Glad you liked the Drones - a great band & great album IMHO. A little more on the margins, suspect Shane & JP may care for it, but anticipate rolling of eyes & polite silence from most of the rest of the regulars.
I know what you mean, Steen. I think dropbox has had the unintended consequence of distracting from the 'Spill a little - I've not gotten round to a lot of stuff on here lately. Dropbox is a great tool, if a little impersonal, & I doubt it is possible to listen to everything.
I agree Dropbox is best as a behind the scenes tool Shoey, whereas the Spill is where we share um, you know, feelings and stuff. I like that people can listen to as much or as little of the week's noms as they want, but it's meant to complement and support the Spill. It'll never replace it.
I wasn't that keen on The Drones. I've seen them live a couple of times and not been too impressed but I really like this month's album.
I'm feeling overwhelmed with music as well and thinking that I never get to hear my own stuff anymore. Contemplating a moratorium on all new music for a while (I know I won't keep to it) and a possible cull of CDs I'm never going to listen to again.
That last paragraph, Mnemonic, is almost exactly the text of the last conversation gordonimmel & I had on the subject.
The Florida holiday (which is why I never caught up with Shoey's Feb Album Of The Month thread) restricted my listening to whatever was on my mp3 player. Even that limited 500+ song collection was enough to make me realise - I've been getting so eager to please others [by listening to their choices] lately, that I've been neglecting myself, as it were. So I think I'm going to have a "me" period for a bit.
I'm still grateful for, and using, Dropbox (just copying over SxSW-GHI as I type), but when I get something that doesn't grab me, it's going to get shunted off the player rather more ruthlessly than normal.
Um, the cut attached to this thread has suffered that fate I'm afraid, Shoey.
On the other hand it doesn't mean I won't return at a later date to stuff. For example, I'm never going to have a CD cull; it just isn't in my nature. I learnt my lesson wa-a-ay back, seeing how much some of the records I cleared out in my teen years are now worth!
But here's the rub: it's my turn for Album Of The Week next week ... can I really expect anyone to give ANY time to the LP I choose if I've gone all "la-la-la-not-listening" in the meantime?
Conflicted? Me? Not a bit of i...OK yes I am.
Now then: drink, paperwork backlog and RR MFF, or some quality hours in bed ahead of another busy day tomorrow?
There was a book about 10 years ago when the www thing was starting to explode called Information Anxiety, about the pressure of feeling you have to be on top of every new thing now that it is so readily available. And its true - you learn what a podcast is and next thing you've subscribed to 30, then get frustrated because you can't possibly listen to them all. Or you subscribe to 50 RSS feeds. Or try to listen to every RR nom. After the initial rush, reality intrudes and you settle into a manageable level of consumption. I read a great quote once (or made it up, I can never remember if I was smart in another lifetime) to the effect that technology makes the library bigger, which is great, but that doesn't mean you have to take every book out at once.
I realized as I was waiting for the kettle to boil (no, I didn't peek) that my last post sounded preachy. It wasn't supposed to. I am THE WORST at Information Anxiety. I'll often find myself stopping halfway through a newspaper article wondering why the heck I am slogging through some topic that doesn't interest me. RR brings out the worst in me; someone nominates a band I don't know well and I start feeling I need the entire discography NOW and I better have it listened to by Monday in case there's a quiz.
Mnemonic - with you on the Drones - until the latest album where something magical seems to have happened. Thanks for the BOC, left you a note in the box. Suspected you would like this one.
Get's me to thinking (can be dangerous) of how our the collective 'Spill musical tastes intersect & overlap with each other. Perhaps we could come up with some kind of chart....

I liked this month's track. I never got a chance to listen to last month's. It's hard to keep up with all the listening that RR/'Spill engenders.

I think I'm suffering from Information Anxiety, Anxiety - what am I supposed do?
I dunno m8. I started twitching and my mouth got dry every time I tried to pick up the book.

@ shoey - I think we'd need at least three dimensions for a really meaningful 'Spill Taste Chart!
We could kick Wacko Jacko out of the O2; that space should just about be big enough for a straws'n'balls molecular-link-type model!!
I've been picturing the RR/'Spill tast chart for about a year now, but I don't know what to put at the centre.
2 words...."Scottish Indie" (with some "Toto" floating around way on the outside somewhere).
And here's what it looks like in my head.
No here's what it looks like:

Haha! Shane at the center, hmmm..
