DJ for a nite - This party needs YOU!!!!

Evenin' all. Just popping in to make use of the collective wealth of musical know how that is our very own 'Spill. And that means YOU. Here's the brief: a very dear friend of mine is organising a New Year's party in his house so we can "all have a bit of a dance". Now we are talking French people of an age range of, say, between 35 and 55. We are talking global, planetary chunes which have made people bop "from Lake Geneva to the Finland station". I'm talking "holiday" by Madonna. That global. I've already made a playlist which I submit to your wise approval. And what I want to know is....

What real classics have I missed out and what should not, under any circumstances, be included in that list (otherwise I shall spend a sh_t evening...).

p.s spare a thought for me and give me some hip stuff too - even if I'm alone on the dance floor...

  1. It's FP by the way - but you knew that...

  2. Mory Kanté - Yé ké yé ké

It was a huge hit in 1987, especially in France.

I remember being in La Baule in Brittany that Summer and it was playing in almost every bar you went into.

  3. I used to run a music night that attracted alt rock kids, indie kids, metal kids, and other assorted weirdos - the only tune i used to spin that got them all nodding their heads was "gigantic" by the pixies.

    hope this helps!

  4. I didn't say I Want You Back by the J5. I'll get to the "don'ts" after I've made a few positive contributions.
Also, two songs whose endurance in nightclubs (I mean the ones young people go to), Murder She Wrote by Chaka Demus & Pliers and Jump Around by House Of Pain.

C'est Comme ça by Rita Mitsouko, although I see you've already got Marcia Baila. Too Young and If I Ever Feel Better by Phoenix.
How about some Enrico Macias, some Kassav. Man Smart (Woman Smarter), Coconut Woman and Jump In The Line by Harry Belafonte.
I'd give a go to Dizzee Rascal's Holiday, We Are The People by Empire Of The Sun to get you started.

  9. Oops, meant to say I didn't "see" I Want You Back.

  13. I would change Mustang Sally to Wilson Pickett's version, actually might go for In The Midnight Hour instead.
Yannick's Ces Soirees-la, and Simply Red will stip me right in my dance moves. For the former, I would go for Cloclo or Frankie Valli (I'm sure you'll have a few asking you if you know that it's originally a Claude song), but then again it's your partym and you can play what you want to.
Hey, It's My Party by Lesley Gore! I'm sure there's a French version too.

  14. If you want a bit of fromage how about Holly Vallance and Kiss Kiss?

I'd also think that Transvision Vamp's Baby I Don't Care would be worth including, also the B-52s and Love Shack

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes to kiss kiss and HOW could I forget Love Shack???? That would wake the dead. We need walk like an egypsheeyan as well....

  16. Any Mecano in there? If not "Maquillaje" always seems to go down well!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tee Hee Frenchy you're as purist as me.... I just felt that the Yannik versiosn would have more appeal. Mind you, given the age of the invités I night be better off with the Clo Clo verssion. Do we need some Dalida in there?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Shantel - Disko boy

    bouncy!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey Maki - I love Mecano - great call!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Great call on Disko Boy to bounce around to after too much Pol Roger

  24. And if people want to get a little pseudo flamenco as the night wears on a try out their cava-fuelled "taconeo" (stamping, basically) artistry "Una Rosa es Una Rosa" (Mecano, again)is the can't fall off option!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Idly toying with "Fuck the pain away". Well they won't understand the lyrics... No?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Carole I got 2 out of 4 there - we're thinking along the same lines here. And que si to the flamenco. Now widening the challenge - the friend in question can actually dance. He's conversant in all things cha cha cha, tango etc. Any ideas for that too?

    ReplyDelete
  27. How about a little something from our neck of the woods - Kane Gang - Closest Thing... (Lovely S Wonder harp rip off included)

    ReplyDelete
  28. FP - yes, you did! D'oh! I missed them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nice for smoochy slows at the end of the evening - when people just want to fall on each other. It's in. No love for peaches? I'd love to dance to that. Alone on the dance floor again...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh no go ahead with Peaches, although, since none of us will be there , you may indeed find yourself dancing on the dancefloor.

    ReplyDelete
  31. oooh low battery have to go to bed. But please continue to talk amongst yourselves - we're on a good vibe here and you have totally sussed what I was after. You people rule, basically. Night night

  32. A couple from Missy Elliott;

    Get Ur Freak On

    4 My People

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cheers Frenchy. Tu ne m'aurais pas laissée seule sur la piste de danse - non?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mrs Maki (who knows her tangos) is asleep. I champion Gardel on RR (tirelessly and tiresomely, I'll warrant!) but my knowledge is limited. Tango "cantado" (Gardel) and tango "bailado" (what you're looking for) are two very different kettles of pescado, so I'll check with Mrs Maki tomorrow and I've no doubt she'll come up with some corkers.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Does "500 miles" have any cross-continent appeal?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Very good list.

In my experience, if you want to get French people of any age dancing, Desenchantee by Mylene is the way to do it. Possibly some Shakira too.

    ReplyDelete
  37. There was a very good Italian Disco comp from a couple of years back. Called "After Dark" if memory serves.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Robert Palmer - Addicted To Love
    Maria Vidal - Body Rock
Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way

    and possibly

    Billy Idol - White Wedding

    ReplyDelete
  39. And what? No place for

    Ça Plane Pour Moi

    ????

    ReplyDelete
  40. Breeders - Cannonball
    Underworld - Cowgirl

  41. Posted this somewhere else, a couple of years ago (post dated November 11, 2001....)

just came back from a party where I spinned some records, kept the people in motion with some of the following:

    Stone Roses - Fool's Gold
    Black Crowes - Remedy
Public Enemy - Fight the power
    dEUS - Suds and Soda
Beastie Boys - Body movin' (Fatboy Slim remix)
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
Talking Heads - Burning down the house
    B-52's - Planet Claire
    the Knack - My Sharona
Stereo MC's - Deep down and dirty
    Bar-Kays - Holy Ghost
    Madonna - Ray of light
    Cult - She sells sanctuary

  42. no "Come On Eileeen"??

and surely the time is ripe to bring back "The Conga" to house parties? no?......oh....ok then!

  43. Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 was always popular amongst the international ex-pats in Amsterdam. Life is Life by Opus is still a big floor-filler on the continent, if Polish nightclubs are anything to go by. Probably best not go with the Laibach version.

  44. I have just such a DJ list on my iPod, as it happens... Won't bore you with all of it but how about:

Sam & Dave - Soul Man
Ike and Tina - River Deep Mountain High
Jackie Wilson - (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher
Freda Payne - Band of Gold
    Frankie Valli - The Night
MJ - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
Shannon - Let The Music Play
    Ne-Yo - Closer
Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor
Groove Armada - Song 4 Mutya
    Destiny's Child - Bootylicious
    Justin Timberlake - SexyBack
    Girls Aloud - Love Machine
    Scissor Sisters - Filthy/Gorgeous
    S Club 7 (really!) - Don't Stop Movin'
Billy Ocean (really really!) - Red Light Spells Danger
    Grandmaster Flash - White Lines

I have a vague recollection of The Cure being massive in France, so The Love Cats? Or Friday I'm In Love? Oh and the classic that is Voyage Voyage by Desireless. Natch. I could go on... bb

  45. The one song in the world guaranteed to get me on the dancefloor:

Dee-Lite - Groove is in the Heart

    ReplyDelete
  46. Off the top of my head:

Kool & the Gang - Jungle Boogie
    Los Fabulosos Cadillacs - Matador
La Mosca Tse-Tse - Yo Te Quiero Dar
The Cure - Just Like Heaven
Black Sheep - The Choice is Yours
    The O'Jays - Love Train
    Justice - D.A.N.C.E.
Patrick Hernandez - Born To Be Alive (It's NYE, right?!)
    The Pogues - Fiesta
    Tears for Fears - Shout
Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen
Souls of Mischief - '93 Til Infinity
Rihanna - Don't Stop the Music
Rufus - Tell Me Something Good

    ReplyDelete
  47. Nice list, Lambret. How about Edge of Seventeen and then Bootylicious? Just to show that riff off to maximum effect!

And then maybe Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' followed by Don't Stop The Music. Or even Soul Makossa...

OK, maybe that's a music-geek step too far!

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's massive response guys. I will enjoy this week end putting as many of those tracks as I can find in the list, I'll then sign up for deezer premium and download the lot. We could try playing the list from the computer but I have the feeling that t'internet will be chugging along on that evening - a bit embarrassing if your songs all stop half way though cos they're "loading". Thank you so much for being utterly inspired. Bisous FP

Well, my little boy likes it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Mrs Maki says if you want to dance tangos you could do worse than find any version (orquesta) of "La Cumparsita". There are sung versions, (two, one from Uruguay and the other from Argentina - this tango, surprisingly is Uruguayan!), which are very danceable too! Then, of course, you have "Por Una cabeza" that anyone who has seen "Scent of a Woman" will immediately recognise!

    ReplyDelete
  51. So ... what time? And should I bring a bottle?

I'll bring a case if you add ...

Disco To Go - Brides Of Funkenstein

and for a 'slow', from the same gang ... this is actually so long and slow that you can smooch, marry, raise a family and divorce before it's over.

    Just Like You

  52. Thanks for those additional chunes guys. Fabby. I put in another head-slapper - theme from S' express. Uno! Due! Tre! Quattro! Hope I'll have time to get 'em all in and then sign up for the Premium - download em all - test. I know damn well my pal will look at me with a pained expression "Qu'est-ce qu'on fait pour la musique"? At which point I shall smile enigmatically..... You all Rock.
