Eli "Paperboy" Reed

The best show I've seen this year is now available through fabchannel, enjoy Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves, pure soul in the best Sam Cooke/Otis Redding tradition, live from the small hall @ the Paradiso, Amsterdam:

Lordy! Not my cup of tea on the turntable usually but this is awesome live.

I bought his new record there and then from the Paperboy himself, got it signed by all of the band, and got offered a couple of beers by them, like I said, it was one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever attended, and well, the record is quite enjoyable as well!

How does the record measure up? I've bought so many albums at gigs by bands, only to find they weren't as good as the live deal (George Thorogood, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilko Johnson, Arts Ensemble of Chicago, Savuka...)
Siouxsie was one of my favourites as a young'un but I always thought they sucked live. Not everyone can do both as well INMHO.

The album is in fact excellent, been playing it a lot (on my iPod) on my daily train journey to and from work. The AllMusicGuide does go a little over the top in its 4-star review, I quote: "This sounds like a greatest hits set from the day, although every single song within is new, a classic album that every R&B/soul fan must have.", but, like I said, a very fine album by a guy with a great voice & and excellent band, and the free beers I've got from them give them some additional credit.. ;-)
