30 Minutes Over Tokyo - Spirit of Independence

"Are you down with the underground?"

This is the essential question being posed for this second podcast. What is underground? Does it matter? Should we buy independent? What is independent these days anyway? What do you do when bands you like suddenly get big? Do they change? Do you?Who cares?!

All of these issues and less are tackled in no depth whatsoever in what ended up with me just playing some tunes from my favourite labels. There's the now customary cover version (my favourite ever!), underground hip-hop, more Japanese garage and a new feature, "Now and Then" which takes a look at an artist/band/label/genre and plays a tune from back in the day back to back with a more recent offering.

With a couple of epic tracks to finish Part A and start Part B, I decided to pilfer Toffeeboys idea and put a quiz in the middle. Pit your brain against the mindset of the Japanese nation and see if you can work out the wonderful world of Japanese English expressions! Plenty of 'Spill points up for grabs!

Again, all feedback and suggestions more than welcome.

1?
2?
3Beyonce?
4?

You don't live in Maison Hatsudai in Shibuya do you. I saw a man send CDs to that address at the post office today.

@ejaydee - not me in Hatsudai i'm afraid - but it ain't too far from where I am.
- Beyonce is well known enough (only because a ahem....plump ......Japanese "comediennne" has an act that consists entirely of miming to Beyonce/Destiny's Child songs and dancing around a bit)
- it does start with "B" though....

@Blimpy - didn't know about Svenonious' new project, but it looks interesting..definitely one to look forward to..

is a barcode a Charltonesque sweep over of the Hair by any chance?

loving it so far.. part one finishes abruptly on my download though.. so I didn't find out who the last track was.

Japanther said...

@saneshane - well done that man! Spill points duly awarded - a "barcode" is indeed a combover!! conjures up just the right image I think!

- last track one part one was The Make-Up and their ace cover of "Hey Joe"

Haven't had time to listen to the Podcast yet but dipped into the quiz. I think number 4 may be connected to Garry Glitter?

steenbeck said...

Oh, shane did get Britney. Shoot, I didn't notice, and I thought I was so clever.

I've only heard part 1 so far, but I really liked it. I wrote down the names of all the music I like HOURS ago, but I can't find the little scrap of paper I wrote it on. Sigh. Well, the Hey Joe was wonderful...

I'm interested in that question, too, about what makes something independent. As an "independent" (failed) filmmaker I'm fascinated about the varying definitions of the word, and I'll go into it later when the demands on my time and the computer aren't so demanding

Japanther said...

Toffeeboy....you are correct, indeed a Gary Glitter connection !! Nice one, that was a difficult one....but why????

Japanther said...

Just to confirm:
1. Bicycle (the shopping bike sort a mother/housewife might ride)
2. ?
3. Britney Spears (joining the illustrious ranks of the Governator - Schwa-chan and more recently Burappi (Mr. Jolie)
4. Paedophile
5. Combover

and I thought 2. was the easiest!!Being the closest to actual English...

Will someone please, please, please post the answer to #2, it's been driving me mad for twö days now. The only thing I can come up with is "raw fear", and I'm sure that can't be right

Japanther said...

Alright here's the full answers and workings:

1. Bicycle (the shopping bike sort a mother/housewife might ride)
2. Around Forty (this came from a TV drama with the female lead characters all being unmarried at forty years old. This is definitely a good thing for gender equality in Japan. Just 15 or so years ago, 25 years old was 'left on the shelf' for Japanese women, who were supposed to give up their jobs pouring tea in the office and become good housewives by then)
3. Britney Spears (joining the illustrious ranks of the Governator - Schwa-chan and more recently Burappi (Mr. Jolie)
4. Paedophile (here's the workings- bear in mind there is no "L" or "M" in Japanese- Rorikon . "Rori" is "Lolita" and "Kon" is "complex", thus, someone with a Lolita Complex is a paedo.
5. Combover
