De Maio Weekend? You could say that I guess, although neither of Caetano or VW came up with that guitar sound first, not that it matters too much anyway.
Some lovely sounds there, especially Dans Mon Ile and 13 de Maio. The latter reminds me of some of Marc Ribot's work with los Cubanos Postizos. I can almost forget it's minus 8 outside. I would have donded these if the blog was still up.
Enjoyed these enormously, but also wanted to winge about the fact that they've closed the blog early again, after all their promises to learn the lesson from last time...
Heehee, I sent a comment to the GU asking them to reopen and got this message...
Dear steenbeck,
I'm afraid I'm not allowed to do that as it could set a precedent on other blogs. However, could you not use the Overspill blog (http://readersrecommend.blogspot.com/)? I don't use it myself, but I believe that's more or less what it's there for. I apologise for the inconvenience of having to close comments, but I'm sure you appreciate the reaosns it's not possible to do it.
On another topic, I am an occasional contributor to the Readers Recommend threads (under a different identity), and noticed that you among others were complaining about the failure to post the A list online. This is the result of negligence on the part of the uploaders. I've alerted the appropriate people and updated the uploaders' instructions, so hopefully this will not happen again.
Well, I do feel bad that he thought I was complaining, and I wonder what name he contributes under. But mostly, I thought it was funny that the 'Spill was like a drug..."I don't use it, but if you must..."
Hello everyone - was off computer yesterday so only just caught up with this - obviously the techie team saw DarceysDad was back and thought: quick, close the blog! Just joking Dsd! From what I remember from when this happened last time, there is a tag that has to be attached to the blog when it is uploaded to keep it open all week, and if the person in charge of uploading forgets to put that tag on (they have to add quite a few) then it will close early. I'm now very intrigued by the identity of the moderator who occasionally contributes... Apart from that, wanted to add for Abahachi: yes, your assessment of my character is spot on, and I fully expect to have some kind of nervous breakdown when the kids hit teenagerdom. Woo-hoo, can't wait, etc. Anyway, I'm horrifically behind this week, so better crack on, but thanks to all for a rousing read as usual x
Thanks as ever, Maddy, for the demystification. Having seen the film City of Ember the other day, in which school leavers are randomly assigned the jobs they will keep for the rest of their lives, all geared towards supporting the machine that generates their entire world, I now have an image of a callow steampunk character assigned the job of blog-tagger, momentarily distracted by adolescent yearnings for the angular charms of Saoirse Ronan as she runs past, and allowing the RR tag to drop from his quivering hands. So I'm holding onto that image as it makes me feel much better about the whole thing.
The mystery moderator showing up on the blog like a plain-clothes priest is quite another point of interest, mind. It's a disincentive to give him a hard time, knowing he's a fellow traveller, although the idea that correcting a mistake sets an unwanted precedent is surely gobbledigook, especially as the chances of young Saoirse sprinting past again and meeting the dozy emo blog-tagger's gaze with her permanently startled eyes at just that moment are pretty slim.
@ tincanman - What d'you mean I'm Alan? You mean, let me understand this cause, y'know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm Alan how? I mean Alan like I'm a ComMod, I moderate you? I make you abide by a code of conduct , I'm here to fuckin' regulate you? What do you mean Alan - Alan how? How am I Alan?
@ May1366 Well...... I have this theory that by participating in this, we all exchange molecules at some sub-atomic or metaphysical or something level, and thats how the social mores of the group develop. We all simultaneously both are and are not each other. As for you regulating me, can I pretend to be tied up first?
Seriously everyone, go back and read this entire raft of responses with a feigned ignorance of its context. Any stranger overhearing this conversation is going to give us a wide berth and start muttering about flippin'druggies, but somehow, to me (us?) it all makes perfect sense, and I can't read it without smiling.
Less than 36 hours to go before my personal mothership relaunch!!
This whole meandering pontificating (is that when the Pope thinks?) reminds me of an obscure Traffic track which I really must find on Utube and post the link for us all ..... oh wait, and pay attention May1366, if we were on the other side we'd feel obliged to throw in the odd musical reference but WE'RE NOT BECAUSE THE &%$^£'s CUT US OFF.
Not that it matters to any of us.
take or leave the place, we could
really
who needs it
I mean, them with their fancy ..... OK, will now join Dsd on his countdown. x - 32:45:37.00006
You can try to delete all you like, Mr Smith, or Evans or whatever you go by when you are "moderating" your community, but you will never defeat Neo McFlah !!
now then; i'm in charge of blog admin, and have taken the executive and 1AM pissed decision to delete the whole blog. i mean, quite frankly, what with google deleting every other post we put up (fuck the DMCA, by the way) and other things besides. it's probably best for all concerned if we just walk away and forget that any of this ever happened.
I have no idea from the bare words on screen if you're serious or not.
I haven't volunteered for Administrator help because (i) I wouldn't have a clue what I was doing, and (ii) I struggle for the time to contribute let alone help.
BUT...
I do understand the frustrations of us being policed by jackbooted no-marks. One of my friends actually does some of that work for Google, and has been co-incidentally telling me about what he does.
If it is all getting too much, being constantly bombarded with threats etc., then calling it quits is perfectly sensible, and you would have my full support.
The 'Spill's raison d'etre (sorry, no character map available for accents on this computer access) is as light relief amongst friends, and none of us wish grief on each other. That's why I quit RR in the first place, because the enjoyment was outweighed by the techie grief&stress incurred.
But let's not go without one last glorious last stand - if you ARE potentially serious, let's at least discuss how best to point the fingers and shout blame loudly at those who would be the cause of our demise.
A-a-a-an-n-d of course if you're not serious, and it was just the wine 'n' whisky talking, then ignore all of the above !!!
@Mnemonic et al: Alan Evans made a comment on the 'best album' blog last night that I am 'CiF's resident Deadhead'. He may be a particularly observant blogger but more likely he is the moderator in question. This is a little disturbing for me as he appears to be knowledgeable in the Dead arena and even has a favourite Dead live album!
I was just joshing about deleting the blog, although my point about the DMCA thing stands. The DMCA have been persecuting bloggers of late, sometimes for putting up mp3s that were given away free by bands/labels.
Luckily we've only had 3 takedown notices, which has resulted in us deleting a few posts (before google could delete them themselves).
Quite a few respectable blogs have moved to self publishing as a result of DMCA harrassment.
The ironic thing is, between all 62 registered Spillers, we probably throw more money at the record industry than 100,000 (non music geeks) combined - a figure that has no doubt gone up as a result of the 'Spill bringing to light all the weird and wonderful musics wot exist in this world.
(No hangover for me, abahachi!! god only knows why....)
Speng will be moderating the blog again for the next 6 years, as of Saturday, so that'll be something to look forward to....(kidding....)
I contemplated, for at least thirty seconds, asking everyone to send me figures for (i) amount spent on music in 2008; (ii) amount spent on music in each of previous five years; (iii) estimate for amount of time spent listening to new music, viewing new websites etc. as a result of recommendations on here. I could then produce a full economic analysis of the impact of the 'Spill on the music industry, which I strongly suspect would confirm Blimpy's hunch. But unfortunately I do have work to do in the next week...
My Pseudo Wife would divorce me before we've even got married if we worked out how much I spend on music...
we would be able to afford a bigger house... the only reason we would need a bigger house is my music collection...
The only reason I'm in the house listening to music is.. we settled down and had a kid together.. no need to be out spending money on lose beer, expensive women, flat drugs and shit bands. (that might not be the right order) Quids in all round I say... I got her, she put up with me, little un gets to watch vinyl spin round, and indie record labels survive..
oh joy to the SPILL and all who post mp3 for me to search out and purchase.
Does "money spent on music" include what I spend on train tickets and dodgy B&Bs which often exceeds the cost of the the actual gig by orders of magnitude.
My record was 75 quid for a Travelodge in York for a gig that was 7 quid on the door.
Well, yes, I think we ought to consider our contribution to the wider economy as well as specifically to the music industry - although that may mean we need to factor in lost productivity due to spending time on the web rather than getting on with work.
.. and I've just spent £71 on train tickets for the two Panic Room gigs in Swansea and London at the end of the month. One is £6 on the door, the other one I've already paid for as it's a rescheduled gig from the one where the power failed last April.

Me Too! Still liked Zumbi, and I loved Rap da Felicidade and 13 De Maio. Sounded a bit South African? Oh--that's what Blimpy was saying, wasn't it?
Enjoyed these enormously, but also wanted to winge about the fact that they've closed the blog early again, after all their promises to learn the lesson from last time...
in my never ending covers search in reference to 13 De Maio
did you ever see/hear this: Caetano Veloso?
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=e2aDlFUFEWU
Yep, that was one of the better ones in that covers album.

But I never never complained about the a-list, cause I can always find it. So silly
Also, he's not said why it was closed in the first place.
And it's nothing to do with their standard time limit because older blogs are still open for comment.
Reckon we should follow steenback's example and all send them an email.
Great tunes, by the way, ejaydee - not ignoring the post itself!
Well, I do feel bad that he thought I was complaining, and I wonder what name he contributes under. But mostly, I thought it was funny that the 'Spill was like a drug..."I don't use it, but if you must..."
In any case, this has happened before, hasn't it? and didn't Maddy sort it?

hmm, may1366, i notice you used a vowel in your post and so did this mystery alan.
coincidence?
hmmmm
I wonder if he's the same ComMod that popped up a year or so ago. No worries May about the music, I'm only in this for the comments anyway.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
No, I'm the Moderator.
I'm Spartacus, btw.

Stop bustin' balls, Joe!
Maybe the Moderator is Speng himself (or herself)... don't labour the point Stan ...
I wonder about you sometimes, ejaydee. I think you could fold under questioning.

tincanman - this theory of yours...that's the idea behind the latest advertising campaign for Orange, isn't it?
@may1366
Dunno, I've been citrus intolerant since spending an hour in a phone shop trying to figure out their dolphin vs whale vs herring price plans.
And to think the Grauniad could have been playing host to this surrealist badinage if it wasn't for their fascist practices. As Babs sang:
May the light
Of this flickering monitor
Illuminate the night the way
Your Readers Recommend blog illuminates my soul.
Alan, can you hear me?
Alan, can you see me?
Alan, can you find me on the 'Spill?
(In fake drunken voice:)
Ijush luv youselot, yunno!

Cheers all.
Everyone is everybody else, as Barclay James Harvest put it.
Which is why they couldn't just pick the one name and stick with that.
Excahanging molecules? like the policeman and the bicycle, you mean?
Well, it looks like DsD isn't the only one returning to the blog. Check out JAP's new year music resolutions.

As far as I can remember, I always wanted to be a 'Spiller.
Can someone tell me where the delete post button is?
You only get the delete button if you use a proper Blogger account sign in. So this comment DOESN'T merit that option ...
... but this one does, because I signed in. (Note different colour to name).
25h42m and counting, btw !
Trouble is, Friday's work start time got moved today to 0600hrs: I'm going to be setting the alarm for 0415hrs!!
:o(
Over on the concept album blog, there's a Guardian staffer called Alan Evans blogging away. Could this be our moderator?
That's the name from the e-mail.
This whole thread has to be deleted, as it does not meet our community standards, but I still can't find my delete button.
You can try to delete all you like, Mr Smith, or Evans or whatever you go by when you are "moderating" your community, but you will never defeat Neo McFlah !!

k thanx bye
And how's your head this morning?

To quote Kent Brockman...Argle Bargle or Fooforaw? You decide.
Have they really asked us to delete more posts? Is there a pattern?
BLimpy, please don't delete us, but if you'd like a week or two vacation at full salary, we'll discuss it with the board of directors.
I have to stick up for the stopping of RR early this week as Shiv has gone and killed NUMBER 6.. Patrick McGoohan R.I.P.
(there can not be any more if this curse)
I can't believe there were only 17 episodes of The Prisoner...but the Grauniad says so so it must be true.
@Blimpy
Serious question - Do we need to stop putting up the MP3's?? Is that what's causing all the trouble?
Yeah let us know Blimpy, surely we can find a way around it.
And Steenbeck, there's a new Mos Def song on Kanye's blog.
@TFD
yep only 17 episodes of the Prisoner...
and I could probably bore the entire population for 17 days each ... per episode!!
glad it was on before the days of the internet.. Six of one club did enough to keep up the interest......
Hey, he's got a whole new album coming out! How could I not know that? And it sounds goooood. Thank you--something to look forward to.
