Spaceface: Steppin' Out Mix

Just a little mix I did recently of the sort of music that I play out and about and on the radio. Thought you might like it and it'll give you a bit of an introduction to at least one side of me and the sort of stuff that I like - very laid-back Sunday afternoon vibes and, dare I say it, Balearic. It's a bit rough round the edges, but the music's a treat and I'm sure there'll be something there for everyone. The live version of Joe Jackson's Steppin' Out at the start is worth the entry fee alone!
Download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?1hz1diwmql2 and hopefully enjoy!

1. Joe Jackson: Steppin' Out (Live)
2. Coyote: Sonny's Song
3. Rubies: Room Without A Key (Studio Version)

Hi Balearic - enjoyed this. Joe Jackson is great, my ex came from Gosport and he had something of a following down there, back in the day (Joe Jackson, not my ex!)

Thanks Ali; glad you liked it. That live version is a bit special. It's on a Joe Jackson Live album, but got released as a ltd edition 12" last year. Whereas the single version is quite jaunty, this is all moody and atmospheric, almost in a Talk Talk or Doves kinda way. Great "end of the night" record, especially with the cheering at the end.
I was going to put this up in the Dropbox to save people having to download it, but Tincanman told me I was having issues with my Media Player uploading album art to the Dropbox, so I've uninstalled it for now, until I can work out how to stop it.

tincanman said...

anyone else using WMP on Vista who knows how to stop auto uploading of album art?

Save me messing with wife's PC and figuring it out.

I was using iTunes and went to Dropbox help desk to find the answer and they denied it was happening. One of the pieces of artowrk downloaded was not related to the track and I didn't have the album it belonged to on my computer at all, so it seems to be plucking artwork out of the ether.

Sometimes it adds artwork 24 hours after the track has gone up too.

Many people who sign up to dropbox have the problem initially and can make it stop, so there is no randomness to it at all.

For the past month the only artwork we have had is from one person, and thats a unique situation which he is correcting.

Mnemonic said...

If it puts in artwork that isn't on your computer, it must be picking it up from somewhere else. I can forward you Dropbox's email telling me it doesn't happen, if you like

Mnemonic said...

And if you'd like to be helpful, maybe you can tell me how they made it stop

tincanman said...

Thanks for the advice.

BB and I have been in touch and the issue is in hand.

I don't use WMP, so I don't have instructions to post.

Meanwhile, can we have a Mac friendly format please?

Mnemonic said...

Hi ejaydee, I don't use WMP either. Maybe we should get together and sort something out among ourselves.

tincanman said...

of what?

eJay, there's lots of Mac people using dropbox but I'm on PC so I couldn't help with anything specific. I can give you a name or two in private if you like... although from my experience you are as advanced a Mac user as anyone anyway. (And your machine doesn't upload album artwork lol)

Mnemonic, you remain the only person removed from dropbox, and from your tone I don't see that changing anytime soon. I am not getting drawn into things with you again, so that is my last word on the subject.

OK, here's how it's looking from my end at the moment. I uninstalled Dropbox from my computer last night after the email from Tincanman. I can still access the account however from the getdropbox site. From looking through the recent events on it, there doesn't seem to have been any activity on there in terms of uploading artwork since I uninstalled it. Hopefully that's sorted it - if not, let me know asap. I've just uploaded my mix onto it with no problems(and that doesn't have any artwork associated with it), so it's there now for anyone who'd like a listen!

Mnemonic said...

I've still got it installed and I've enjoyed your mix. But there is something odd about the artwork downloading. A friend sent me a recording he'd made and Dropbox included his entire picture folder with it. If someone finds a solution, we'd really like to know it because Dropbox themselves have been no help at all.

My guess on the artwork issue would be the funky way that wmp & i-tunes store these files separately from the sound files. The file paths become corrupted very easily. I-tunes is also good at selecting the wrong art work if you let it. Drop Box is simply a shared folder - the problem is probably with the source pc.

@Mnemonic - while you are there, here is a gig you may be interested in:

Prurient, if you don't him already, is a one man extremely extreme noise artist that teeters on the cusp of noise and black metal. He runs his own Hospital Productions label and has stuff out on Load records too.

OK everybody take a deep breath (he says 5 hours too late). My selfish request (well for me and anybody else using a mac) is that all audio files in the dropbox be in mp3 format.
I hadn't realised that there was a problem with the artwork uploading, I'd like to help but I'm not sure how to.

Shoey said...

Ejay - i-Tunes will convert the pesky little beasts (File/import). If you move the wma files to a new folder you can batch upload them too.

ejaydee said...

That's the trick either Apple or Windows plays, that feature doesn't work on a Mac, I would be grateful if you did it and put the mp3 version in the dropbox though... ;)

Alas I find the whole weekly dropbox deluge too much . How about this?:

or this free one:

BalearicBeat said...

ejd - Forgot that was a .wma file. Have just converted it and am uploading it as an .mp3 to Dropbox now.

DarceysDad said...

Where is it in DropBox, Balearic? Is it a folder I don't have an invite for?

BalearicBeat said...

Check again, DsD. I hadn't quite started uploading it when I typed that and it took quite a while. It should be in the RR folder now. Let me know if it's not.

Mnemonic said...

Thanks, Japanther. Prurient is one of those names I've heard before but never checked out. He's playing one of my favourite venues si I'll try to get along to it.

On conversion, if you don't mind paying for it, Audioconverter is a neat piece of software that converts virtually any audiofile format to any other. I think I paid about $15 for it when I first started buying flac files.

DarceysDad said...

Got it, Balearic; ta.

Now definitely time for bed.

tincanman said...

No need to pay. The top open source (free) choice is MediaCoder

goneforeign said...

Agreed with Ejay, I was going to ask the same question but I thought it was just me having a problem.

ejaydee said...

Thanks Shoey, the second (Switch) was the winner, free and easy enough to use. EasyWMA was only a demo version, and unfortunately Mediacode seems to be a PC application. I had some .ogg files lying around, and it seems to be working fine.

DarceysDad said...

Sorry, call me thick but ... did you say the Switch thingy link works on .ogg files?

I've got a download of Magical World Of The Strands awaiting my ability to solve that problem.

ejaydee said...

It did work withy my .ogg files, but it may be just a mac software, try tin's mediacoder tip further up.

tincanman said...

I used Switch and it was great except for ... one of two problems and I can't remember which. Either it started insisting I buy something or it had DRM issues on some WMA files.

MediaCoder has no issues, but does look complicated. The music only one is a little simpler.

tincanman said...

Meant to also say eJay is on Mac and I am on PC as he said and the 'same' program often works better on one than the other.
