A Frog on the Riviera: D minus 1

I'll try and keep in touch while I'm down here, particularly if something momentous happens (and it always does). As you can see, today was the day on which Cannes is turned into the world capital of cinema for two weeks, with the aid of much hammering of nails, rolling out of carpets, building up of walls and hauling of endless pots of flowers. It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears (and in my case, cussing) but by this evening the transformation was almost complete. A final lick of spit and polish tomorrow morning and we're off. The limos and stars can arrive, cos we're ready! You always walk miles on the first day and my poor feet are suffering agonies in spite of brand new trainers purpose bought for the task. I've only just had a real chance to look at the official selection and it's a bumper crop. Variety called it a "heavyweight auteur smackdown" and, leafing greedily through the glossy programme, I realise I want to see every single film. Every one of 'em. There's Tarantino and Park Chan Wook for the thrills and 'Spills, Andrea Arnold and Ken Loach keeping the British end up, Michael Haneke and Lars von Trier for the chills (that'll be a double hot chocolat evening, just for comfort), Alain Resnais and Jacques Audiard providing the French touch (and both Depardieu and Johnny Halliday are in town) and "those without whom" being Ang Lee and Almodovar. Lots of new discoveries in store by directors whose work I don't know as well. Can't wait!

Just a wee chune I'd like to draw your attention to as I fell head over heels in love with it this week: Strange overtones by David Byrne and Brian Eno. You can download the free and legal MP3 here. Giveitawhirl!!

What is it you do, if I may ask?

@tincanman, you can ask but she won't tell, well she wouldn't tell me anyway, even when I accused her of handing out the canapes and champers a couple of years back. Ofcourse, you may have more refined interrogatory skills......

I make great cocktails!!Blue ones!

oh, like waddup u do lil miss froggie?

Doesn't really matter; I was just curious. We should all be free to take a trip and only share as much about it as we want. I, for instance, went to Lidl today but I'm not saying what I got.

@ tin - I hope you got a bottle of their cheap sherry: Tio Whatever-o. It goes great in stir-fry dishes (about the same size splash as the soy sauce).

@DsD
does that make you Lidl cook or big cook (only parents with sprogs of a certain age who watch children's bbc will have any idea what I'm on about!)

@FP...I loved the Byrne and Eno, I've been meaning to get the album for a while.. but other things keep popping up first.. ENJOY Cannes.

Oh, I'm definitely 'Big' Cook. It was DarceysMam who made the sherry discovery, so I shall tell her she has now been nominated as 'Lidl' Cook.

@tin - my guess is that you bought lots of cured meat and a really really big slab of butter. And, Lidl being Lidl, they probably had an offer on a telescope or a go-kart or somesuch so you may have taken that plunge too?...

@FP - enjoy the festival, if you can, and I hope the glamour and the cocktails are both of sufficient quality. Will you be catching Inglourious Basterds? My only point, though, would be to say that your feet maybe are sore precisely BECAUSE of the new sneakers?

@shane - is it jut me or does big cook always seem to be a little bit rough and surly for kids tv? But then, I suppose he is a chef...

FP, are you actually Dennis Pennis? ;)

@snad
after the years of training, you then spend your life interacting with a bad special effect.. keeping the 'What the heck* am I doing here' look off your face would be a tough ask... rough surly, if it wasn't for this Lidl sherry it'd be murder.
(* it's before the watershed - even in thinking terms)

snadfrod said...

@shane - it really is a spectacularly bad special effect, isn't it? Plus he always seems to have to cook things not on the menu for bears and the like. It'd drive anyone up the wall, for sure.

Wouldn't you be surly if your business partner was such a shirker? Have you EVER seen Small cook anything? First chance he gets, he buggers off on his flying spoon (which you'll notice he never offers to share)!

I'm watching too much kids telly, aren't I ...

Oh and donds for Snadfrod's trainers comment. If I've got a big day coming, I'd NEVER put the new ones on.

She starts talking about Cannes and we go off on a Big Cook Little Cook tangent. Reminds me of a Cheers episode when Norm and Cliff start analyzing the symbolism of Coyote and Roadrunner. ''welll clearly the coyote is the anti christ.''

And for the record, it was a microscope and electric wood plane

The thing that worries me about BCLC is that they never ask the customer what he/she wants...Ivan loves it, so of course I do too.

LOVING the banter. Made me laugh out loud. Tincanman you owe me a keyboard for the Lidl comment (how much do we all love Lidl non food? Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much!) Darce I am sooooooo with you on the Lidl sherry for DIY oriental cuisine. You mix it with cornflower to glaze what you've just wokked, right? Been there, done that. And still do....Saneshane - great song innit? Blew my sox off this week. Snadfrod - I'll try and see INGLOURIOS BESTUDS because I AM a fan and he creates such a party atmosphere around his films. You may well be right about the trainers.... Sourpus - Gotcha!!! :-))) And my new "how to survive Cannes" policy...? EAT SUSHI. Found a great sushi bar in town and had some for my lunch. I'm still raring to go. It's the new energy food, people. I'm on a sushi roll here despite copious quantities of bandol with some very old friends. And not a typo in site.
Hum.

FP - this should be a marriage made in heaven but I'm not sure about it yet. Saw Eno donkeys years ago when he was with Roxy Music - he was wearing a green lizard suit of some sort (not quite a frog). Anyway I digress, have fun!

FP, are you actually Dennis Pennis?F PDennis PennisSo probably not.
Frank Pennis maybe. Oh wait, this is Cannes.
Frederico Pennis?
Felipe Pennis?
