Blimpy's Big Intros Quiz !

Okay then! Welcome all to the first of Blimpy's Big Intros Quizzez!

In the following podbean track there are 15 (fifteen) intros, and 1 (one) outtro.

The first person to name all of them wins a glittering prize!

I've kept it nice and easy, nothing on here is obscure, so I expect full marks all round!

Ready, set, go!!

  3. Great outro..
not too keen on the rest, tho'..;-)

  4. Hehe, me and the bloke went "Ugh, jazz..."

    ReplyDelete
  5. ..sounds like we should team up for a pub quiz, then..

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ha! I got 9 and 2 "know-it-but-dunno-the-title"!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hee hee, I think the collective Spill brain should be able to solve my riddle, so I'm counting you all as one big pub quiz team.

Okay Spillers, start posting your answers!

    ReplyDelete
  8. OK here's what I got:
    Brianstorm
    Sloop John B
    ??
    ??Norah Jones!??
    ??
    I Want Candy
I know it but not the name
    ??
    Darling Nikki
    ??
    Gold Lion
    ??
I know it but not the name
    Caper Cod Kwassa Kwassa
    Africa!!
Bitches Brew, I may be wrong with the track, but it's definitely from the album

  9. Arctic Monkeys; Brian Storm/Beach Boys: Sloop John B/Extreme: more Than Words/ Blind Melon: NO rain/ Voice of the Beehive: Monsters and Angels (YAY!)/Paul Simon: Me and Julio/Toto: Africa.

We also thought we heard some Soundgarden or L7 alike and something Blur soundtracky. Then we argued about it...

    ReplyDelete
  10. The end of Bitches Brew it was, EJ. I can only add that none of the other 14 have ever touched my cd player.. wasn't one of them Summer Loving, or something like that? Not my specialist topic..

    ReplyDelete
  11. All correct so far, apart from there's no:

    Extreme
    Paul Simon
    Norah Jones
    Soundgarden
    Blur

TracyK- you're on the right track with the L7alike

    ReplyDelete
  12. That is L7, with Pretend We're Dead right?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Nearly- it's a cover of Pretend We're Dead...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Bollocks...

We did guess it was Bitches Brew too, probably because we both know Miles Davis is 'the important one' of jazz. Leave us in our ignorance, we're doing ok...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Argh, it's CSS doing Pretend That we're Dead...

    ReplyDelete
  16. There's only 4 left.

    Good going Team Spill!

  17. The one before VotB is driving me nuts and one sounds very like The Game of Love but isn't! How'm I going to sleep???

    ReplyDelete
  18. I heard "Hang On, Sloopy" in there somewhere

    ReplyDelete
  19. ejd already correctly identified the one before votb, it's Darling Nikki by the Foo Fighters, a fine cover indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's not We Will Rock You in there is it? who is that? Queen?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ah, I thought it wouldn't be a cover and realised it wasn't Prince. I am officially stupid but at least I can sleep!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think you got it confused with Gold Lion there Steenbeck, the drums sound as bombastic

    ReplyDelete
  23. @steen - ejaydee got it; it's Gold Lion by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

@tracyk - night night, at least we don't have to wait up for the RR blog tonight

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'd still like to read DOrian's last column, but it's not up yet!
I wonder who'll replace Maddy when she's on holiday?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sorry, got confused about the numbers of the songs.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Another great column by Dorian, so the 2 I didn't know the titles of was Hang On Sloopy and Pretend We're Dead. That one that sort of sounds like Norah Jones or Extreme does seem familiar though.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sloop John B

    Corinne Bailey Rae?

    Summer Lovin'

    I want Candy

    Toto

Only listened once, I'll have another go

    ReplyDelete
  28. Carole has successfully identified Corinne Bailey Rae (Go Put Your Records On)!!

It's the 4th intro, that has variously been guessed at as either extreme or norah jones.

I'm stunned however that no-one has got intro no. 3 already!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Great game, Blimp - and beautifully executed. Edge taken off it when I could only get three (with a couple of 'ohh, I know that'...). But hell, that's why RR is so compulsive - all those great tunes you wouldn't otherwise have known.
And talking of great bass lines, the opening to Keep On Running (Spencer Davies Group) is another golden oldie...

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's not Panda Bear, is it? I'm scared to guess I got the last one so far wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I meant Take Pills, to mention the name. It's got that trainish sound, anyway...

    ReplyDelete
  32. CORRECTO MNEMONIC!!!

tis indeed Dry The Rain by The Beta Band - I thought that would be the first to go!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Blimpy, I hope you're pleased with yourself, ruining my perfectly good evening. I began by confidently writing down the numbers 1 to 15 on a sheet of paper, then pressed play, sat back and prepared to dazzle everyone with my astounding knowledge of popular music.

Two minutes later, with the words 'Sloop John B' staring up at me from an otherwise blank sheet of paper, I found myself feeling a little foolish!

And then, to make things even worse, out of all the 'I-know-that-one-but-can't-quite-think-what-it-is-right-now-I'm-sure-it'll-come-to-me-in-a-minute' tracks that you so ingeniously put together, the one that I was most certain that I absolutely definitely knew (no.3) turns out to be a track that I've never heard in my life!

So thank you Blimpy - thank you very much...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well, I think I'd have got Hang On Sloopy, but I'd already read it in an email...Time for bed, I think, and I'm away for the weekend so have a lovely time at the social, you carousers, and pat Dorian on the back from me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey ToffeeBoy,

I'd like to say that I'm ever so sorry for ruining your evening, but the indie snob in me is loving every minute of being in the driver's seat.

Of course, the only way to redress the balance is to make me suffer at the hands of an intros quiz that I have to take part in.

    Bring it on!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. i think i've just realised that intro number 8, the only intro that no-one has got yet, is maybe the obscure one out of the fifteen tunes, because it's a cover - an the intro sounds noting like the original.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Did you put that together in Garageband?

    ReplyDelete
  38. hi steen, yes, yes i did. you can drag and drop straight from itunes to the timeline in gband, and then it's a simple case of using the apple-t shortcut to chop the intros off the rest of the tune!

you have to do one! please!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. re number 8, clue: a non alcoholic drink.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "a non alcoholic drink beloved of journalists" would be a better all round clue to the song and band.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is completely cheating and probably wrong, but some googlage revealed that the editors covered Orange Crush. Which is the only drink I can think of w/out alcohol in my current state.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ehm Blimpy. Coming late to this but once we've guessed them all... Could you post their songs in their entirety? Gagging to hear them cos they are really good intros. Bar one... :O)

    ReplyDelete
  43. it was indeed editors doing orange crush (can be heard on hype machine)

    that means they're all guessed!

    well done everyone!

the prize is me posting them in their entirety , as req'd by FP!

jolly good show all round, who's going to do th enext intros quiz then?

    ReplyDelete
  44. If I can find some equivalent software for my PC, I'll do one. It will probably take a combined effort though, I doubt anyone would guess all the tracks, but I'll try to put something in for everyone. And one that no-one will get, of course.. heh heh..

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nilpferd, if you find equivalent software for a pc, I'd love to know how you get on.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @nilp/mne - have you tried Audacity? it's free, and i think gf uses it.

i've not tried it myself, cos i have a mac- but i think it's a good 'un.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Actually I became so frustrated with Audacity that I sent them a nasty email telling them what I thought of it: don't ask, I've blocked it totally, I have no memory but it was very frustrating, I think it was related to their 'help' menu. But there's thousands wot love it so it might just be me.
Instead I use Sound Studio, a Mac piece of software that's wonderful! Like having an intuitive recording/editing/mixing studio in your living room, I use it a lot. It's not free but it's very reasonable and there's a free download test you can get.
Re. the above 'quiz', when I was in the RAF we had a short training film about aircraft recognition, there was a bit about fighter pilots having only instants to recognise and react to other planes. In the film they were told that they'd have 1/5th of a second to identify a series of enemy and allied fighters, everyone said "Impossible". The instructor flashed the image of Marilyn Monroe with her dress over her head for 1/5th second and there was 100% correct identification. So they proceeded with the aircraft recognition.
Which prompted me yesterday to scroll through my iTunes file to check for cuts where I could post less than 1 second, there's lots, but my taste doesn't exactly match this group, I didn't know a single one of the above. I've got a couple of other things going just now but I might try it.
ps: Does this qualify as the record breaking comment and if so wot's my prize!

    ReplyDelete
  48. hi goneF, yes, i think it is the record breaking comment (and a very interesting comment too); the prize is dinner at mine tonight, in about 3 hours time I'm going to be throwing some roquefort on a cow's ass and cracking open a gran reserva - see you about 7ish, North East Fife?

    ReplyDelete
  49. FP: try this link for the quiz tracks:

    http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=27855

there's a download file button on the right - can you tell me if it works, please?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Morning Blimpster - I copy/pasted the link into my browser but the page wouldn't open. Anyone else manage?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi FP. Bugger, I'll try a different file hosting site. BRB.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I went to the Wiki site but the download file icon doesn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  53. oh pants, I'll try and podbean them later on this evening then. sorry everyone.
