The witching hour
Recently saw The Prestige, half magic, half occult, which we thought was very good. I never realised Bowie played Tesla until I posted this clip here, though. Most people's tracks this week are quite dark, mine are no exception..
General Science/Ish/Papa la bas, Conjure.
Science meets seance. Kip Hanrahan's latin jazz with a badly behaved ghost..perhaps more suitable for the magic theme, so I've warmed it up again.
The Witch, by 25 cents. Nice, thrashy lo-fi track by one of NZ label Flying Nun's first woman-only bands, very obscure but worth a listen.

Possessed trumpet married to hard edged funk- just to complete the set of Miles Davis tracks, Sivad, by the Miles Davis group edits three fragments together- the ending of a live version of Directions, followed by a studio fragment of Honky Tonk, and then a live Honky Tonk.

Didn't quite understand the above post but it spookily fits the vibe of the topic. Utter masterpiece. How many songs use the word 'schism'? The Maxinquay album blew me away. Just on the Bristol note, Portishead's new album 'Third' is on deezer in it's entirety. Listen to 'Dummy' - also there, and then listen to 'Third'. That's one whole hour of heaven!

Have to admit I haven't really been able to get into Third from what I've heard so far, maybe I'll try a deezer session...
I really liked the 2 nu jazz. Malcom liked the Flying Nun.
All this talk of Bitches Brew got me listening to it again, damn Spanish Key is a brilliant piece.

EJ, with Bitches Brew we proved what sad old fuckers we are..
1) gave away the old double cd when we bought the boxed set
2) repurchased a new double album after getting annoyed at the track distribution on the boxed set.
The saddest thing I did with these box sets, is, after feeling the urge to complete this beautiful collection, and owning already Sketches Of Spain, Porgy & Bess, Miles Ahead and Quiet Nights, I still bought the Miles and Gil set, cause those 6 seconds false starts are that indispensable.
What's that riff sampled in Voodoo Science? Is it Herbie Hancock?
Good question. I don't know- definitely sounds like a blue note septet recording. The vibes were recorded separately on top.

Funny you mention Spanish Key; when you used Sketches of Spain for your quiz I listened to it again and was struck how much of Spanish Key is derived from the playing of Concerto de Aranjuez. On that note, I'm off to see how the Spanish get on tonight...
