Think twice

In honour of that impending 2Kth post here is a nice reworking of Donald Byrd's Think Twice- original above, Detroit Experiment (Mark E Pressure Dub) below.
Verrryy Deep.
And this is the "unremixed" Detroit Experiment version with Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, as recently featured on the great Ejaydeecast.

A quick check of Steen's excellent ATCQ sampler reveals the track was also used in Footprints.

Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band did a rather nice version too.

Nice. Same sort of gently mocking, deadpan charm as Skalpel's sculpture. I think the drummers are related.. BTW, I was intrigued by the band name Ex-Otago.. any idea how they came up with it?

The 'Otago' bit is from the New Zealand Rugby team of the same name which the band apparently saw in a film called Scarfies. The 'Ex' seems to be because the band (originally called Otago) split and reformed shortly afterwards.

I remember Scarfies, it was sort of an Otago University version of Withnail and I.. only not quite as good. As I mentioned on RR, I also happen to be Ex-Otago twice over, having attended the university and grown up in the province, with whose anniversary day I also happen to have an intimate relationship.

And Sir Duke!

I love this kind of post. Thanks, Nilpferd. I'm curious about the Detroit Experiment and the Philadelphia experiment as well, but haven't really followed up on either.

I might have to take a look at Scarfies as it stars Taika Waititi of Eagle vs Shark / Flight Of The Conchords fame and half the rest of the cast appeared, at one time or another, in the immortal Xena Warrior Princess.

It's entertaining, although hard to judge if it would work for someone who didn't intimately know the University campus area, as it is pretty packed full of in-jokes. Great soundtrack made up of songs by Flying nun bands, mainly the Dunedin ones.
