My Mom's favorite artists were Les Paul & Mary Ford. I have a couple of albums of them that I inherited when my Mom passed away. They are excellent records - Mary's sultry voice and Les's brilliant guitar work. A unique sound. Les was definitely a guitar genius.
I've always enjoyed – but never believed – the story that the Baptista brothers of Os Mutantes didn't speak for two decades after an argument over which was better: a Gibson Les Paul or a Fender Stratocaster.

Here's a clip of Les and Mary doing their hit How High the Moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0ffdwBUL78
Thanks for the clip Marconius. Exquisite. He sets the bar high for mere mortals doesn't he? And Mary's voice is like a warm breeze.
RIP.
Rock music owes him a massive debt.
Just think of all the players who use Les Pauls.
It is a roll call of greatness.
Without Les Paul and Ted McCarty, rock and blues would sound very different.

A giant of the guitar, to think that both Leo Fender and Les Paul are both now gone is very sad. Great respect.
