There's a real atmosphere of anticipation over here tonight. Apologies to anyone who thought that The 'Spill was the one place where you could escape the football... I think you would actually have to buy an igloo at the North Pole for that. There was a report on TV this lunchtime which had me falling off the sofa laughing. It was 'our man in Milan' taking the temperature among the locals. They wheeled on the Italian equivalent of the Muppets' Stadler and Waldorff (the two old guys) who sighed into the camera and said how tired they thought the Italian team were looking... And then they interviewed a young guy who said he really thought France deserved to win. I can't see the BBC getting away with that...can you? You"ve got to admire their patriotism... If I throw open the windows (which implies I'm willing to stand the siberian temperatures we're having over here (gel, Nilpferd?) then I'll hear the neighbours yelling. Think I'll join in and I'll probably just hear Ejay joining in from Sao Paolo. TV dinner on tray? Check. Chilled beer? Check. OK guys. We're ready. Here's a few fitba' related songs I found in the oracle...
Allez les bleus!!!!!

The rain spoilt things a bit for our neighbours- Real Madrid fan club- who were celebrating Spanish national day at the weekend.. I was a bit sad they didn't get around to doing their famed paella, the rain chased them all indoors before the party got started.
BTW, I'll be cheering the Romanian for "allez les rouges/jaunes/bleus" tonight..
Oh dear fp - 1:0 to Italy at half-time. (I've drawn Italy in the office sweepstake so I am a reluctant fan of the Azurri)
Bloody 'ell. We've lost Ribery, a red card, a penalty. what next? Locusts? Sores? Divine Fire? You've gotta believe.. Look what the Turks did. Meejah respect.
Doh!!
Oh fuckety fuck. Well. Let's look on the bright side. Toffee's one up in the office sweepstake. Who shall I support now? Ballach's a birrova dish so I could go for Germany. But I was well impressed by the Dutch. My man of the tournament goes to Frank Ribery who was magnificent. I hope his leg and foot are OK. Too tired to stay up for the après match post-mortem. Even if Ginola-shampoo-ad is holding forth. Nite all.
Frag, please don't tell me you're serious about Ballack? Really. BALLACK? If you want a dishy reason to support Fritz, at least go for the coach, Mr Loew (pronounced Luuurve, of course...). Nice.
But as far as I'm concerned, the Italians deserved it simply because they are coached by Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips. F'real.
Mark my words, though. The Dutch will bottle it. Spain all the way for me...
Evenin Snadfrod (I typed that with 2 fingers to be sure). Mr Loew is indeed rather easy on the eye (have just checked). But Ginola-shampoo-ad is still obscenely beautiful (he's commenting the match as I speak). I'm a sucker for long aquiline noses and that is one beautiful profile. Mind you, that Toni's a birrova dish too! Apologies to the blokes for the high intellectual level to which I have brought this post. If you were all doing the same with gurrls we'd all be howling in protest. So thank you for your indulgence. Nighty night. FP.
commiserations, FP. I actually bet a bottle of beer the french would recover after the penalty, but no luck.
Don't listen to Snadfrod, btw, Ballack is a complex eastern guy, whereas Löw is a boring Schwabe..
Anyway, I'm with my Spanish neighbours now.. at least until the final... and I've got a crate of 24 Augustiner each of which says the Dutch will bottle it..
Ah well, if we're talking about guuuurrrrlls now, I've got to say that the bird who plays up top for the Portuguese is FIT. What's her name? Nuno something or other... Oh yeah.
Nilpferd, apologies for my improper accenting of the German coach but still, honestly, Ballack? Complex? Oy. With you on the Spanish, though. Strength in depth all the way.
But, anyway, if at least one good thing has come from all this it is that we all finally realise thatFlorent Malouda is an absolutely rancid footballer. Eyethankyewgoodnight.
Nice playlist, fp. Only knew two of them. Do you not think Marco Van Basten is looking sickeningly attractive for a man my - sorry, his age?
At least France can now justifiably retire the pensioners from their squad now. Hopefully, Spain can force the Azzuri to consider the same surgery aftr the QF. Be a shame if Mr.Coyne (laughed out loud, snadfrod, nice one) has to go back to his day job though.
Mixed feelings chez-DD re Spain & Holland - wonderful, WONDERFUL football from both teams so far, but with my Red head on, I want 'Nando & the-hardest-working-non-goal-scoring-blonde-striker-turned-right-sided-midfielder-in-history both back fresh for the new season, particularly as we've lost Mascherano, Lucas AND Babel to the Olympics, and it looks like Xabi A is off to Juve ...
:o(
Lot of good that did. I didn't get to see the game, but knew it was over once we went down a goal. I am gutted that the Italians got through though. I thought our friends across the Alps and us would have a nice hubris moment together, but we couldn't count on the Romanians. Thanks Nilpferd, and those you represent! I never liked our coach anyway, so good riddance. I agree DD, I want our dreamy Fab to be well rested.
@DarceysDad: re "the-hardest-working-non-goal-scoring-blonde-striker-turned-right-sided-midfielder-in-history"
Who did score the first goal against the French?
Didn't see the games today, because of a three hour train journey home after a great meal & lots of drinks with a couple of ex-colleagues on the terrace of a nice beach club near Den Haag, a perfect evening....
Glad to see that Holland showed true sportsmanship by beating the Rumanians, sad to hear that Ribery went of injured, loved the way he kept going on against the Dutch...
Thanks Snadford - I KNEW he reminded me of someone.
If we're doing a football playlist, and a French-themed one at that, can I recommend Miossec's "Evoluer en 3eme Division". It's a bit beyond my A-level French, but I reckon the 3rd division "arriere droit assez brutal" in the song couldn't have done worse than Abidal.
If we're doing a French themed football songs list, then SURELY we have to have THIS:

(You've all seen it before, right?)
Cheers for those additional comments. Have comr to bed early as exhausted by the Russians hassling the shorts off the Swedes. aren't they playing well?! Young team full of self belief. Great to see...
Ha'way, pet, where's wor Gazza mordedrin' 'Fog on the Tyne'? And nae Waddle and Hoddle with 'Diamond lights'? Et notre bon amis Basile Boli and Chris Waddle. A comment from the site below (well worth a visit for those in search of a good laugh ) sums the last one up: "Why does Boli make more sense speaking French than Waddle does when he's speaking English?"
And I look forward to a Dutch victory because they've been playing beautiful football for years, and any team that can boast Kuyt, Van Nistelroy, Robben and Van Persie as their striker's pool deserves it.

@ Tempus: [Alan Partridge voice] "No.. No.. that's just noise. I'm losing you again..." Did you also find the 'not understanding Geordie Michael' jokes hilarious? WE understood him perfectly of course, did we not? STILL have not decided who to support. I was blown away by the feisty young Russians last night. I think the Dutch are absolutely inspired but have to snigger every time they say 'Kuyt' as it is pronouncved the samer way as the French 'coïte' which, as Ejay will tell you, means 'Coitus'. It's still an open race. Hals-und-Beinbruch to the Chermans tonight.
Cheers, FP, it helped.. although I'm pleased with the result my most memorable moment tonight was reading the GU football minute-by-minute where someone sent in a pun based on a shirt-switch resulting in Moutinho being dressed as Lahm...
That is funny..nilpf
I have to txt all my German friends congrats..a very good game indeed..one of them is in Istanbul..so if Turkey win tomorrow the party will be huge, they haven't slept much since the other nights game.
Good look to the Turks then! Istabul looks like a great place to party. Must get there some day.
