Hello ! I've just listened to the 3 Tom Waits tracks so far, as I've had work to catch up with this evening. They're all splendidly on-topic, and Step Right Up nails some of the extravagant claims made by retailers large & small to solve all our problems. Back later in the week for some more education & enlightenment. Thanks as always !

I've just enjoyed this lot...
I think that step right up was the first ever Tom Waits track I was introduced to.

(this version of the Roots track has odd censorship doesn't it?)

I was having a chat with my pseudo brother in law last night, and he was saying they use a Dr.Dre album for some production comparisons in their electronic music (he then lost me on a technical level) but I had to play him my CD that I picked up once, it had a sale sticker (keeping on theme here) over another sticker saying edited version. there was so many reversed swear words you may as well have just reversed the entire album.
We nearly dessip* ourselves laughing at how bad it sounded.

* edited version (pay no more than 10p)

Yay! A bumper crop of Tom Waits this week, LOVED that spoken word/joke/song....it's taken a while Steen, but I am finally fully won round to Tom. Is their a definitive album one should own?

...and Donds for Dead Milkmen too!

Thanks, Japanther. I'm not sure where to tell you to start. Ordinarily I'd suggest the sweeter more mellow ones, but I seem to remember you don't mind a bit of cacophony. That spoken word song is from a 3 disc set called Orphans, which I think is bits and pieces from throughout his career that didn't make it onto an album. THere are some gems on there, including quite a few storytelling ones like that. I love Rain Dogs--it's a nice combination of sweet melodies, insane genius lyrics and some crazy loud music. It was my first Tom Waits. Also like Swordfishtrombones, from around the same era (That's where soldiers Things is from). Nighthawks at the diner is his 3rd album, from the 70s I think--he got some backing musicians, rented out a club and basically tells stories/sings for an hour and a half. I also love Frank's WIld Years, Small Change...I think I spilled some of his songs from different eras at one point, I'll go back and see if I can find it.

I'd be glad to dropbox some albums for you, but I don't know where to start. He has so many.

Can you use spotify in Japan?

Here's the post, Japanther...

And all the songs are still there! If there's anything you like a lot, I'll figure out which album it's from, and I can dropbox an album or two for you.

Actually, Japanther--podbean isn't very good for you, is it? Cause you can't listen on your bike. I'll try to dropbox a few albums and see how it goes. Maybe tomorrow, though, I have to work tonight.

I'm having a longer listen now without trying to work at the same time. The Skip James, Tom Waits, Belle & Sebastian and Talib Kweli are my favourites.

Thanks for continuing to post here, because of a lack of computer space and speed, I've uninstalled DropBox and haven't ventured onto Spotify, so The 'Spill continues to work for me.

Thanks Steenbeck! Some albums in Dropbox would be wonderful.
The titles Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombome sound familiar to me. So either or both of those would be fantastic. Don't hurry though, anytime at all is fine, you sound pretty busy....

Thanks Daddypig. It's quite an effort to listen twice when you have little ones!

Japanther, I put Rain Dogs in Dropbox. I'm listening to it now, and I'd forgotten how much I like it. Although as I recall it took me a few listens to get into it. I'll put Swordfishtrombones tomorrow. I just figured out some bulk uploading tricks that mean it's easy peasy to do a whole album. So if you like these I can do more.

And I keep forgetting to say I listened to your AOTW. IT's funny because I always claim to like every genre of music, but prog is one I don't have as much of an ear for. I did enjoy it more than I expected though--I liked elements of it quite a lot. And I'm sure if I gave it some more listens I'd like it even better. Completely new to me, anyway, which is becoming a nice characteristic of AOTW albums.

Thanks so much for dropping that in Steenbeck. It really is appreciated. Rain Dogs is downloading now and will be the perfect accompaniment for my commute tomorrow. Thank You!

Please tell the techno dumb amongst us.. I could use an easier way of doing things.. thanks.

Good lord, this album is making me so happy right now.

Japanather--glad you got it. I'll put swordfishtrombones in today.

Saneshane, I'm sure you know already, I just figured it out. When you want to do a whole album by a particular artist after you hit UPLOAD, when you choose the tracks, if you type the album name and "mp3" it will give you all your mp3s from the album and you can select them all, and then hit upload. So you don't have to do it one at a time. You knew this, didn't you? And in iTunes, I was thinking you had to convert to mp3s one at a time, but, if, say, you were doing one album, you can select all, then when you ask it to convert to mp3s it will do the whole thing. That's all. I'm sure it's common knowledge.

Another method for iTunes, you can highlight all the tracks you want to upload, hit Control C, go to relevant folder in Dropbox and hit Control V. It will then upload them all in its own sweet time. To bring them all into iTunes, from the main iTunes menu, hit file, hit "add folder to library" and pick up relevant folder from dropbox.

saneshane said...

no.. didn't know 'album name mp3' bit, I did know you could bulk convert in iToons.. I should really convert albums when I find they aren't mp3 just in case they are needed for a playlist!
cheers for that.
back to EJDs album.

and thanks for that mnemonic.

I can't actually remember how I did it, but my iTunes now imports all CDs as mp3; saves an awful lot of time later. Just wish I'd been told about that option before I set up the intial 16500 tunes in the first place!

steenbeck said...

Mnemonic--I can't figure out how to paste it--Dropbox doesn't give me the option.

I've listened to The Ecstatic 7 times today and I'm in love.

Although, at the moment I want to be santogold when I grow up.

@Steen, you are in the dropbox folder in Explorer, not the interactive one, aren't you? Control V is the PC "copy" shortcut. A Mac user can give you the Mac version

steenbeck said...

Cntrl V is copy on a mac, too. But I must be in the wrong folder. I'll try again tomorrow.
