More Luck

Not sure if I'll get pilloried for this one.

But I like them, well I like their early stuff.

I couldn't find any film of the band in their heyday, unfortunately.

I saw them at the Oval cricket ground in 1972, on a bill that also included Focus, Genesis and Wishbone Ash.

@ Carole - I would love to have been at that gig. Not for ELP or Wishbone Ash - but Genesis and Focus in 1972! My idea of heaven...

I saw them at about the same time at the Long Beach Sports Arena, California. I have a vivid memory of it.
The arena is oval, the band was at one end and because of the amplified volume I was on the top row of the balcony at the other end: I think I was at exactly the audio focal point. The volume and frequency of the bass was such that I felt it was affecting my stomach muscles physically, unpleasantly, I moved.
Apart from that it was a great show.

A few years later I was friendly with a bloke called Armando Gallo, he was the ultimate Genesis groupie, he knew EVERYTHING there was to know about them, went to every gig wherever it was, turned up at every recording session photographed them incessantly, they adopted him. He self-published a book titled "Genesis - I know what I like". It got rave reviews, he gave me a copy which I was looking at recently,
happy days!

The name doesn't help - sounds like a firm of Lawyers. Will admit to liking "Fanfare" though.

Was that when you could get half an ounce of golden virginia, cod 'n chips, 2 bottles of milk stout, 50 fruit salads, a copy of the Evening Star, a pair of new shoes , some wicked flairs and the latest long playing sensation for 15 shillings and still have change from a grommet to spend on t'gee-gees?
After recently watching the BBC4 "Prog Rock" series, boy am i glad i was too young to suffer that stuff! My only crime was to get an ELP LP from Donny Record Lbrary due to "Fanfare" being in the charts...dreadful, but i'm sure you enjoyed it!
Chacun a son gout, as they say...

Carole - Focus were superb, I saw them c. 1973/4 and have never forgotten it - I even started flute lessons!

@ gremlinfc - you really had to be there!

(Very quiet voice) I used to rather like ELP in my younger day...
Carole, there's a DVD of ELP Live in Concert, including both Montreal 77 and the Isle of Wight Festival, brought out by a company called FNM. If you ever come across a copy of it, LEAVE IT WHERE IT IS, the IoW footage is of such poor quality, you can't really call it quality (if you see what I mean)

Thanks for that piece of advice, Debby.

There are a lot of dodgy bootleg quality DVDs around. I have a shocker myself, Led Zeppelin at Earl's Court in 1975 - produced by someone called Intergroove DVD.

Avoid it.

Going back to that ELP gig, I went there with my friend, her boyfriend and her brother (who I sort of fancied a bit). We started off somewhere in the middle of the field but by the time ELP came on stage we had got right down to the front.

I was standing by some crash barriers at the front and the other side was an area for photographers, other artists, hangers on etc and I was about 10 feet away from Peter Gabriel, still in his stage makeup and clothes, and his then wife.

It was a lovely warm evening and by then we were a bit drunk on cheap wine but I remember it vividly.

Hey, Carole - that Led Zep at Earl's Court DVD... is it the one that's so very *unpixelled* that Robert Plant looks like Michael Jackson with an orange wig on?

That's the one Debby.

I only bought the DVD because I was at the gig, waste of money.

You're better off buying the revised "The song Remains The Same" DVD.

The remastered soundtrack CD is pretty good too.
