Dream of Life

We saw this movie the other night. I was expecting it to be more about her life in NYC in the 70s, but it was really about who she is now, and it might have been more interesting for that. It's very visually beautiful and poetic - appropriately dreamlike. And who knew she was so sweet?

Looks interesting Steen. I also prefer the kind of docu which avoids the obvious cliches, especially when the subject has a "glamorous" past.

What was anonymous on about?! I was really keen for some tips on cracking iPhones or where to buy new trainers, but this web 3.0 style pointless dreamy spam gets on my nerves, I have to say.

Hope this gets shown in the UK soon. I try to avoid hero worship, but find it hard where Patti's concerned!

Exodus - Michael Stipe is in it, too!.

Sourpus - I liked your post! I was going to think about it a bit and then respond.

Nilpferd - it's interesting about her glamorous past - it was almost a side note. Michael stipe and Flea and Thom Yorke were hanging around, obviously happy just to be near her, but it was more about her as a mother and a daughter and as a person who has experienced and learned to cope with a lot of loss. she was so endearingly human.

Love the Patti. Best R&RHOF performance ever (why do you have to be Sting or on a zimmer frame to get in is beyond me - R&R is 4 the yoof, not for people who can't chew their own food anymore. Correction: they can listen but should not be allowed to play, it's too sad to watch (ref. Jerry Lee Lewis).

Will look out for the docco.

Steen - Stipe's always been a big fan. When I saw REM at Glastonbury (about 10 or so years back) he kept urging the audience to go and see her the next night (she was playing on one of the smaller stages) and haranguing the organisers for not having her on the main stage.

That was the first time I saw her live, she'd just started touring and recording again. I've seen her about 5 times since. She is an extroardinary live performer. I've had great fun dragging people who don't know her, or have just vaguely heard of her, along to gigs & then seeing their jaws drop at the power of her performance.

The film has been and gone from UK cinemas, it was released around December 2008, if I remember rightly, but it's available on DVD on Amazon.

steenbeck, yes, sorry about that. I kind of chopped it without really meaning to and then had to leave for Vienna for a few days. Whenever Im on holiday I stay away from internet, or its not really a holiday.

It was just Patty's point about 'luck' - struck a chord. When you have a different point of view from almost everyone else, and you make art, I think you really find yourself making it for the best reasons. And what you have to say becomes what it should be - your own voice. Thanks for letting me know you liked it and sorry I dumped it out.
