Ok, it was bad but not as bad as my top 5, which have remained fairly constant for years now: 1.We Built This City- Starship. 2. I Just Called to Say I Love You- Stevie Wonder 3. Uptown Girl- Billy Joel 4. Another Day in Paradise- Phil Collins 5. Walk of Life- Dire Straits.
The artists responsible are all capable of brilliant music but these are horrors. Irritatingly they still get played all over the place.
@ proudfoot - that's a fine list of monstrosities you've got there but I have to say that I'm with shoey on this one - Baccara take the biscuit for me everytime.
I also think that 'bad' music is very much about perspective and you touched on this when you said that the artists you listed are all 'capable of brilliant music'.
Imagine that you walked into a bar and heard an unknown group peforming 'Uptown Girl' and imagine that you'd never heard the song before - you might not like it much, but I doubt that you'd list it amongst your top 5 worst songs ever.
Having said that , I think that if I walked in and heard someone singing: "Yes Sir, I can boogie But I need a certain song. I can boogie, boogie woogie All night long." ...I would head for the exit door as quick as was humanly possible!
Yep, you're right. It's the squandering/ prostitution of talent factor. It's why I find James Blunt and Corinne Bailey Rae so irritating. It's ALMOST decent music but it's been hyped and produced and arranged in a way that sets my teeth on edge. My all-time least favourite album is Bowie's 'Tonight'. It has the brilliant 'Loving the Alien' but the rest is so awful. What did he think he was bringing to the Iggy/Beachboys songs? Did this guy really make 'Low' & 'Hunky Dory'?
BTW I think 'Sorry I'm a Lady' by Baccara is even worse but don't melt your brain cells listening to it to see if you agree. Please just take my word for it.
@Proudfoot Blender put out a list of 50 worst songs earlier this year. You will be pleased to hear that Starship was #1. Will post a link later.
@Toffeeboy It's more the performance than the song that get's me. I'm sure someone is provoking Mr. Numminen with boiling water &/or a pair of pliers as he prepares to sing the chorus.

Valid & witty justifications for the selections on the whole ("blows like Hootie" is now a favourite expression in shoeland).
