4 Little Birds

This was my birthday present from Malcolm--it's a picture of 4 little birds, a sequel to the Bob Marley song.

For all of us getting on in scores of years, here are Satchel Paige's Rules for Staying Young...

1. "Avoid fried meats which angry up the blood."
2. "If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts."
3. "Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gently as you move."
4. "Go very light on the vices, such as carrying on in society — the social ramble ain't restful."
5. "Avoid running at all times."
6. "And don't look back — something might be gaining on you."

He forgot 7. "drink loads of red wine."

Happy Birthday Claire! It's a pleasure to see your name on RR/'Spill.

Thanks, Ejaydee. Right back at you.

I added a song from Pete Rock's Petestrumentals album that has nothing to do with Birthdays, but is called cake. So...

Thanks steenbeck, there was a whole album I didn't have.

Thanks, Nilpferd, I'm very proud of his picture. I like the judicious use of red. You haven't hit 39 yet, have you?

Glad you could find it, Ejaydee, I realized later that the non-link I posted was probably useless, Duh. Cymande has suited my mood lately. And now I'm obsessing on Pete Rock. His album Petestrumentals feels good on my ears. And his solo albums feature many members of Wu Tang, among others. Have you heard them? I can only find one, but still looking.

I had his Soul Survivor album, and the Petestrumentals are with my brother. I'm sure he's produced a lot of songs I love, especially in the early to mid 90's, I love his sound, sort of like a more mellow DJ Premier.

I think what happened is that I started to notice how many things I loved that he'd produced--everything seemed to be leading back to Pete Rock. I love when things connect like that. Public Enemy remixes we've had forever, new Talib Kweli tracks, parts of illmatic, T.R.O.Y., Lots of Lovin-- all Pete Rock. I might track down DJ Premier next.

Oh, and I finally got Cee Lo Green is a Soul Machine. It's excellent, and a few of the tracks just kill me. Can't find perfect imperfections, or whatever it's called, but I'm not done looking.

Sorry to go on about P. Rock. I'm like a little kid, when I like something I just want to talk about it. Mr. Steenbeck has been away from home 12 hour days lately and he comes home and I'm all "let's talk about Pete Rock!!" poor fellow. Anyway, I think Nilpferd might like Petestrumentals. Perhaps I'll post some.

You should check out DJ Premier. My theory is that he is the sound of hip-hop. Of course that's subjective because he's more accurately the sound of hip-hop I started liking, it's the sound of I imagined of New York before I ever set foot there.
