Hip hop funky organ samples post #2

Steen posted this great A.T.C.Q. track a couple of weeks ago on RR for the youth cults theme, it opens with a sample of Reuben Wilson's recording of Inner City Blues, from the album The Sweet Life, recorded in 1974. Additionally, a recent compilation from Steen featuring Jamaican organ legend Jackie Mittoo inspired me to revisit Wilson's organ and blues band.

Here's Wilson's Inner city blues, a nicely stripped down piece of R&B. The rest of the album occupies the same relaxed, pared down groove- in particular the title track and the Mittooesque I'll take you there hit some very sweet spots.
Listen on Dropbox.

Nilpferd, many, many thanks for your advice re. the links on my *Mother's Pride* post. They are now working(!), so Steen, DsD and anyone else with the energy to scroll back a whole page can now listen to mrdebbyjr and his songs.
Must rush off now before the library closes, but am really looking forward to some funky organ this evening.
Cheers!

I loved them all, Nilpferd, particularly the first and last.

Here's another Reuben Wilson-sampling track, with the added bonus of being DJ Premier-produced...

(I looked him up in The Breaks)

You're welcome, Debbym- glad it worked.
Love the Nas track, Steen- Premier is brilliant with samples. I didn't know this Reuben Wilson track, Breaked it and now I'm listening to it on Spotify. In this case I'd say it's like T.R.O.Y.- the sample is better than the rest of the track. And We're in love is quite similar to the Tom Scott track Pete Rock used for T.R.O.Y., somewhat overladen with backing vocals and an uncertain musical concept. In fact, Memory Lane seems to lyrically reference T.R.O.Y. too, if I'm not imagining things.

The original is fantastic; good to hear it again. 'Fraid I thought all the others paled by comparison.

"inspired me to revisit Wilson's organ".

Hmmm.

Wilson's organ? Is that the one that debbym is looking forward to having a funk with this evening?

Double Hmmm.

Rumour has it that Toffee had an "enormous" organ at one time.

Shoey- you like to watch, don't you.. Mr. Worldwide Watchdog Peepshow..
And Dsd- finally managed one straight through, then? Well done!

That was an impressive bit of organing, & guitaring too. Thanks, Nilp.

Not that it matters, but is this Jazz, Blues, R&B or whathaveyou?

I suppose I'd call it jazz-funk, even if I did say it was R&B above.. it is still improvised, and the general feel is nearer to jazz than to pure R&B- setting up melodies which are then dissected, the dynamics of the rhythm section, and the horn playing on top.

There is also that Tss Tss Tss sound on at least one of the tracks, sorry for forgetting to mention that DsD.

Which definition reminds me of quite a good line spoken by Robin Williams' irritatingly typecast nutcase in the second rate Pixar ripoff Robots-
"It's a mixture between Jazz and Funk.."
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah.. they call it Junk..."

Reminds me of Brick's Dazz.
"jazz, jazz, disco jazz"
