Manuel Göttsching's next concert

And it's all go in the Göttsching household. Ilona, his wife and long-time buddy, Manuel and me by telephone have been hammering out the details of the invitation to his next concert. They are planning a major film music gala evening where Ilona's documentary, The Sound of Silents, about one of the last silent movie pianists, will be shown. Manuel will accompany Murnau's classic The Haunted Castle (Schloss Vogelöd). Blimpster - your shout. This is an FP public service announcement, but if anyone feels I am shamelessly advertising - you know what to do. They're pals of mine and extremely lovely people and I'm gutted that I'll probably not make it up to Berlin to see this. So I can at least tell you lot about it.

We've had 112 visits to the blog from people in Germany, so it's fine and valid to put it up.

Now, if we want to have proper advertising on the site......

Cheers Blimpster. Any chance of putting a visit counter on the top of the blog? I'd love to see how many people are reading our bletherings. You getting a Haggis for Burns night, by the way? I got one from McSweens but will have serious problems with the turnips...

Um- that was probably me, Blimpy.. but I won't make it to Berlin.. I'm feeling guilty enough as it is for missing the Ed Hillary ceremony..

Shame as we have cheap flights from Baden Karlsruhe via German wings. Ilona, if you're reading this - I'll catch you guys in Cannes if you're there. Versprochen.

FP, the mention of Haggis is a cast iron excuse to post ma maw's braw Haggis recipe.. maybe at the weekend.. I advise you to pre-order the suet and lungs
Btw, Blimpy, I take it MiniMcflah knows the Animal ABC off by heart already?

Haggis doesn't get much better than McSweens, really.
This year I'm going to try a new whisky sauce for it. I'll let you know how I get on.
I would never ever attempt to construct my own haggis from scratch - too scary!
I have picked up that book in shops before, but never bought it. My Scots accent isn't up to much.

You are both total stars. Blimpy, I have got 2 MCSWEENS HAGGISES (HAGGI? What's the plural of Haggis??) in my freezer. I used to live directly opposite McSweens in Edinburgh (posh Scottish accent - "in Brunsfield - that's next to Morningside..") so need no convincing. But I have no idea how to get gravy from the wee things... Please post any sauce or gravy recipes you have cos I'll be needin' them.. Can we make this Saturday a bit of a Scottish day on the blog? That'd be fun, no? I was born in Durham (like Trevor Horn and Paddy McAloon) but have Scottish roots on both sides of which I am inordinately proud. I look quite nice in a kilt too. Whadya think?

I make a mean vegetarian haggis.

The Gourds have a song about a haggis...

(the plural of haggis is "more haggis please")

I'm fully behind Scots weekend, maybe dorian will pick a Scots RR theme!

I'll try and post the recipe I'm going to be using, but it is as yet untested by myself. I think it involves whiskey, soy sauce, worchester sauce and somethings else.

I only realised a couple of months back, when in Bruntsfield that that was the place of origin for Mcsweens haggis. I like both the veggie and offally mcsweens and quite often will have them both served at the same time.

I used to live around the corner from Crombies the Butcher (in posher accent - "In the New Town, thank you very much") - now that was an amazing butchers, boy I miss it.

Gravy??!! Vegetarian????!!!! Shorry Shteenbeck, but "there are shome things that jusht aren't done.. that's as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs" (Sean Connery, Goldfinger)
I see I'll need to post that recipe after all... Blimpy, my scottish accent is generally characterised as "Glasgow ship builder having spent a lot of time in Pakistan" by my parents, which to be fair is probably an accurate assessment. But that just makes it all the more hilarious trying to say "Greetin' gorilla in a guddle".
Scottish weekend? Great idea.. I've got Loveless on repeat already..

(Jean Brodie voice) Ahnd remember, bloggers. You are the crème de la crème. Vairy much lookin' forward to this week end and a celebration of all things Scottish. Blimpy, I'm really counting on you for a decent haggis sauce by Saturday :O) I lived in Forbes Road, before moving onward and upward to 'Mairchiston' in 4th year. But the New Town is also vairy posh. And Crombie's very famous. Wonderful wonderful memories. I left part of me in Edinburgh when I left - it's still wandering, wraith-like, across The Meadows on a sunny morning. Sniff.

Apologies if this multiple posts (i.e. self-donds)

I agree with Nilpferd - no sauce, no vegetables. Just haggis, (very butery mashed) neeps and (very buttery mashed) tatties. And mashed means mashed, not pureed. Accompanied by whisky, of course.

As chance would have it,there is a Serbian version of haggis called 'maramica' (handkerchief). It is so called because the chopped sheep's offal is wrapped in piece caul when cooked, which looks like a handkerchief.

The Fugits spent a summer in Edinburgh in 1990. We camped out in Leith just as it was becoming gentrified. Fond memories of Valbonna and Crolla and The North Sea Chinese restaurant just off Princess Street, at the station end. While I was working, madame Fugit spent her days making use of free tickets to the Fringe.

There's a romanian variation too in a pastry casing which gets eaten at easter.

I'm afraid I'm in the 'gravy' camp here - and tempted to apply myself to the challenge of getting gravy out of a haggis, as opposed to making some separately to go with it.

Back to the concert; I would so much like to go to this, and can't, so not sure if I wish that you'd never tempted me like this...

Splendid splendid to hear about the regional variations of haggis. Here's me thinking it was a native bird of the Scottish highlands only... Sheeps offal in a handkey eh? Shall try that on Frogprince when we've had an argument. Blimpy I was in Auld Reekie from 85 to 89 and so danced at the Kangeroo Club (Soul to soul, Hue and Cry, Roadblock!!! Black clumpy shoes and dinner jackets de riguer. And then at Big Bird ("Good Life" was the staple dance floor filler). Hung out at The City Café and Sneaky Pete's and of course the film house. Sigh.

Fear not Abahachi - I get first hand info on whatever Manuel and Ilona are doing. She rings me up and says "Guess what?!?!?". Promise I'll post it all on the blog if you're interested. I sat back and listened to all 59"20' of E2-E4 last night. Christ it's clever. And he just knocked it off in a studio one night on his own as he was in a "concert mood", having just finished a tour. Genius, eh?

The City Cafe is still going strong, and I caught the tail end of sneaky petes in '99 when I moved there, it closed not long afterwards. The filmhouse is still awesome. I've had stuff shown there too.

Wow - so that's two film makers among us - you and Steenbeck. I worked on the production side and know a bit about European funding and generally getting the money together. Feel a movie coming on, guys? Have just bought the Cliff Richard film - Wonderful Life - where the kids make a film. Feel a Una Stubbs moment coming on...
