Festive 'Spill - Your No. 3's
As this became quite large in a hurry, thought it best to bring forward the release schedule to allow time to digest. Look for the "number two's" on Thursday and grand finale on Saturday (will try to post a little earlier in the day). Play order is by song title, but have hidden the names so, hopefully, we can keep these up for a while (right click will download & reveal for the curious). Thanks to all for taking part (Abahachi & Proudfoot will be joining us in the next installments). Enjoy:

Shoey...it may be overloaded with too many excellent tunes 'cos I cant get it to work on my computer....
"Posted by shoegazer at 3:51 AM" - Respect, shoey!
But...
"We are unable to play media on this page at this time. Refresh the page and try again." And again. And again and again.
I'm known for being a new media calamity zone, but this time I don't think it's me. Theories, rants? Anybody?
'Fraid I can't get anywhere with it either. Did have a brief moment of optimism, and then realised that it was playing Japanther's Not Not Fun tracks again.
Ooh, I didn't know it was going to be a quiz!! It didn't play for me this morning, but it is now. I can't even remember what my #3 was. Let's see if I recognize it.
Update: I can hear Steenbeck's choice (which is just plain excellent) - presumably because it's at the Ground Zero of the list? (I also get a pop-up telling me what it is, which may or may not be what was intended...).
If I click on anybody else's choice the software scrolls through their name, and the next four names, before telling me that it can't play (wording as above). Does it think that every item is one colossal long song...?
(PS. According to today's Grauniad, Davey Graham died yesterday... I'm not the best-qualified person to eulogise him, but you won't regret 7 minutes listening to this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=a9XkWbKBs80 - like the best films, it just gets more and more involving as it goes along...)
Sorry folks, Seems the folder default was private. Have reset so it should work now.
Well I can get it to play everything except mine and the gremlin's...
I've just started it up, fine so far.
A quick reaction: I've been sat here in a dimly-lit room playing the first 10 seconds or so of everybody's choices, and about 2/3rds of 'em have been giving me a late-night Peely-type "wtf is that...?" rush. I'll give them a proper listen-through tonight.
So far I've recognised Bon Iver, Santogold, MGMT (and my own synth-pop choice), plus at least 3 others that I know and can't place (Hot Chip?).
On the underdog principle, everybody's third choice is probably going to be more interesting than their second or first... who's going to prove me wrong?
I'm getting about half of the tunes, and doing very badly on the Name That Tune quiz re. the first few bars (mostly haven't listened as far as any signing, mind). All being well, I'll be able to give the whole lot a listen - currently, the sketchy medley of tracks that are playing and tracks that aren't all sound like one big Hot Chip track!
ShivSidecar - I think you're probably right about the third choices but we'll see...
Oh--I didn't do them in order of favorites, I did them chronologically. It's funny, but listening through and not really recognizing much, it all sounds, well, retro-ish. 80s maybe?
Not really meant to be a quiz, just trying to disguise our activities a little so we can keep these posts up for a while. I can e-mail the complete list over the weekend to all who took part & anyone else who want's it.
Good call on the disguising Shoey, we've had to take down a few posts recently under threat from Google.
Am now about to start listening! Excited!!
Darce - that Sigur Ros is very sad and yet strangely christmassy. Wow!
The Sigur Ros LP was one I never got round to getting this year, may have to now though!
Next!
Something completely different from Japanther - this list is so diverse already, and I'm only 4 songs in!
Cool tune, I'm having that!!
Froggy, is that Neon Neon? I loved "I Told Her On Alderaan" (an ejaydee recommendation I think....cheers ejaydee!! ) but haven't chased the LP up!
Gareth - what was that? ! It seemed so familiar, but i couldn't put my finger on it!!
Elderino!!! Love that tune - it's in my top ten for the year!! I think I 'Spilled the video way back when it first surfaced!!
John Hughes + shoegaze = loveliness all round really
Marco - nice bit o' Feist, thanks for that!!
And there's "...Alderaan" ! Woohoo!! Top hole!
Woah! Death Cab For Cutie may have finally made their way onto my radar!!! Cheers Toffee!
This playlist is blinding fun!!
ejay! CHOOON!!!
Greetings from the Lemsip-scented DsD Towers, and thanks, Blimpy.
Funnily enough Ara Batur doesn't appear to be any other SR-fan's top choice from the album, but I think your brief description absolutely nails it. My short summary would be "musical aloe vera for the sunburn on your soul", but as it's mid-December I think I like yours better!
Gotta go 'cause I'm too ill/tired now, but rest assured I for one will be turning this lot into a Festive 'Spill CD boxed set.
Best wishes all.
GF - lovely (and concise) song
TracyK - good choice, I have this on 7", i love how the chorus takes off
Steen - you are my hip-hop filter and for this i thank you. I think i remember this from a couple of months ago.
Bring on the 2s!!
Coming through loud and clear now - fantastic list. What good taste you all have...
Lemsip Max, I assume DsD?
Two sachets per mug, Toffee!
Just setting the No.3s playing again as I test DarceysSis' Christmas prezzie - can't believe I'm abandoning my principles to put a TV in my daughter's bedroom at the age of only 7. This is V2.0: number 1 had a couple of dead pixels on the screen - returning that was all I needed in a busy December ... not!
Bring on the Twos! Froggy's was Sebastien Tellier, Blimp, and your choon isn't too shabby either.
Oh how I love a flurry of Blimpy comments. I just downloaded your selection, McFLah.
And yes, you heard mine not too long ago. I'm telling you, if I loved something it was on the 'Spill. That's what it's all about.
Isaac just said we have the same ears.
This must be a nice defining cross-section of The-Year-in-Music, no? With our wide-ranging proclivities.
Shoegazer's selection of a song with the refrain "I wish there were more bad times" is BLOODY NOT what I wanted to hear when this soddin' telly is no good either - won't play any DVDs.
How the hell am I supposed to generate the time for another trip back to the shop? Getting angry now ... irises whitening ... shirt getting tighter ... skin going srangely greeAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!
Hmm..can't get anything from SaneShane to Frogprincess and Treefrogdemon to Tracyk to work....everything in between is fine.....well, not fine, bloody great! - all of it! a real eclectic mix - especially like Elderiono, Mnemonic Toffeeboy's tunes....
...anyone else still having problems?
@DsD Have this vision of you with a box of kleenex in a santa suit turning green trying to get the technology to behave. Sorry my tune isn't helping any.
@Japanther There is plenty of bandwidth & Boxtr seems to be behaving for once. Try clicking on the post title, to get it loaded in a new page & try again.
Oh wow, oh wow, oh WOW - I am soooo looking forward to listening to this the whole way through (which I probably won't be able to do before Christmas Eve, but still...)
Just quickly listening to the openings of each track before hustling the kids off to school, but the player refused gremlin and anything thereafter; HOWEVER, jumping down to steen and then climbing back up the list got it working again.
Blimpy, did I read correctly that Google have been complaining about posts on here????
GUTE BESSERUNG to DsD and all the other 'Spillers with The Cold (myself included)
Vaguely recovered from an excessive w/end to come back to an excess of tunes.. how cool is this.
(sorry GlassHalfEmpty, didn't make it to contact you Sunday.. I wasn't being let away that easily by my extra family)
What a bunch of tunes, can not wait for 2 and 1.
I don't think they'll be any more straight forward as I didn't do mine in order either... and I like the fact that out of the 13 I've got most wouldn't have been the choice off the albums they come from.
I await the next countdown.
Eek-a-mouse! This is brilliant.
I'm gutted that I missed the deadline but we are still on the road until the weekend and internet access has been worse than intermittent to say the least.
I had wanted to get full tracks off to Shoey but instead will have to make do with lodging a late, retrospective vote and making a solemn promise that I will listen to all these tunes once we are back in the bosom of family at the weekend.
The road is treating us well but I can't wait to catch up on the spill and already can't wait for numbers two and one!
Hope everyone is well and enjoying the season, one more question though:
How would people feel about trying to compile an official 'Spill end of year album list? We could all do top 5/10s and then compile a list via a point-scoring process? I'm happy to do it if people fancy (being as we now have a fortnight of downtime), or is it all just a bit too Nick Hornby? Opinions welcome either way. Until the weekend...
Is there any chance, for the benefit of those of us who haven't the faintest idea who 95% of these bands are, of a printed list at some point? Half-way through so far, not yet inclined to spend any actual money but certainly considering looking for some of these on last.fm.
Abahachi - you know that a right-click on the title will let you download a track to your pc, right? One of the joys of Boxtr, that helps make up for it's unpredictability. I know that everyone here will buy more of what they like.
I will e-mail my handy festive spreadsheet over the weekend to all who took part. Anyone else who wants it can e-mail me at shoemail@earthlink.net
I'll have to listen when I get the chance, next week probably.
Shame I was in such a miserable slump, or I'd have played the game too and come up with a few choons.
Carole - You can e-mail me your nominations if you like - and I will add them to Saturday's playlist.
Off to unleash round 2.
Carole - I want to hear some of your nominations!
Well, if I can pick things that aren't 2008 releases, I'll be OK.
Email heading to Shoey tonight...........
Wow, cannot say wow often enough! This is just fabulous: got as far as Mnemonic so far and there's been a long run of stuff that I've just been smitten with! You guys....
Didn't realise you were planning to do it like this Shoey, what a stroke of genius! Like a selection box for the ears!
Goodness, kalyr, I never thought I'd be downloading Marillion...although my former next door neighbour did play bagpipes on one of their albums...
This is like Christmas, but better.
Blimpy, the track is For Emma by Bon "Carriage Clock" Iver.
@Treefrogdemon - would that be Tony Halligan, who played Uilleann pipes on "Brave"?
