Mara and Sandra once got me a fantastic cookbook/scrapbook of recipes and reminiscences taken from Frida's diaries, called Frida's Fiestas.
It's arranged according to the main Mexican festivals, with all the things she used to cook for various events throughout the year, and diary entries plus descriptions of how the actual meals were celebrated. The chocolate-chicken mole is irresistable. I haven't had time for some of the more exotic ones, unfortunately, as most of them take half a day.

I've got that book too, nilpferd - people tend to give me Frida books (when they've run out of frogs, that is).

Frida and great music. What more could I ask for? Thanks Tfd! (Oh, and I've got that book too!)

Just had a chance to listen, particularly liked the Mary Gauthier song- fine lyrics, especially the line
I stumbled towards your elegance, I tumbled, wide awake, into a dream..

I've tried to make Mole a bunch of times, but it's never turned out very good. There's a mexican store around the corner with rows upon rows of different kinds of dried hot pepper. They always laugh at me a little when I try to figure out which ones to buy.

I use tinned chipotles, which I buy in Texas, for many Mexican dishes. They're great - I liquidise them with a little tomato, to make them runny enough, and then freeze the resultant paste in little tubs.

Luckily I'm off to Tx in 2 weeks, because I've just run out of my magic chilli mixture.

I had to tone it down a bit, otherwise Mara wouldn't have eaten it. But I'm looking forward to expanding the chilli part of our cuisine soon...
