Hiro in Heroes.

  9. Oops, steenbeck beat me to Wargames.

There were three I didn't know, and one of them isn't on the link (as far as I can see), so I'm going to guess it can be attributed to a much missed J.P.

  10. "I love you, but we only have 14 hours to save the Earth."

  11. I can help.

#6 is (?*%£@~!&$ - insert name later please, Ed...) in the original "Dazes And Confused" film.

And this ends the Sidecar contribution to Th' Spill for now. Off to save the cheerleader.

  13. Yes, definitely time for some more quintessentially British geek quotes...

    (a) "We are the Martians now."
    (b) "Did you know that that robot can hum like Pink Floyd?"
    (c) "I'm not stupid, I'm not expendable and I'm not going."
    (d) "What's a dreamcatcher?" "It's like a wind chime." "Then why didn't you say wind chime?"
    (e) "I reversed the polarity of the neutron flow."

  15. (e) is, I think, John Pertwee as Doctor Who. He liked the line so much when he first used it – I'll ask my mate which episode and fill that in later – that he used it at every opportunity afterwards.
Now, I've got your Festives to listen to…

  16. Steenbeck: 8 'spill points - almost penalised for calling him "Hans"
    Carole: 3 'spill points
    Shane: 2 'spill points
Gordon -a bonus 20 'spill points for being extra geeky with the Oppenheimer
Aba- 1 'spill point, plus a bonus 10 for adding extra geeky questions
    Zag - 1 spill point
    Catcher - 1 ya ta!
Shiv -- 1 stoned 'spill point to you, tee hee.

That still leaves 3 & 20 left to go - I'll be personally upset if no-one gets 20.

  17. I am so ungeek it's making my eyes water, but I DO know the answer to Abahachi's humming robot - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the BoyWonder has recently embarked upon a Douglas Adams hero-worship phase, which is a joy and a wonder to behold!)

  18. a) is Quatermass (I think it's Quatermass and the Pit)

    d) might be Buffy the Vampire Slayer

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1 point to Mnemonic (yes, Quatermass and the Pit); 1 point to debbym (the original radio version of HHGTTG; the line was removed even from the commercial release of the series, presumably because the rights to an extract from Shine On You Crazy Diamond were too expensive; 1 point to GarethI (The Sea Devils). No, it isn't Buffy - these are all British series. But I give you...

"There is no cause for alarm. Actually there is cause for alarm, it just won't do you any good."

  20. is 20 Jack Black is School of Rock? Probably not.
    Is 3 not Spiderman then?

Some excellent films you've reminded me of there.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @beth -

not school of rock, it's not even from a film, or book, or comic, or tv series...

3 is indeed spiderman, from Amazing Fantasy issue #15 (1962)

  22. Have to say that 20 sounds most like something said on one of the Spill podcasts, though off the top of my head I can't remember which one.

  23. Here's the ones I know
    1) MOnty Python and the Holy Grail 'Constitutional Peasant'

  24. Wot no 'Spill points? Now how am I going to pay for all my wild living & mind altering substances?

    ReplyDelete
  25. # 20 wouldn't be Simon Rattle doing 'Sacre du Printemps' would it? No, didn't really think so...
(I was thinking of a project he did in Berlin with Royston Maldoom, which was released as a film called 'Rhythm Is It!')

I'm going for an Abahachi podcast - do I have to give my 'Spill point back if I'm wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Abahachi -you're on the verge of getting a record 1000 'spill points here,,,,keep going!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Catcher's "I gave her my heart. She gave me a pen" is John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler in say Anything...sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Definitely not me. I have a nagging feeling that I've heard this recently, which would suggest that it was part of the MultiSpillerCast last month, and for some reason the syntax reminds me of Japanther, but no, I honestly don't know and am only guessing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Isn't it the first podcast? The Blimpcast?

    ReplyDelete
  30. STeenbeck steals the 1000 'spill points from Abahachi - by correctly identifying ME, Blimpy McFlah, whose podcast catchphrase is that very quote!!

    Yowser!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am not a geek, okay. I totally reject all forms of geekdom (whilst respecting them and offering them equal opportunities, of course.)
So I refuse to tell you how many out of 20 I got right.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh....My....God!!!!!!!

1000 'Spill points!! I'm hyperventilating. Do I take them all at once, or should I go for 10 spill points a year for 100 years?!?!?! I...just can't believe my luck! I've imagined this day, but....

Actually, I'd like to say that I thought I knew the answer as soon as I realized it wasn't on the wired website, but then Abahachi got SO CLOSE, and I had to hold my weesht....

    sigh. 1000 'Spill points...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Steenbeck, as a result of the global financial crisis, 'Spill points are worth 6,000% less that this time last year. Sorry to break the bad news...and to anyone who's been clinging onto or saving up their 'Spill points, your boat has sailed my friends.

1,000 'Spill points wouldn't even get you a signed copy of "Speng: The Man, The Myth, The Terrible Bastard" second hand tatty paperback with the last chapter ripped out.

    :-(

    ReplyDelete
  34. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I just put a non-refundable deposit on an island in the middle of the Atlantic!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Can I just say that I have a good quality, only slightly foxed, illustrated hardback copy of "Speng: The Man, The Myth, The Terrible Bastard", complete with the last chapter, for sale.

That final chapter is pretty hot stuff. The episode where Speng goes partying with a well-known member of the Royal Family, Wilson Pickett and The Vernon Girls is incandescent stuff and his story about being at the sessions for that legendary album with Gerry and the Pacemakers backing Nico is truly the dark side of the 1960s dream.

Of course, the libel laws prevent me mentioning the names of the Hollywood husband and wife couple who Speng had a three-day sex and drugs orgy with in Honolulu.

Offers over 10,000 'Spill points only please.

    ReplyDelete
  36. And that is why you should always read the last chapter of any book first. just incase you get hit by a bus before finishing it.

And, if Speng's not done it, it ain't worth doing!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Final answers on mine, incidentally, were Blake's Seven and Garth Merenghi's Darkplace. Whaddya mean, you've never heard of the legendary horror writer Garth Merenghi?

    ReplyDelete
  38. You really should have heard of Garth:
