2001 - STAR WARS ETC.

THE MIGHTY MITCHELL.

Last week I posted that piece about losing my emails and then subsequently finding them again. Were it not for that I might never have started scrolling through my 10 year old emails. This week I came across another one, also to my friend Bill, and my immediate thought was "I think there might be some at the Spill who'd enjoy this". It involves a variety of topics: film special effects, sci-fi films, ie 2001, Star Wars and Silent Running, photography and the evolution of Photoshop and my tiny roll in all of the above.
It would tie up too much space here so I've posted it at my blog under the title '2001 - Star Wars etc' If you're interested go to: http://goneforeign.blogspot.com/

Fascinating, gf - Silent Running is one of my favourite films...

I have a friend called Mat Irvine who used to work as a special effects man for the BBC, in the days when they made spaceships out of hairdryers (Blake's 7). He made the little Tardis that spins round at the beginning of Dr Who!

Do you know what all the exterior shots of the huge spaceship in StarWars was made with?
Plastic model car kits by the hundreds assembled almost randomly, ditto for the space fighters, all model cars.

No, but I'm not a bit surprised!

Love the picture and the post, GF. Fascinating stuff. I collect old, mostly no-longer-working film cameras and projectors because I find them aesthetically pleasing, and that one in your photo is a doozy!

Steen: That is not my Mitchell, mine was black but identical. I never used it in a film, couldn't afford the 35mm but it used to stand on it's Mitchell tripod in my office with the AC motor attached and the side open so you could see and hear that fabulous film transport mechanism; it was a piece of sculpture.
Thanks to all who've commented.

There's a guy near Marconius (in Langley, where the Langley Schhols Music Project took place) who did most of the special effects for Battlestar Galactica (I think, or some similar show). His secret was going around all the yard sales/card boots looking for unique items - couplings from hoovers, etc. His wife said their garage and basement and shed(s) out back were jam packed with stuff.
