'Spill Pets 2 : Mewsli

This is Mewsli, a rescue cat who turns two tomorrow. We've had him since he was a kitten (his mum was abandoned when she had him and his siblings).

Mewsli's all time top ten favourite things:

1. Killing things
2. Sitting on the exact section of the Guardian Weekend that you're just about to read
3. Cuddles (he gets upset if he doesn't know where we are)
4. Killing more things (mice, crows, guinea pigs, whatever comes his way)
5. Rolling around and having his tummy tickled
6. Eating what he kills (beaks and all, but he'll always leave the tail of a mouse)
7. Knocking stuff over when you're trying to sleep
8. His various blankets (he'll cling on for dear life should you try and shift them at all)
9. Drinking your tumbler of water, or hunting food off your plate when you're trying to eat.
10. Purring. It's like an aeroplane taking off, he's so loud.

Mewsli, as early readers of the blog will know, is only a couple of months older than Zissou, a female look-alike. She has turned into a Grade-A killer of mice, flies and possibly other life forms. I will try to post an up-to-date picture soon. A very sociable cat, the only survivor of her litter, she has only just learnt how to purr (and it's very quiet).

I should add that it's nearly kitten season at the cat rescue centres, so, y'now, do the right thing.... and make sure you name it "Speng"....

Re 6: has he started on rabbits yet? For some reason Jasper, who mostly eats takeaways rather than the food we provide, will consume the entirety of rats, squirrels and the like apart from the tail, but invariably leaves about a third of a rabbit...

Maybe the rabbits are too filling? Our Dani killed four baby birds last weekend while I was away, her first little murderous gift for us. I sense a post being made later..

Our cat (Misty) is the worst birder on earth - which as an avid birdwatcher (me - not her) is not necessarily a bad thing. Actually, she is a bit of a birdwatcher. She sits in the bushes, watching them - with a sort of longing gaze - but does sod all about it. She's five years old, a bit on the lardy side, and has caught (to my knowledge) no more than half a dozen birds, a couple of mice and a grass snake! And that's it.

To celebrate his birthday Mewsli murdered a whole bird family, bringing them in one by one, and running back off to the nest over and over again. The horror, the horror...

Luckily he doesn't venture quite far enough for rabbits, they;re just slightly out of his territory - thank goodness.

We don't get too many birds, thankfully, though Amber has been known to take down pigeons. The most unusual contributions used to come from Cleo, Milo's predecessor, who died eighteen months ago: moles on a regular basis (usually unharmed, so just a matter of removing them from under the sideboard), slow worms (again, tended to play dead until she got bored, and could be released unharmed back into the wild), and newts and frogs (rather fewer happy endings...)

Sparky used to bring mice in (some got rescued, but others didn't). Birds he would leave outside (uggh) but he never bothered with the squirrels, I think they're too quick. Now he's older he just sort of watches - he's very lazy.
