Number 1, in case you'd ever wondered

Just in case you've ever wondered why Field Commander Cohen's famous song is called 'Chelsea Hotel No 2, this is a (rather grainy, less than perfect sound) recording of Chelsea Hotel No 1. The backing singer on the left - about 4 minutes in - is Jennifer Warnes, who toured as one of his backing singers from through the 70s and 80s. Me, I've got my ticket for his concert in Cardiff tomorrow night (Saturday) locked in a safe at the bottom of a disused well

The beds i' the east are soft

This is the Antony and Cleopatra room at a b'n'b in Northumberland (in honour of 'Cleopatran charm', copyright sourpus on RR). They also have a Romeo and Juliet room. Do you think they know what happens in those plays?

I found I hadn't got a digital copy of Tomorrow Is A Long Time by Dylan, so it's Sandy Denny instead.

Finally .....

It has taken me months to get around to sorting out the various glitches and hitches that needed overcoming to actually post on the blog. .... Still to come, any possibility of me tempting you with bitmapped blackwax .... but this week of all weeks, and prompted by grenouillelimbfc's Parisian jaunt; a reminder that Liberty was originally black and beautiful ... or at least, deeply bronzed.

The Camper's Night In

Evening all. To the left you can see how I am spending my evening and, yes, that tankard is plastic. After all, you can take a man camping, but you cannot and will not deny him the pleasure of ale with a handle. Obviously the Boddies is a bit basic, but shops are scarce and I love it, so hey.
Currently we are fortunate enough to be on a campsite with wi-fi and so I am consequently able to (in a truly amazingly coincidental feat of planning...) watch City take on Schteve McLaren in the UEFA Cup, post on here for once AND hopefully join the midnight crew later on. Deep deep joy.
Just out of shot on the picture (by dint of it's being sound and, therefore, unphotographable) is our current soundtrack - the marvellous CDs donated to the cause by Shane, the immense travelling music that is Creedence (cheers TFD) and the very bizarre, squelch-filled new Mercury Rev. Trucking is good, thus far.
So, briefly, to update things: having spent more than we wanted to on fixing stuff and having spent longer than planned waiting for the arrival of a gorgeous new niece, Iris (Breeders, not Goo Goo Dolls, apparently), yesterday was our first night of independence on a site proper. I am writing this from Canterbury where we have spent two days shopping, touristing, waiting for the van to be fully fixed and marvelling at the English tourist experience. Which, in these parts, is very nice indeed, ta. Good pies.
Tomorrow is Whitstable for fish and chips, the weekend is back to Rochester to help out the nieces, then monday is Dover, Dunkirque and beyond. For about 10 days or so we plan to try and do a bit of Belgium and Holland, ending up at my mate's in Maastricht. At the risk of this turning into some crazy kind of Dice Man scenario, anyone got any suggestions for things to eat/see/try/drink/do?
As ever, ta.

RIP Yma Sumac

Who?
Yma Sumac. Peruvian singer, born Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo, descendant of the last Incan emperor, or at least that's what the legend purports. Another story is that she was Argentinean, of French origin, born Amy Camus (see what they did there). She died in Hollywood on Saturday.

Anyway, the one thing I know about her, is that she has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard and her music is a bit weird, eerie, one might say.

A-Z Update

Goneforeign and DarceysDad were kind enought to email me spreadsheets done by fourfoot which are up to date to the end of August. I have updated them further to be current and now have the A-Z by Artist done up to L. I am cross-checking them with the RR A-Z and find the occasional discrepancy which I try to resolve by seacrhing online. I should have the complete A-Z by Artizt done within the next week as it is pretty easy slogging now that I have this fantastic spreadsheet to work with.

Thanks to goneforeign DsD and fourfoot.

After the A-Z by Artists is done I will do an A-Z by Topic which I have already started on and then complete all the Topic Pages of which eleven are now done. I'm finding it quite fascinating which topics have already been done and am enjoying going back and reading the columns I missed. Because fourfoot included a "submitted by" column, I will add that info to the topic pages as well.

The Index is at http://breakoutreport.com/rrindex/

More updates next week.

Other Good News....

I got this message from the Manics in my inbox yesterday:

Hello everyone

We thought you would like to know that we have been making music. We have been in the studio with Mr Steve Albini recording live – to tape – analogue – no digital hiss – no Pro Tools – no safety nets. Quite scary, daunting but invigorating.

All the songs we are recording are lyrics left to us by Richey. Finally it feels like the right time to use them (especially after the last 18 months being so amazing with Send Away The Tigers). Musically, in many ways it feels like a follow up to the Holy Bible but there is also an acoustic side – tender, romantic, nihilism, “Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky” esque. It’s a record that celebrates the genius of his words, full of love, anger, intelligence and respect. We have to make this great. Wish us luck.

We hope to release the record next April or May. The working titles are “Journal for Plague Lovers” or “I Know I Believe In Nothing But It Is My Nothing”.

Love
Nicky, James and Sean.

Interesting stuff....

It's a new day, it's a new dawn, it's a new world, and I'm feeling good.

The real tincan

Mnemonic's post with a picture of a luxury Airstream prompted me to share this picture of mine. Not quite as fancy by a ton. but it was home to me for a few years and I still have it parked in Canada for cheap accomodation when I'm there.

(When I first got it, my brother asked what it was like to live in a tincan. Hence my online nickname .... and since I met my current wife online, I was Tinnie to her and remain so to her and her - now hers and my - kids. I've been Tinnie so long, sometimes I even forget my real name now)

All change...

I can't think why, but this rather wonderful little song has been going through my head this morning.

Hi-Fi Snock Got a Dime for the Jookbox

As a first attempt to post rather than comment, this might go all Titanic-iceberg, a bit Sarah Palin, or simply Rossbrand (incidentally, if 27000 Grauniad readers were to find something offensive in the coiffeured one's Saturday column, might he - hooray - resign or something).

Anyhow, it's Snocko's
Nice Eclectic Jookbox (if I've done the link right), featuring amongst others Down By the Zoo (Paul Gayten); Hillbilly Willy's Blues (Blind Willy McTell); Grandfather's Clock (The Court & Spark Band); Sweet Lucy (Cliff Starbuck of Ekoostik Hookah); You'll Lose a Good Thing (Julianne Frank of the Kieth Frank and the Swallow Family Band); Sweet Georgia Brown (Mr. Bones); and I'm Wild (Elwood Smock aka Michael Hurley).

Get A Head - travel broadens your mind...ou est le gremlin cette semaine?

By eckers like it wor raight parky ovver theer- ah tell thi. I'm aiming to post some moosick soon as soon as i've mastered this Podbean malarky, but until then it's a poser reliant on your own travelling experience i suppose, which is a bit exclusive (unless you google 'big gold head'- which is a bit cheating but probably what i'd do...); it's agrteat piece of sculpture and i really like the accepted norm now of placing art in prominent public places for all us plebs to appreciate for nowt..shame about the 'convoy cut' straggly bits at the back of his/her head...

Get On The Bus (or take a long walk) (or board the freedom train)

Ten treks that all happen to take place around the States. Not sure how large an electoral college this represents but it's certainly a hard campaign trail, and you'll have earned your chance for relaxation and reflection by the end of it. All the named tracks were nominated this week. As for identifying the unnamed 10th track, I'm afraid you're on yer jack jones.

EDIT: I didn't have it as an mp3 last night but I also wanted to 'Spill Tony Joe White's Aspen Colorado so I've now added it, newly peeled off my TJW Black & White LP, so excuse the fluff.

The Staple Singers - Long Walk To D.C.
Jim Croce - Walkin Back To Georgia
Judy Garland - The Trolley Song
Charles Mingus - Boogie Stop Shuffle
Bobbi Humphrey - Harlem River Drive
Judee Sill - There's A Rugged Road
The Last Poets - On The Subway
Jim Croce - I Got A Name
Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson - 95 South (All Of The Places We've Been)
...

Tony Joe White - Aspen Colorado

I know the nomination window had closed and the posts were getting longer and more loftily theoretical, and I also know I want to do a blog with some actual music on it here this week - but this is just a quick one: is anyone else a bit put out that this week's RR blog has been closed for further comment?

still travelling (second half of list)
