Thanks. The first one is just the original Sir Duke. It would be fun to do a quiz where you actually have to figure out the sample being used...good idea.
I'd never heard of jazzmatazz, but I just wikied it and it sounds very interesting.
ATCQ are sampling Rev. Jesse Jackson, speaking on Cannonball Adderley's album Country Preacher, as a lead in to the track Walk Tall. An awesome track. The vocal version of this, "Baby that's what I need", by Esther Morrow, got selected for Dorian's Songs of consolation theme. I've been bugged by another hip hop track which loops the chorus of Walk Tall- must have come out sometime in 95-96, by a group like ATCQ or possibly Pharcyde.
Nilpferd, I'm always up for a sample-tracking challenge. Was it Brand Nubian Concerto in X minor, by any chance? http://www.last.fm/music/Brand+Nubian/_/Concerto+In+X+Minor?autostart
Right sample and an awesome track, but it's not the one I'm thinking of. I'll add the sampled fragment of Walk Tall which I'm thinking about to my brass post above.
Nilpferd, you got me started...Pete Rock & CL Smooth (who I'm currently crushing on) sample Adderley, but not that track on Return of the Mecca. Now I want to learn more about Cannonball adderley!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGagnbtltl8
The Pete Rock is great, it uses Country Preacher. A good late recording by Adderley, playing a lot of his old hits with a new group, is Phenix- http://www.lastfm.de/music/Cannonball+Adderley/Phenixhttp://www.lastfm.de/music/Cannonball+Adderley/Phenix Confusingly I don't think all the tracks listed here are on the album, at least the one I have. Some are older. However they are all by the Adderley group.
The whole album is good--Mecca and the Soul Brother. And I REALLY like Walk Tall. I've just listened to it about a million times. But as my performance in the intro quizzes showed, there seems to be some disconnect between my ears and my brain. I'm stumped. I bet Ejaydee will know.
Sorry I couldn't help. I was away form my computer all day, but I'll add my support to Country Preacher, the album. I also know The Steam Drill was sampled but I couldn't tell by whom since I don't have the liner notes of the compilation whence my copy is from. Actually I could tell you thanks to Steenbeck's link, it was ATCQ (twice) and Black Moon.

The first one doesn't seem to work.
The second one is Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke".
Glad you posted that Steenbeck, reminded me of how much I like that ATCQ CD.
Do you like Jazzmatazz? I do, a lot.
