You don't drink, don't smoke - What do you do? FP's Vice Playlist

Chocolate, in case you're wondering. In all shapes and forms. It ranges from a simple Cadbury Fruit and Nut, to anything dark with orange zest to the humble After Eight. I just adore the stuff. There. Haven't done one of these for while but I felt compelled to this week because it's a splendid subject and covers two RR no-hopers which I'd actually like to defend here: String and Phil Collins. Must be off so enjoy. Oh and....

What's yours....?

  1. I don't have a secret vice, but you're welcome to borrow my Black & Decker Workmate.

  2. Knitting.

I knit on the bus and on the tube, I knit in front of the computer (obviously, at the moment I am knitting with only my left hand, while typing with my right), I knit myself to sleep at night, I knit whenever I need to keep myself awake...
I cannot pass a wool shop without just having a quick look, and usually end up buying a ball or two from the bargain basket. I knit socks, scarves, mitts and hats, nothing bigger than that.

Last night I even frogged a pair of mittens nobody was interested in, so as to have enough wool for (yet) another hat (well, it had been requested by the cutest teacher at my daughter's school, and the weather IS cold here).

I considered "outing" myself on the mothership and posting a song about knitting, but the only one I know is by Meryn Cadell and is SCARY, way more mental health than secret vice: I'm not that far gone yet
    (http://www.last.fm/music/Meryn+Cadell/_/Knitting?autostart)

Well, can't sit here chatting all day, I've got 4 wimples and 8 *chainmail* cowls to finish by next weekend (msdebbyjr's class is having a medieval themed party for Fasching, all knights and Burgfräuleins)

  3. If you can knit chainmail style you must be seriously good. My gran and mam were/are both very competent - they could do the cable thing where you have to twist it round on a separate needle. That's a nice vice to have. Productive and creative. Unlike scoffing terrys chocolate oranges.

  4. And that's noted for the Black and Decker. We've got some pictures to put up so it'll come in handy. Nice one.

  5. Hach - that'd be German ones? Bienenstich? Kaesekuchen? Myam myam.

  6. Have to admit to liking some of Sting's music, the problem is, like Bono, whenever he opens his mouth he comes across as a complete tool. The same probably goes for anyone else who wants to be known by a single name (said Shoegazer). Phil Collins is a good drummer, as for the rest......

  7. Have to go with you. I just feel that Bourbon Street and Thru these Walls are both very fine songs and totally fitting to the theme this week. Cat's chance in hell, though, eh? Miaowww. Sssssssssssss!!!!

  8. Actually any cakes whatsoever, not to mention crumpets, muffins and scones, but life would indeed scarcely be worth living without Streuselkuechen and Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte.

  9. Definately "String".....woof woof!

  10. My ex used to make chain mail on my dining room table. It made a right mess of the table. Vices? Doing this when my son wants me to play something with him. OK! OK! I'm coming!!

  11. 'Hach: with you on the Schwarzwaelder. Seeing how near I live the place it's a criminally long time since I had some. This will be rectified....
    _____
    Blimp: You pervy hound!!
    _____
Alimunday: What's with the chain mail? I'm getting echoes of that very pervy scene in Excalibur where the King disguises himself magically as the princess's lover and rogers her rotten until she realises it's not her husband.

    Oh yes you did.
And it's all Helen Mirren's fault.

  12. Vices? Hmmmmmmmmmm? Where to start!

I don't smoke but I drink (too much according to government sponsored scare tactic limits), I eat chocolate, lots of chocolate, I love food and I eat too much.

I spend far too much money on books, CDs, shoes, clothes, makeup, DVDS and various other non essential fun stuff.

I don't go to the gym often enough and I don't mind being a size 16.

There are other vices too but this is a family blog and those are probably best left to my own blog space.

  13. -Vargas does not smoke, does not drink, does not make love.. what do you do, Vargas?-
Emilio Largo, trying to impress James Bond in Thunderball.. my (not so) secret vice, too many viewings of too many Bond films in my teens, and a tedious tendency to quote lines of dialogue therefrom..

  14. Playing Freecell on my computer...

  15. ...Aaand we're all thinking that Carole sounds great. A bon vivant as they say over here. Keep it that way!!
    ___
Nilpferd. With you on that one. I have all of them on DVD. Every snigle one. It's just the cars, the glorious locations, the crazy and inventive villains, Sean, the clothes the girls get to wear. The whole lot. Is your favourite Goldfinger or is that too predictable?
    ____
I love white chocolate too. that counts. Not so much of a one for video games. The blogging takes up too much time....

Anyone out there a secret EBay addict? Fess up!!! Ejay that's an abbreviation of 'confess' as opposed to 'fesses'. And we're back to Jacques Dutronc.....

  16. Sorry about the gremlins on the deezer widget. I hope they get that sorted
    FP....

  17. They all have their moments, bar the Brosnans.. I always had a soft spot for OHMSS.. stuck in an alpine retreat filled with nubile young women, curling in a kilt.. so to speak...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Her Majesty's secret service, of course..

    ReplyDelete
  19. ..or at least, its most famous member..

  20. FP - nothing so exciting I'm afraid ... he used to make it for various friends in various re-enactment societies (Vikings, Sealed Knot etc). - I also have a friend who builds trebuchets should you ever require one ... not a lot you can do in secret with a trebuchet, though. (Not that I've tried, of course).

  21. Re enacting the vikings????? They raped and pillaged dressed in animal skins, didn't they? (taps side of nose) Say. Naw. Mowwah!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Totally off-topic FP, but if you go onto www.daytrotter.com, Merz has done a live session for them and you can download four of his songs.

Thanks for trying to give me the credit for Merz but just imagine the chaos if everyone started claiming an artist as "theirs". Chris might insist that any Grateful Dead nom was his; webcorewebcore would claim Captain Beefheart. Can't be having it, somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  23. And Dollar would definitely be mine!! Thanks for the tip. I sent Merz an email to tell him he's in the list and he thanked me back and put the infos on his site. Worra gent. www.merz.co.uk

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm claiming Mark Stewart as nobody else seems to want him & I don't think anyone could prise Mr. Richman away from Toffeeboy.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I might have to fight Chris for The Grateful Dead, or I'll settle for claiming King Crimson as mine.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeeyyyyy!! Stick those flags in guys!!! Toffee gets the Prefabs cuz I'm in a good mood.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's funny, I always think of sourpus in connection with JR

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh, I have quite a few!! Artists/songs to stick flags in, that is, not secret vices, because I have absolutely none of those being practically perfect in every way. And I think a lot of you were admitting to GUILTY PLEASURES, because can you imagine a vice squad chasing down a perp knitting, eating chocolate, and setting up their iPod for solitaire?

I like playing solitaire on David's iPod.

I missed all the IAOPM fun, it was like being at a party with lots of interesting conversations but having laryngitis, and it was just too much of an effort to talk. With the whole keyboard thing.

And Shoegazer--how old are your daughters? Are 3&6 too young for Coraline? Because we've been having a heap of fun with the website, too, but I don't want them to wake up in the middle of the night terrified of us.

  29. shoey
do we fight for Wolfgang press. as no-one else wants them (I did notice tin had taken an interest in 'going south' so we might be softening others)

me and Blimpy tried for a while to get Viva Voce on RR with very little extra help.

    @steen
the record collection isn't the secret vice -it's the paypal bills!

    ReplyDelete
  30. But Shoey, I LOVE Mark Stewart! All right, I know I heard him first because of you but this is precisely why Marconius 7 is right to uphold the rules. After all, I was listening to the Good Captain while webcorewebcore was still lisping his way through Baa, Baa, Black Sheep or similar.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Steen - think it depends on the kids - there were a few wee ones there & none ran out screaming, but wouldn't be surpised if there were a few nightmares about sinister dolls with button eyes.

Mnemonic - more than happy to share Mark's beautiful singing voice with you.

Shane - It's rock, paper, scissors time for the Press, unless you let me keep the Goats.

    ReplyDelete
  32. shoey - if I was competitive I'd post the songs and covers that I designed (I didn't have iTunes then) of the first year of RRs that I did.

First Goats that I can definitely link to a column is:
BAD WEATHER november 05 here's a scan of MY track- listing.. not a lot like Dorians I wager. I did try to get 'No Children' in the first childrens theme, I also tried to get him to play it at a wedding he was going to DJ at.

  33. Hey, I'm happy to share the Prefabs and Jojo with anyone who cares to join me - but I want Clare Grogan to myself. There, that's my (not so) secret vice out in the open...

    ReplyDelete
  34. But where did you stick the flag ? tee hee

    ReplyDelete
  35. Shane: Good job you're not competative. 1st ran across Mr. Darnielle at an Extra Glens live show in '93 or '94. Seen him live about 5 times, over the years since. Don't know what happened to the other Glen - but he wasn't as interesting.

Didn't mean in real life shoey just RR
just found it odd that it has taken so long to get the Goats in RR. and then you get them both times.. until the great RRindex was done I wouldn't have noticed.

I also hadn't noticed that i had never got in the A list til maddy started.. and then it was for Nena.. how universal is my taste in music? (it really wasn't s'posed to come across as competitive- i was just distracting myself from work)

  37. @ FP
    ...secret EBay addict?
I was, until I found freecycle. Now I'm addicted to that. Free breadmaker anyone? I've got 7 now.

As for anyone to claim my own, since I mostly just soak up whatever y'all bring to the table (I think thats called mixing a metaphor), I don't really have anyone. Sniff. I might nab Black Box Recorder though because it was discovering them through the paper's weekly listing (The British Motorway System made the top 10 for highway or traveling or something) that lead me here. I still enjoy them for the songs, and on top of that there is the emotional ... omg, speck of dust caught my eye. Sniff.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Freecycle yay! So far I've been a donor but I've pretty much equipped someone else's kitchen with pots, pans and plates and their bedroom with mountains of duvets, pillows and bedding.

    ReplyDelete
  39. oooh we*re up to 45!!! You people rool!!! I lerv lerv lerv EBay and buy up Kenzo sweaters whenever I can.... But freecycle....!!! I. May. Be. Gone. For. Some. Time.
