Kings, beggar maids and whatnot

This is King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid by Burne-Jones, which we had on the wall of our sitting room during the 70s - and many of the songs recommended this week have a love-between-different-social-classes aspect to them. Well, you can't get much more different than a king and a beggar maid, I say, though I wish he'd given her a new frock before he started adoring her...

What do you think the people on the balcony are saying about it all?

Darkness on the Edge of Town - Bruce Springsteen
I Live in Trafalgar Square - Richard Thompson
The Little Gypsy Girl - Shirley Collins and the Albion Country Band
The Little Beggar Girl - Richard and Linda Thompson
Lady Diamond - Steeleye Span
Lord Gregory - Shirley Collins and Davey Graham
We Poor Labouring Men - Norma Waterson

This is going to get me thrown off the 'Spill, or sent to Coventry, or something, and I can only plead in my defence that I spent most of the day ferrying German academics around (up to Bristol to catch bus, they manage to miss bus despite having half an hour to spare, so back to collect them and on to Heathrow...) and so am very tired. Anyway, my instant reaction to the question: "You can see right down her top."

Balcony NME reader 1: "It says in here that goth is the new nu-rave"

Balcony NME reader 2: "That would explain it then..."

I say you can't beat Burne-Jones.His drawings are amazing, his paintings incredible ... but I think they're saying "I wish he'd hurry up and finish the picture, me leg's gone to sleep ..."
