Due to my inbox being flooded with requests for this, I feel I must oblige. So, in no particular order, here's my top ten indie hotties:
Annie Hardy, the one woman potty-mouth shoegazeathon that is Giant Drag.
Obscure indie folkstress Rozi Plain.
Sophie Ellis Bextor was in an indie band before conquering the pop charts. I obviously stopped liking her once she became successful. I put most of her appeal down to the fact that I fancied her mum on Blue Peter when I was about 6.

Holy backfire, batman!!
The mother of them all: Kim Gordon!!!
I'll give you Zia..
But (very early in the morning on new years day tho it is - and therefore I shouldnt be attempting this) its interesting that it is most of these women's very 'indie-ness' which doesnt get me at all. Hoopy tights and attitude: the ultimate turn off - Discuss.
Sorry we cant agree on this Blimpy old chap - just one of those things. No offence.
And why have they miked up Zia McCabe's front bottom?
No no no no no.
Carrie Brownstein
Kim Gordon
Tanya Donnelly
Kristin Hersh
Corin Tucker
Wot? No prog ladies? ;)
I was trying to draw a distinction between "indie" and "prog" myself here.
Lots of lovely prog ladies, although the indie ones tend to be a bit more open about their sexuality.
Which is nice for a lesbitarian like me.
and of course I'm reluctant to think of people I know personally as "totty".
I'm with Carole's list. Zia's not at all pretty, she just known for taking her tops off a lot. Rrrreally girl power that.
And others you seem to have overlooked: Dubstar's Sarah Blackwood, Black Box Recorder's Sarah Nixey, St Etienne's Sarah Cracknell (what's with all these Sarahs?), Isobel Campbell, Salad's Marijne, Echobelly's Sonia Aurora Madan, Garbage's Shirley Manson.
I know this only intended as a bit of holiday fun but frankly, Blimpy, I find the whole idea of reducing talented female musicians to mere sex objects to be utterly un.. un... unmissable!
So, laydeez and gennermun, I give you Beth Ditto. And Kim and Kelley from the Breeders.
P.S. Surprised you omitted Holly Golightly from your list...
Kim Deal was bubbling under, she only missed out on the ten cos she looks like my auntie these days.
Good call on Holly Golightly though...
@tracyk - re Zia - yep, that's me rumbled.
(tho i have hung out with her and she's very nice and funny too)
@ blimpy - Wot, no Tracyanne Campbell??? Shame on you ...
And how about Nina Persson?
Or Tracy Thorn?
Victoria Bergsman?
Natalie Merchant?
I used to like Tanya Donelly too, but I she now remind me of my pal's fiancee - which freaks me out a bit.
D'oh!
Smacks head
Hope Sandoval
Could we add Amanda Palmer? Or is she too scary/auntie like?
Does Julianne Regan from All About Eve count? I always thought that she was quite adorable.
I can't leave this topic without mentioning Siouxsie Sioux, she probably isn't indie, but punks cool, non? I still have a poster of her on my bedroom wall where all the others have gone :-)
Of course!! Zooey Deschanel!!!
Happy New year Bethnoir - we had the same discussion about Siouxsie and agreed that even at the ripe old age of 52 she is still AMAZING in musical terms and also desirability oh yes...only she doesn't play any instruments...
Happy New Year to you too gremlinfc. I'm sure I've seen Siouxsie play a tambourine or maybe some bells now and them, but she's far more than a pretty face, I'm sure we agree!
Siouxsie is great, absolutely wonderful.
But she isn't indie, or mere "totty" either.
She is simply amazing.
Words fail me.
you're quite right CaroleBristol, she is beyond such meagre categorizations, the question is to be her or to be with her?
I'd settle for being with her myself, beth.
I imagine she'd be hard work, but probably worth it :-)
I probably shoulda done a playlist to go with this, innit?
Was it really a massive backfire?
Blimpfred. Not your post that was a backfire. My post was the backfire, from sometime down below there. But I can't remember, because it was so last year. This post was fine.
Ok, cool.
Whither Darce and his Claire Grogan nomination?
and his Sinead nomination?????
Personally I'm a little envious of the very attractive creativity and talent of MIA and Santigold.
I know, I know ... I've been slacking. I haven't even managed to listen to any of the Chicks Who Shred threads yet, which is right up my alley!
Back on topic, Clare was always a bit wee for me - I've always been attracted to girls, um, a bit bigger all over. Sinead, however ... *sigh!* She is my one MAJOR celeb crush, and has been now for over twenty years. I'm supposed to be going to bed, as I'm double-shifting all this week (a proper paying gig 0800-1530 in Halifax, then 1600-0000 every day at my new crappy 2nd job in Elland, home by 0030, shower & bed, up at 0620 to get the girls ready for school and off we go again - DO NOT expect me to appear on RR until Sunday!!! I'll be falling asleep in the pub with Gordon on Saturday night.) But now I'll have to watch the vid in my "Be Still My Beating Heart" 'Spill thread first . . .
Holy cow DsD! THAT'S SOME MENTAL schedule!!
is it too late to mention the other hotties. I refer of course to Kate Bush, Sonja Kristina Linwood of Curved Air, Skin, Tina Weymouth, L7, Bjork and Nana Maskouri
@green party - it's NEVER too late for hotness!
Kate Bush and Sonja Kristina are prog hotness, rather than indie, surely?
I really, really, really wanted to be Sonja Kristina when I was sixteen.
How persuasively can I argue that the Bangles were essentially indie at the time of their first album? The whole Paisley Underground thing?
@Aba - I'll buy that!!!
You would never guess from the stuff available on the Web that the vastly improved "obscure indie folkstress" Rozi Plain (along with Whalebone Polly) have come up with a form of "Future Folk" that even blows away great post-punk or dream pop acts. I love Souxsie, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Chameleons, Radiohead, The Verve and (when Mac's voice isn't shot) the Bunnymen, but Rozi Plain could blow all of them off the planet, and I have made an HD Dolby 5.1 film on Blu-Ray to prove it, which I'm hoping to get put on the BBC, the net is too common for something so great.
P.S. I'm not their manager, just a crazed fan! If it's the one thing you do in your life, see Rozi Plain or the others live, before they become so massive you have to camp outside a stadium for days, instead of enjoy them in tiny clubs and pubs. And get ALL their albums. Her new song "Wiggling" (not recorded yet) is incredible, as are "Common Ears", "Bathtimer" and "Rook Rook Crow" from the two albums she has already recorded.
As for Rachael Dadd and Kate Stables in Whalebone Polly, they are awesome as well. And I am not just saying this just because they are hot-they are thousands of times more talented than hot. Which makes them the greatest singer- songwriters ever to exist on the planet! On second thoughts I think I'll shut up about them in case I can't get a ticket.
Hi Anonymous - nice to hear from someone with such unbridled enthusiasm! Would you like to write about the performers you mentioned, and I'll publish it on this very website!
We have a huge readership, so it could help raise their profile.
I'm a big fan of Rozi, and Rachel Dadd also.
Send any submissions via the email in the sidebar. Cheers.
