Ah, MC Solaar... This song was almost considered a novelty record at the time. At one point he was the darling of French hip Hop. This is one where I heard the original much much later than the sample. Oh and I asked you about some sample sets on the mothership which aren't available anymore, if you do have them could you put them in dropbox please?
Speaking of which, this poses the question, when you sample a "controversial" song, can you make a good song out of it? http://hiphopisread.blogspot.com/2007/08/sample-example-toto-nas-xzibit-ja-rule.html Watch out Blimpy! Hmmm...
Two great tracks Steen, both new to me. I only have a few MC Solaar tracks, from Jazzmatazz, and the Rebirth of Cool series.. I'll dropbox Caroline, a different mix to the one available on the Tube.
Ejaydee, does this work for you? I'm downloading it now, so if for some reason you can't get it to work I'll put it in dropbox... http://kevinnottingham.com/myblog/2008/05/27/kanye-west-original-samples-collection/
Thanks, Nilpferd. I'm still loving Le Bien, Le Mal, and Lounigin is amazing--that's really Byrd playing, no? And I like the Nas Miles Davis, as well, think I forgot to mention that.
I think I like hearing hip hop in a language I'm not familiar with because the words become part of the music--more about sound than meaning. And French is fun/frustrating, because I studied it, so if I listened, I should get some of it.
yep, GURU got Byrd on board for Jazzmatazz, he's also doing the voiceover, as well as playing live on the track. You can see him on Youtube. Re MC Solaar, that's exactly how I feel- his delivery seems very onomatopaeic and in counterpart to the rhythm- a bit like The Roots rappers, who also have a very good way with the sound of words, I think. Not sure how much French GURU understands, though- in Le Bien, le mal there's a nice piece when MC Solaar says "OK Man, Tu's explique" and GURU says "Yeaaahh. My Man Solaar." um- GURU, that was like, a handover, you know?
Ejaydee, I'm sorry, I don't have it. I've looked about a bit, but they've done a very thorough job of getting rid of all links. I found one that has 4 samples from College Dropout. I like a sample-searching challenge, though, so I'll see what I can find.
And a post on French hip hop would be greatly appreciated.
I can't believe there are three (3!) songs that sample Toto's Africa!!!! (Now where did Blimpy get to?) Did you watch the Ja Rule video? Lots and lots of black leather. Lots. As a commenter said, "It's so cheesy it hurts to watch it." I do like the Nas track, though. I'm tempted to make a playlist of hip hop songs that sample cheesy, unlikely songs and make it work.å
Nilpferd, thanks for Caroline. I love the...I'm so bad at talking about instrumentation. Bass, definitely. xylophone? (no, right?) organ?--Hey--there's another Cymande sample (this is a rastafarian folk song dedicated to the world's first hippy) no? I love that Cymande song.

Ahem, I meant curiosity, of course. Sigh.

Thanks Steenbeck I didn't have that set, but I was looking for the ones for College Dropout and Late Registration, which are now gone from KN.
About French hip hop, I should do a post, as long as the videos are still on youtube.
