Turtle Twist

This image is "Turtle Swimming Down" by Bill Traylor. I love BIll Traylor's art. I was going to do a whole post on it, but it seems to fit here. I'll post some more images later, but he's worth a google.

And here are few songs, not all I recommended this week, I'm abashed to say, and if anyone has a curiosity to hear anything else I mentioned, let me know and I'll post it.

Crawlin Kingsnake--John Lee Hooker
Turtle Twist
Remember the Mountain Bed
Let me Die in My Footsteps
Wildwood Flower
Done By the Forces of Nature
Sounds of the Safari
I'll be Yr Bird
Bro Weevil and the Swallow
Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me
Feeling Good
Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter
Ol Man River
Ol Man RIver
Flying Birds

The Jungle Brothers tracks are great.. is the bass on Forces of Nature live or sampled?
Safari Sounds makes a nice contrast to Coldcut's Natural Rhythms.
Also liked the Mandrill.
I think I have that Nina Simone track, on the Verve Remixed album, remixed by Joe Claussell... listen here- possibly a bit too laid back for the track, but nice..

I just twigged that you're all using dropbox, may try this next week..

Thanks for listening, Nilpferd. I'm not sure about the bass on forces of nature, I'll see if I can find out.

And I added RZA's flying birds, because I forgot to put it on last night.

That's Ghost Dog, right? very nice.. btw, there's a scene in Ghost Dog with some reggae in the background while GD is driving or walking somewhere during the day, do you know what it is?

I like it too, and I didn't know what it was. Thanks. I have a nearly 9 minute dub version by the Clash, I'll post it if you'd like to hear it. Called Justice Tonight/Kick it Over. It's Muy Bueno.

had a day of traveling all over Tokyo by train yesterday, so had a good chance to catch up on Spill tunes on the old iPod.
- loved the first 3 tracks especially - that Billy Bragg and Wilco thing was amazing - is it anything to do with the Woodie Guthrie stuff?

Thanks for listening, Japanther. Yes it's from Mermaid Avenue, the double album of Woody Guthrie lyrics they set to music. There are some good ones on there. I'd always thought of him as travelling/protest songs, plus a few children's songs, but there are some funny, sweet and even surreal ones. There's a sweet song about Ingrid Bergman that's loaded with sexual innuendo. Who knew?
Here it is...

Great stuff! - I liked the story in Dylan's autobiography of how Woody offered him the songs all those years ago (late 50's/early 60's before Dylan was famous) and he went to the house to get them but no-one was home.
I'm kinda glad they weren't found/used until all this time later, but can't help thinking how Dylan's entire career (and thus the cultural landscape of the 60's) would have been different if he had got access to them then.
