The Light pours Out....

Missed my chance to post this week, and it was a good theme. Here's my cover art quiz. There's even one for the jazzers, who seem to be growing in number. I blame radio abahachi. Most are fairly well known, I think, but there's one from my singles collection. If I'd had the red vinyl it would have looked like traffic lights. As it was...
P.S. I managed to sneak in some artwork by the late lamented Barney Bubbles. (Hawkwind, Ian Dury and many stops in between.) Subtle hints to the missus (What d'you mean you've never heard of Barney Bubbles? No, not him from the Flintstones!) may yet result in a seasonal gift of his recently published coffee table tome, Reasons to Be Cheerful: The Life and work of.

So go on, light up. As if you have a choice...

Don't move lads...gah!

Where's the dip on this vehicle Albert? Oh, now you've turned them off...

Unlike Radi Aba, this one has no amber...

Green vinyl not pictured. Otherwise it goes green, amber and back to green. They probably spent more on this than they did on Physical Graffiti and Blue Monday combined. It still doesn't work.

I think the fridge is flirting with the lamp. There is a vacuum cleaner on the right but he was spurned.

1. David Bowie The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
3. Little Feat - Feats Don't Fail Me Now

Several others are very familiar but I can't quite place them yet.

#4 is Billy Bragg's Life's A Riot with Spy v. Spy. David Bowie was the only other one I knew.

I recognise the black cover with the green orange and white traffic lights but I can't quite get it and the one with the lamp and the fridge is driving me crazy!!!

@ saneshane - Doh! Attention to detail has never been my strong point. A bit of a handicap in my work as a proofreader... :o)

Time to apply my 300-years+ experience of hanging around record shops to some practical use:

2 is clearly some jazz dudes... I mean, look at that hat! My guess is either Weather Report or Return To Forever.

As Mnemonic says, 3 is "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" - I just want to add a quick namecheck for the brilliant Neon Parks, whose cover art is rather more to my taste than the actual content of most Little Feat songs.

Dunno 5 at all - to misquote the words of that powerhouse duo Smokie With Roy "Chubby" Brown, who the feck is Radi Aba?

6 is by the great Barney Bubbles (whose book I was looking at in a desultory fit of Xmas shopping earlier today, P'foot... sorry!). Is it by The Rumour? - if so, it's "Purity Of Essence", which is the only one of their albums I haven't owned at one point or another. Of course I may be utterly wrong... but let's not contemplate the social emarrassment just now, eh?

8 is a still from "The Wizard of Oz", innit? - hence (in a rock context) "Eldorado" by ELO.

I recognise the two young feller-me-lads in 9, but my long-term recall is gone. Nope.

The fridge in 10 looks familiar - hold on... Speng! - I see you!

These quizes are always bittersweet for me as they remind me of my mouse eaten record covers. Sure I used to have over half of these on vinyl *sobs*.

Don't forget your Festive 'Spill picks Mr. Proudfoot. You too Tracy & Shiv.

the ones i know have already been taken.

did anyone own up to being speng in the end?

Anonymous said...

Not sure that Speng revealing himself is a good idea.

Is that a threat now, Mr Shoey, or are you just pleased to see (the back of) me?

Certainly seemed to set the cat among the pigeons with some of your chaps, diddle I? Cant think why...is it because im not enough of a pipe and slippers man? Ah me. And im such a pacifist too. Make love, not war and all that.

Anyhoo, I just wanted to add my congrats to Mr proudfoot for such a fine quiz and to offer one more album cover that should have made it into the list - Black and Blue by The Stones.

Such a fine record sleeve, with Mr Jagger at his stallionesque finest, holding aloft a sparkler of some kind to make the best use of timelapse photography, and Mr Richard's stamping his imagine indelibly in the collective 70's imagination. Ah, what times they were!

Anyway, seasons greetings! To you too Mr Shoey, sir!! Let steeple bells be swungen, and all that! Toodle pop, my dears! I'm off for a jog round the cafes and surf the totty.

Cheerio!

BS

Sorry folks. Was very busy over w/end.

1. Ziggy

2.Genesis ATTW3. D'sD, what were the improper records you bought? Yes it counts if it was in Woolworths. A badge of honour in fact.

3. Little Feat's Feats Don't Fail me Now. Neon Parks WAS good wasn't he?

4. Barney Bubbles' cover for Billy Bragg's Spy Vs Spy

5. Aha. Gotcha. Jazz. Will wait for someone to get this.

6. Shiv, it IS the Rumour and Barney again. This is the cover for the 'Emotional Traffic' single. You are a star. Did you buy the book?
Of course I meant RADIO ABAHACHI. Sorry.

7. The Youth's 'Daydream Nation'

8. ELO/ ELdOrado (see what they did there?)

9.People might own up to being Speng, but none durst admit to owning this Heart album.

10. The Cure. I wished at the time I had waited until they released 'Boy's Don't Cry' on the later issue of the album, but the cover was way inferior.

Thanks for playing y'all.

PS. Belatedly put my Festive 3 in Shoey. Good Idea.
I miss Uncle John.

Thanks proudfoot - I always enjoy the quizzes on here - even when I am usually officially rubbish...

Haven't a clue about #5, but @shiv, Radio Aba is me, short for Radio Abahachi, latest podcast posted here at the beginning of the month.

Who on earth is Kenyon Hopkins?

sourpus said...

Damn, I came so late to this one! Such a nice disparate collection of sleeves.

I certainly dont own this Heart album myself - it being some kind of hits album, no? - but I do (proudly) have their first 8 albums in my collection at home though...

... What?? They were a GREAT band!

Proudfoot said...

Sourpus it's a kind of live/unplugged effort called 'The Road Home' from mid 90s. My friend has it. Not me. Honest.

5. Was Kenyon Hopkins' The Sound of New York. (1959) Picked it up in a charity shop a few years back.
Kenyon scored movies too, including The Fugitive Kind, The Hustler and 12 Angry Men.
