Bouncing Round An Empty House

.
Look which squatters are moving in ...

.

DarceysDad passes the last cardboard box of LPs out of the door for ejaydee to put it in the removal wagon. He watches as Ed passes the heavy box up to gremlinfc, who says "Don't Drop'box, Frenchy!" as he takes it off him. Gremlin then flicks it nonchalantly up into the last bit of space on the pile. “Top corner: get in!” he cries, pulling the front of his Sheffield FC top up over his face. He then pulls the van shutter down from the inside, and Ed walks around to the passenger door, where he climbs in next to sonofwebcore. As tincanman grinds the gearbox into first (“Bloody manual box, ayh?”) and pulls away, the three of them wave at DsD and gordonimmel, who salute back from the porch. Inside the house, ToffeeBoy brushes the cobwebs off the front of his Aztec Camera T-shirt, and reaches three bottles out of the coolbox that Abahachi & CaroleBristol had filled up earlier, and sits down on the hall stairs.

As he wipes the melted ice off the outside of the bottle of Lovely Ginger Beer, he looks around him, at the now empty interior of No.1 Spillers Way, Bloggerville. He's not sad to leave town: since those bleedin' Google police moved in at the top of the hill, it hasn't been the same. This happy communal house that’s become a home, on the other hand ….

He runs his fingers over the nick in the banister that saneshane made (when he got over-boisterous with the flying monster steenbeck had sent the Z-boy), and blinks his moistening eyes rapidly.

“You getting all sad about leaving here, mate?” asks DsD as he opens a bottle of Sheppy’s. “Or has StripeyBrat been on the phone again about her child support payments?”

gordonimmel sighs as he opens the last bottle of ‘Spill ale. “Haven’t you had enough foot-in-mouth disease this month, Richie? Ignore him, TB.” But as he takes a long drink of Abahachi’s finest, there’s definitely a tear and a faraway look there too. The memory of trying to figure out how to explain the definition of ‘dond’ to debbym in German takes Gordon back, and his eye is inevitably drawn through the doorway to the music room, where he can see the jarringly unfaded rectangle of wallpaper, exposed now that nilpferd’s House Rules And Definitions poster has been taken off the wall.

A loud bang from behind them makes all three men jump. An unmistakable French/Geordie accent exclaims “Merde!” They look around to see frogprincess emerge from the kitchen holding a LeCreuset pan handle in each hand. Unfortunately there’s no pan left between the handles! “I’m afraid the leftover Pork Filet in Roquefort Sauce is off the menu, gents.”

“Never mind” calls TracyK, her voice muffled as she reaches into the back of a cupboard, “I’ve found a packet of Vesta Chow Mein that treefrogdemon’s forgotten to pack. Put the kettle on!”

As the boys play rock/scissors/paper for who has to tell Tracy not to bother, they’re distracted by TonNL coming in the front door. “The newsagent wasn’t very pleased at getting no notice to cancel the papers” he grins. “He asked what the hell he was supposed to do with 77 copies of today’s Grauniad! I’ve told him it was all double Dutch to me, and to put them on Brian Speng’s account …”

Their laughter almost drowns out the sound of a Jonathan Richman ringtone, but whilst Toffee looks quizzically at his mobile, sourpus walks down the stairs talking on his phone. “It’s Blimpy”, he says to the others, “He wants to know how long we’re going to be, only SatanKidneyPie has to hand in the keys for this place, and sign off the contract for the new place in Wordpreston by noon. He’s tried ringing Japanther to get SKP’s direct dial, but the little swine must’ve sloped off to that underground vinyl emporium again, because his mobile’s coming back as uncontactable.”

They all look at each other, as it dawns on them that this really is the end of a chapter, an era even. No-one wants to say it, but they all know it’s time to leave. So in a symbolic and emotional last act here, the first house they got together after fledging from their Guardian mother[ship], they go out into the garden to join Chris7572 & Mnemonic by the flowerbeds over the cats’ final resting places. Chris presses ‘Play – Shuffle – Repeat All’ on the 80gb iPod (the one with the broken case that goneforeign has loaded up with reggae, dub, jazz, every Nina Simone record he could find … and one other tune), and pushes it into the crevice under the deckboards of the patio. He plugs it into the extension cable that barbryn ran out from the house, and turns up the volume.

As they all turn and walk away towards the bus stop, a familiar refrain sounds gently from their now ex-home . . .

"All together now ..."

Trip-Hop Ping-Pong Sing-Song

This - I'm sure - doesn't really fit this week's RR topic, but for those who haven't heard it before, see what you think: is that percussion the sound of someone on the table tennis table in the studio back room, or what?!

;o)

Call me Mr. Slow, but . . .

I was searching around for any audio for the Quiet City / Paul Buchanan project that BarringtonWomble told me about over on the mothership, when I came across this, that I've never heard before.

Now I'm transfixed!

Beauty is in the Ear of the Beholder

My mobile phone's camera has unfortunately failed to do justice to Friday's spectacularly beautiful sunset; the pinks and oranges amongst the blue and against the silhouettes was breathtaking. But it was an obvious shoo-in for this post. :o)

***EDIT***
Lowgold's original of Beauty Dies Young added for Shane to compare

Fort Lauderdale - Beauty
Aynsley Lister - Beautiful (Keiana's Song)
Ian McNabb - Why Are The Beautiful So Sad?
Shack - Beautiful

No Deception Intended !!

SatanKidneyPie, a labelled disc of RRtunes, DarceysDad

For steenbeck, a picture of the mini-social. For tincanman, pictorial proof that we fulfilled his requirements to be allowed to call it a "mini-social". For SKP, my thanks for a very pleasant evening, and an advance apology for the gratuitous, erroneous, and probably libellous innuendo that follows -

So let's see, the RR topic this week is 'Deception', and DsD posts a thread featuring a picture of some footballers and a lawyer! Hmmmmm ...

I'm off to bed now, but as I have posted, and haven't done a 'Spill Playlist for a while, I will return to this thread later to add some deceptively good tunes, IMNSHO!

Just these for now ...

500 Miles To Memphis - Don't Mislead
The Zutons - Put A Little Aside
WGC - The Great Deceiver
2 Tribes - What Do They Want From Us?

Well, HE asked for it ...!

Obviously, Ton, this is not the version that my daughters watch at 7am on schoolday mornings. But you get the picture, right?

Well, SHE started it ...!

I can't believe I'm up at after one in the morning, scanning and uploading a 23 year-old picture of an empty room! But there it is, my haven of peace & tranquility away from the communal biohazard rooms in the house Gordon & I shared at Uni. Boring huh? But it does show off that much-missed poster.

What? What's that you say? You want to see evidence of the dark side? Oh, OK then, hang on . . .

Yes, that's me, with the not-at-all-missed Donna on my lap, as we've also been talking cats this evening.

And I suppose if I'm going to play all my cards in one trick, we may as well have some music: here's a live version of Rickie Lee Jones' Easy Money, boogied up & boogied to all those years ago, as mentioned by me down on the EOTWQs. Please forgive the wobbliness; it's the ancient cassette tape, not the band's playing -

Be Still My Beating Heart #3

Sorry, couldn't resist. One thing, though ... I don't know the original. Not unusual, given my aversion to his voice, but I would quite like to know what Dylan fans think of this.

It's A White Christmas !!!!!

I thought I'd better respond more fully to you all, as Christmas arrives. I was going to post a thread called "HE'S BEEN, HE'S BEEN!!" as I've just taken the picture of the presents under the tree, but having uploaded the pics from my camera, they're rubbish, so I'll have to go and re-take them before I go to bed. Instead, here's one of Darcey and her mates playing out on Christmas Eve, for no other good reason than (i) I was reminded of an old photo of the then-toddler Darcey by barbryn's post; and (ii) I'm quite pleased with the ones I took today. Jess, by the way, was just out of shot, building a snowman bigger than she is! Bless!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE.

Covered in snow, and under cover of darkness

Snow And Lights

The tree we have outside that's really outgrown its pot. Picked as a 12" sapling in Scotland some years ago, I now can't even reach the top with the stepladders! Sorry about the light quality of the photo; DarceysMam has taken the good camera to Granny's house. (The snow isn't really that orange! I might redo this in daylight.)

Anyhow, this is a notice, of sorts. Training/consultancy work has been so scarce in '09, I've had to get an additional, employed job, starting tonight, to avoid serious damage to the savings. As that's the midnight shift (so that I can at least try to keep my business going during the daytime), I won't be joining in the MFF any more on the mothership, and my weekday blogging is going to be restricted to sneaking the odd 20mins in a morning if it is my wife's turn to take the girls to school.

I haven't had to jump-on-command (other than to DsMam, natch) for a decade or so; this could turn sour very quickly!!! Wish me luck. Of course, if anyone knows a company in need of any Industrial H&S training, you could save me the ignominy ... distance no object, as Abahachi already knows.

An old, er, "friend?" topically revisited as RATM hit number one!

Apart from Danny Murphy inspiring Fulham to stuff the Mancs, this is the only bit of good news I've had all weekend.

A further bit of fun: is it just me, or if you take a black marker pen to the face, isn't it possible to make the resemblence uncanny?

;o)

FIFTY not out! ... DsD raises his bat to the pavilion

I thought I'd post this here, because a 'Spill/RR friend - who shall remain anonymous (but look up this thread's subject number in the Periodic Table for a clue) - thought I was being a little less than humble over on the mothership last week. So ...

I HIT FIFTY A-LISTERS!

... AND PASSED THE MIGHTY J.A.P. IN THE PROCESS!

... AND EVEN PREDICTED THE EXACT PLACE THAT LYLE LOVETT SHOULD TAKE IN THE MEAT TEN, WITH THE EXACT LOGIC THAT OUR GURU USED IN HIS PAPER COLUMN.

But I'll save you all a bum-numbing "Thank you to my agent, banker, chiropodist, dog...." speech, 'cause it's almost time to unleash yet more guitar riffs on an unsuspecting PaulMac in the Impressive Intros topic.
See you all over there.

Desperately late ...

DarceysDad, Dave Harding, DaddyPig, Willy Vlautin
(with thanks to RF guitar player Dan Eccles for taking the photo, and drummer Sean Oldham for manning the merchandise stall whilst I buggered about setting this up!)

The picture is indeed from September's Richmond Fontaine gig at The New Roscoe in Leeds. But what with one thing and another, I never got round to doing a review write-up. Too late for that now, I suppose, but the band's natural fit for this week's Readers Recommend Desperate Songs topic gave me an excuse to approach it from a different angle.

Willy Vlautin strikes a chord with me specifically because he writes about the sorts of character that I very, very nearly became. But for one fortuitous choice previously recalled in goneforeign's June Forks In The Road EOTWQ, I would (OK, could) have been an unqualified, disaffected drifter blindly walking a lifechoice fencetop 'twixt working-class nobody and underclass loser; the only difference between me and Willy's desperadoes is that I'd have been northwest UK instead of northwest USA.

I'm not going to repeat the songs I nominated on RR, as I did find links for those, but to prove I could have easily nominated twenty more, here's another couple of favourites that fit the Desperation topic. I've tried to find some of the more uptempo garage-y tunes to counter the softer ones I nominated on the mothership:

Concussion
Pinkerton
43

If I get a chance tomorrow, I might add a couple of other (non-RF) desperate songs, because I have loved this topic. Of course that means I'm setting myself up for another fall(out) with our Guru if PaulMac's choice doesn't include at least a DsD brace!!
(It's finally GOTTA BE Lorraine Ellison's week, hasn't it?)

RR Northern Social CD Compilations: an update

I have so much music still to listen to, I've employed a crack team of hip young dudes to do it for me ...

Seriously, I know I'm not the only one still with discs to listen to, so I thought I would start another thread, so we can all keep our promises of feedback on the front page of The 'Spill.

The only comments I have ready to add to the previous thread are in as first response below.

For comments already made last month, go here.

I should be so lucky ... (apart from the Lambrini!)

Take two daughters to one Church FĂȘte, put in five pound coins to each right hand, point at the tombolas, and watch them simmer for around 90 minutes. The result?

.

Add to that the three 2010 church diaries; a large pitstop full of cakes, biscuits, soup&rolls and drinks; and as of ten minutes ago, ANOTHER carrierbag-full of prizes hand-delivered to DarceysSis for winning the Tie'N'Scarf quiz, and I think you can safely say we did OK for total outlay of under fifteen quid!!

So who wants to let my girls pick their lottery numbers for next week? They won't charge you much ...

And here's a tune appropriate for the post, but also as an antidote to all the vim over on the mothership.

Au Revoir Simone - The Lucky Ones

Well if we're gonna talk Music On Sesame Street ...

I found this one day when me & Darcey were pfaffing around on the PC. Darce absolutely loved this, so much so I put the original on my mp3 player and her CD-R compilation for the car. But now that she's got used to the proper version of the song, she won't watch this any more because "that lady gets the words wrong"!

I'm gutted!!

RR Northern Social CD Compilations

Back row (l-r): gordonimmel, gremlinfc, DarceysDad, sonofwebcore, exodus, TracyK
Needing, sorry, nicking the sofa: Mnemonic, tarxien
Kneeling: DaddyPig, AliMunday, the extremely tall tincanman

The more formal team picture from Saturday night's shindig. I can't speak for anyone else, but I had a whale of a time, so thank you all. Apologies to our more sensitive readers about gremlin's hand; I did tell him not to pick his spots, but the camera's timer went off, so ... tough!

Anyway, the other reason for posting this - there was the customary exchange of compilation CD-Rs, and the usual promises to listen and feedback. Given that I was in a nostalgic heavy rock mood when I compiled mine, I'm not actually going to hold anyone to that promise! All I ask is that everyone attending, or with access to the 'Box (hint, hint!) listens to Track No.19 on mine, and forgives the fact that it was a live recording from a pub gig, and the source cassette is twenty-three years old.

So, any feedback welcome . . .

Solo ... it's off the radar and disappeared without trace!

Jumpin' The Gunn - Shades Of Blue

.
Does anyone know where I can go and buy a couple of extra days to sneak into this weekend's RR nomination window? This "Songs With Super Solos" topic is almost certainly my favourite in over three years of blogging on GU, yet I've barely scratched the surface of the pool of songs I could easily recommend. Some are well-known enough that they don't really need any further justification, such as Thin Lizzy's Still In Love With You, and Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird (which had 23 'Recommend?' clicks the last time I looked - a DsD record). Others, like Jumpin' The Gunn's Shades Of Blue, are criminally unknown.

The above two people - guitarist Andy Gunn and vocalist Vikki Kitson - were part of a VERY young band spotted by the head of Virgin imprint PointBlank Records whilst visiting his mother in Inverness. Next thing they knew, they were on a plane to Memphis, and recording the album named after this song. Vikki was JUST SIXTEEN, FFS !!!

I saw them perform on a late-night TV show hosted by Eddi Reader shortly thereafter, and as this was right at the height of my HMV-£50-Man phase, I bought the CD. I've been wearing it out ever since.

RR Socialisers with my (I think) Mood Indigo compilation already have it, but I'm determined to get PaulMac to at least listen to this, as well as continuing to spread the word, so figure I have no choice but to 'Spill it and then link over here from the mothership.

This is 8 minutes of blues heaven. There's not necessarily anything ground-breaking in the songwriting, but the execution is just about perfect. In particular, that solo does EVERYTHING you could ever want of an electric blues tune.

If you've heard this before, please go over yonder and dond'er. If you haven't, lie back, enjoy, and then go over yonder and dond'er!

These days, Vikki is apparently out of the business and happily domesticated, Andy Gunn has got a little more acoustic and parochial: go here for a listen.

Blast From The Past #1 - 1987 : Somebodys Brother

.

5 students, 1 house: from left to right there are three bloggers, then two musicians -
RR-registered but never-commented PurplePasty, gordonimmel, DarceysDad, Andy, Mikey

Ah, the student days! Four years of pub lunches, beery evenings, gigs, scuzzy clubs, parties - often all on the same day! Grotty houses, jealously-guarded coffee stashes, health-hazard kitchens, more coffee, Neighbours & Blockbusters on the telly, cheap circuit-training or a swim just to get a free hot shower, laundry once a fortnight, yet more coffee to fuel those cod-philosophising all-nighters . . . and I'm sure there was something else too: Gordon?

gordonimmel: "*SIGH!* Studying, Richie, studying!"
DsD: Oh no no no, never that!
gi: "[wearily] And that's why you and Andy failed, and we didn't!"

That's it! The mention of Andy reminded me: SOMEBODYS BROTHER.

Originally from Sunderland, the pub-gig level band of that name had moved to Bradford in the early 80s, and were playing the sort of places that meant we were bound to run into them. To cut a long story short, they were looking for a keyboard player, and got together with mine & Gordon's aforementioned housemate. Shortly thereafter, they needed a new bass player too, and so joined another resident of our fondly-remembered terraced home, who we'll call Mikey.

Playing predominantly Dylan/The Band, Little Feat, Grateful Dead covers, Somebodys Brother (lazily but deliberately missing the apostrophe) were a typical small-time band: perfectly-competent players, but not a lot of ambition. Singer/guitarist Denny Austin could write, and had an OK singing voice made distinctive by that Mackem accent; guitarist Vince Deary had a lovely blues feel to his playing, but hey-ho, they weren't even setting Bradford alight at this point.

But then two things happened fairly simultaneously - they started to play more of their own songs, and they acquired some extra players. Whilst part-timers Brett (congas/percussion) and Tony (aka "Shipwreck", sax) brought some variety, singer Carol Neen was just awesome: equal parts sassy&steel, and WOW, what a voice!

Fairly disciplined rehearsing (a lot of which was at our house), persistent gigging (that was hindered only marginally by having yours truly as the usual van driver / technically-clueless roadie), and a little bit of luck raised the band's profile to the point where they were getting heard about as far away as London.

Replacing Mikey (who, on leaving Uni, buggered off to the US) with local ace bass player Cecil Zinyuku (who had then just had another daughter, Chenai: ring any bells, X-Factor watchers?), the quality, profile, and indeed sound of the band all changed for the better yet again.

They got some better management, better transport (I got sacked, much to my relief!), and funding for a single, the 3-track, 7", beautifully-sleeved So Damned True EP.

As well as the title track, there were two other songs - Soweto and It's Not For Long - both of which have remained DsD faves ever since, and have been pointlessly recommended on the mothership for various topics.
Now it is fair to say that Soweto hasn't stood the test of time very well. The lyrics betray the apartheid-era age of the song, and fairly amateur production leaves Andy's keyboards too far back in the mix. The latter issue in particular robs the song of much of the power and danceability that made it a live favourite, But I still love it, AND it DID get played by John Peel. Ach, judge for yourselves:

Somebodys Brother - Soweto

But It's Not For Long still tugs at the heart strings. It may well be that I have a particular reason for saying that - I was engaged at the time to someone who lived 150 miles away - but I am absolutely overjoyed that I now have this digitally, thanks to borrowing Gordon's Ion deck. Not my usual style, I'm sure you'll agree, but see what you think.
For what it's worth, this is the one song in my entire 50,000+ collection that I am least likely to accept criticism of, so be careful what you choose to say to me!

Sadly, soon afterwards it all fell apart. Vince left, all their gear got nicked from one of Bradford's venues, they got money troubles (including getting stiffed after a support slot for Desmond Dekker), Carol left to find fame and fortune in London (she has a MySpace page, if you're interested). Oh the band continued, into this millennium in fact, still with Andy (now Company Secretary for one of Bradford's biggest employers) on keyboards, but it's never been the same.
What could have been . . .

I'm left with just two copies of the vinyl EP, one of the follow-up cassette Sunderland EP, various live recordings, some photos, and a lot of fond memories!
:o)
