Up Before The Beak

Last time I posted two quizzes in a row Blimps disappeared for weeks. Hope the events were not connected. If anyone finds quiz postings annoying just say so OK? I can take it. Maddy's theme had me thinking of a number of songs that detail the time twixt civvy life and actually being locked up in the slammer and so I didn't recommend.

Now then, now then, for 2 bonus points and a set of stripey pjams, can anyone name the songs?
No googling. 3 strikes and you're out. What say you good people?

1. "Yes I'm back again / I'm in trouble, so it's back to the pen / I found a car but I couldn't pay / I fell in love and I drove it away"

2. "What time is it?" said the judge to ___when they met/ "Five to ten," said ___ /The judge says, "That's exactly what you get." (Name deleted is the song's title)

3. "Into the courtroom my trial began / Where I was handled by twelve honest men /Just before the jury started walkin' out /I saw that little judge commence to look about"

4. " What am I supposed to do? / Sitting here in this eternal zoo / With no shoes on"

5. "But as the words are leaving his lips / A noise comes from behind"

6. "And at that the judge jerked forward / And his face it did freeze, /Sayin', "Could you kindly leave my office now, please? "

7. "The judge sits high and mighty and he asks me who I am / The robes he wears impress me but he looks a kindly man /To all who've come to see me, for those that'd prove me guilty / May the joker hear your call / And show you all more mercy "

8. " Now Stephen's in the dock for spending money that was earned"

9. " Sitting before you is a structure; massive and intense. It's here where your fate will be determined; before this Judge's bench...Then a voice booms:"This Court's now in session."And your adrenaline starts to rush. Peering down with eyes; that see through your soul..Is God the Father, your Judge ( Zoinks!)

10. " you tell me how can it work in this all white law? / what a short sharp lesson, what a third world war"

Cripes. The first one is maddeningly evading my touch, but not a clue on the rest.

#6 Is Percy's Song by Mr. Dylan now playing on a playlist not too far away. No clue on the rest.

Percy's Song, yep. Fairport version or Dylan?
D'sD: The chorus goes:
He didn't do it, he wasn't there
He didn't want it, he wouldn't dare

Number ten is The Beat (NOT the English Beat, please!!!) with Stand Down Margaret.

And number eight is Dusty Springfield with the Pet Shop Boys - can't remember the name of the track - hold on, I think I've got the CD single somewhere ... that's it - 'Nothing Has Been Proved'

All correct. Does ANYONE really call them The English Beat?

ToffeeBoy said...

Yes they do - it's those darn cousins of ours across the water. (sorry Steenbeck - you're excluded of course)

I suppose we are equally guilty of perpetrating this sort of crime - The Detroit Spinners anyone?

Am I being particularly thick here? Isn't no 2 'Joey' by the aforementioned Bobby Zee. I can't believe I am first with this. Did I not see all the comments? By the way Toffeeboy, how did the school fair go in the rain?

Good Morning, Judge by 10cc (number.1) - I just luuuuurve it when I actually know something on here!
(This is debbym btw: can't get logged in today)

I can't name no.7... for the very good reason that (afaik) it doesn't actually have a title. It's from the trial sequence of Fairport Convention's unbanded "Babbacombe Lee" meisterwerk.

Trivia: the line "could you kindly leave my office now, please" (from "Percy's Song") was actually uttered by the judge in some recent US TV drama I wuz watching - Boston Legal? Prompted a muffled guffaw; kudos, scriptwriter.

Splendid choice of lyrics, Proudfoot. I'd've got #s 5 + 10, too...

@ cb - the Summer Fair is this Saturday. And IT IS NOT GOING TO RAIN!

I'm sure I've heard a version of 'Percy's Song' where one of the victims of the car crash was the judge's daughter, hence the long sentence. Anyone know who it's by?

Thanks DebbyM for putting me out of my misery with No1; I'd mentally got as far as "fairly sure it's 10CC, but what...?".

Still absolutely not a clue at the rest. Had a logical thought process guess at two of them then googled for the replies, but I was wrong on both so won't ruin the quiz by naming them here.

@Toffeeboy. I am sitting gazing out a window in Watford at the moment and I will be surprised if there is any moisture left more than a foot above ground level by the weekend. (Well maybe 3 feet in some low lying places.)

Well done on the Babbacombe Lee trick question. You could call it 'Part vii' too. No.2 is indeed 'Joey', CB. Sorry about the two Dylan songs. Well done debbym for putting DsD out of his misery.
I'm glad no-one's got number nine. It's truly scary. Try this:

Satan bite the Dust!
There are quite a few versions of 3 but my favourite is on an album called 'Move it on Over'..
.
4. is a pretty obcure B-side. Just wondered if anyone else knew the song

@ cb - I had no idea we were near neighbours! Fingers crossed for a dry Saturday afternoon - I've given up on sunshine, I'll just be happy if it doesn't chuck it down.

My God, number nine is amazing. How did you find it? Judging from some of the comments on youtube, this guy is for real and not some Spinal Tap spoof.

@Toffeeboy - If it is any consolation, it rained on the school fair that I was doing the plant stall on a couple of weekends ago. It hit sales quite badly but the next school to have a plant fair got lots of stock we couldn't be bothered to take home. It's an ill wind...

Oh, dear. I do call them the English Beat. But I don't talk about them all that much, so it's okay. I like them a lot though. Then they have that whole specials, special beat thing. It's remotely like Parliament Funkadelic, taken together or separately or called p. Funk.
As I've confessed to many times, I'm hideously vague with facts, so even when I meet people I know very well I won't say, "well, hello, Joe" or whatever their name might be, because a part of me is convinced I've got it wrong.

Is it OK if we call Nirvana 'NirvanaUS' or something?
@Mnemonic. I was getting stuck for ideas and i googled "courtroom" and "Music" or something. God moves in mysterious ways. He controls google

OK, Jury's in. 3 is Cocaine Blues, made famous by a certain J.Cash.George Thorogood & the Destroyers did a twangtastic version too.
4 is the B-side of Turning Japanese by the Vapors. It's called 'Here Comes the Judge'.
